Are you worried about the Coronavirus?

NYT just reported that W .Barr and Ivanka met with someone, an Australian official, who has tested positive.
Just bizarre. Perhaps there are many more exposures everywhere that are not reported because it is between people in the general populations.
And it can be transmitted without symptoms.
So probably no way to really get a handle on actual numbers of infected people unless they are sick enough to report their illness and be tested.

I normally have local elderberry syrup on hand through the winter, but I gave my last bottle to my daughter when her kids were sick. So I ordered some elderberry capsules which I hope will be better than nothing. Right now I am just taking 1 capsule elderberry (1150mg) twice a day, 1000mg C twice a day, and one D3 5000 IU once a day. I have seen recommendations to take much higher than that, but that is what I am doing at the moment. I have seen conflicting advice about taking elderberry once you have CV. I am going to find out more about that from a local doctor who is intergrative. But I would increase the C and D3 if I got flu or CV.

I have been in this situation and did change to the family doctor for meds for my son. We weren't driving nearly as far, but it was still stressful. Far easier with the local doctor. I know we need to talk more off here, but how old is your son?

He’s 34 @diamondseeker2006...He’s like a young child..very innocent...but I use behavior mod every day or I would be toast..lol
I’ve decided to switch to my doctor. She treats my son and 94 year old mom too..who lives with me. I’m giving the psychiatrist until Tuesday..and then I’m emailing my doc to ask for help. I trust she wouldn’t leave me hanging..She may make me bring him in to the office..but we’ll cover ourselves in hand sanitizer...lol
How old is your son? You can contact me through LT..It would be great to chat. I can then give you my IG name so we can message...xxoo

Mother is currently in Prague as I received news and photographs last night. She is supposed to head to Austria today but the borders might be closed?

Schools are still open where I am but all class trips outside of the state has been postponed. Orchestra rehearsals are also postponed indefinitely. I think it is a good move to postpone such large gatherings of students and parents. Not worth the risk.

Unfortunately I’m expecting the numbers over the next two weeks to be more alarming than reassuring.

I still think we as a country will succeed in medical resource management to provide care. But I don’t expect things to be “back to normal” while numbers keep climbing which is likely to be the case for the next 2 weeks if data from other countries is to be believed. We are more similar to Iran and Italy in our size/approach than Japan/Singapore

Mamabean-

I was away from the thread for a few hours to sleep and I appear to have missed your entire story and a great deal of feedback you received.

First, I, also, have an adult special needs kid. Major hugs to you.

Second, although my daughter's doctors are all local I face the exact problem you do right now. When I want to see one of the two doctors I srill see in Virginia, it is a big deal. (We moved from Connecticut to Virginia in 2004. We still have a house there. My husband lives there, alone. He works in the District. I got very attached to two specialists i started to see while my daughter and I still lived there. Now she and I are back in Connecticut living inthe house I grew up in which was her grandparents' house.

When I need to see one of my Virginia doctors my brother comes down to stay with daughter. So doctors' appointments have to fit around my brother's very busy schedule. Every appointment takes three days: a day driving from Connecticut to Virginia; a day for the appointment; and a day driving from Virginia to Connecticut.

My neurologist visit is overdue and I am out of my headache medication. I do not want to go to Virginia. I have been staying in the house. None of the medicine I get from him is addictive, but I see him only once a year and his office charges even if one calls between appointments for a refill!

I have been postponing how I will handle this. I think eventually I may need to get a new neurologist, although this one has known me for years and it seems stupid since I only have to see him once a year!

My primary care doctor and GYN are local to me now. I just saw my nephrologist (kidney specialist) in Virginia last month. I asked him for a few days of headache medication when I saw him-something I had never done-but now I am glad I did. If I can't see my neurologist that may be all I have for a long time.

@MakingTheGrade I think I will try calling the office..She’s difficult to reach. Her office is in a medical building on a campus. Maybe I will contact my doctor.

@AGBF That’s the reason I continued to see her....We only saw her two times a year. I made it a special son and mom getaway so he would see it as a positive...We stayed over one night in a hotel..went out to dinner...etc..She is so hard to reach. If I needed her I‘m not sure I would be able to reach her...Fortunately I don’t need a lot of hand holding...but it would be nice to know she was there for us if we needed her..This has been coming for a long time...I need to move on..
I’m glad your brother is able to come to stay with your daughter when you have to go for visits. It’s hard when you have a good rapport and trust in a doctor and you have to move. I will be so upset when we have to move to Virginia in a few years because I will have to change my family doctor. My middle guy works in the District. =)2 He and his family live in Virginia..
There are quite a few people on here that have special needs children or adults. Hugs back to you...xxoo

Thanks to this thread I just woke up from a crazy dream about those Japanese toilets.

And they're serious y'all. makes me wonder if they start billing these folks for the cleaning if they continue to fly knowing they're sick.

JetBlue bans coronavirus-infected passenger who flew to West Palm Beach

STATEMENT FROM JETBLUE

The health and safety of our customers and crewmembers is our first priority. In reviewing last night’s event, we determined the customer boarded our flight knowing he was awaiting results for a coronavirus test without disclosing it to anyone at JetBlue. Consistent with CDC guidance, we ask all customers who are not feeling well, who believe they may have coronavirus, or who are awaiting test results to avoid travel until they are cleared by a medical professional. Last night’s event put our crewmembers, customers, and federal and local officials in an unsettling situation that could have easily been avoided, and as such, this customer will not be permitted to fly on JetBlue in the future.

If this helps inform your decision, covid 19 seems to be very mild in children (possibly asymptomatic). The biggest benefit from homeschool would be limiting the chances of him getting it and spreading it to others in the family.

Thank you. Our worry is having my son bring it home to my diabetic ex-smoker husband.

I read that ex-smokers will have trouble with this virus.
I did think of the drive-thru being an option even if they were to impose a quarantine situation like NY the pharmacy is right around the corner, I guess because he has multiple conditions that make him susceptible to illness it would be a little more comforting to have the medication here. Maybe that doesn't make sense. I have been able to keep my wits about everything else but when it comes to him I'm just worried. He was the only one of the four of us to get the flu last year and he was very sick. Maybe all the constant reports, emails, texts etc are getting to me. You make a good point though, it probably is not a concern because of the drive-thru and being in such close proximity to the pharmacy.

Stephanie, I have been preparing for my diabetic husband. We had his doctor write and extra supply of his meds and paid cash for them. We had them filled at walmart so they would be cheap but costco is another option. Also, they said to keep gatorade on hand to keep him hydrated during the fever. I bought regular, low sugar, and sugar free to give it to him according to his blood sugar readings. We had his doctor call in extra lancets and test strips as well so that we can watch him closely during the illness.

My county declared state of emergency and there is 1 case in my town. I decided to keep my son from preschool today, will see how this unfolds over the weekend and decide what to do next week.

Handful of hate crimes against Asians in were reported in Manhattan which is disturbing and makes me worry a bit for my family's safety.

All K-12 school cancelled statewide here through the first week of April. Now up to 12 diagnosed as of late last night, 3 in my immediate area.

I don't even have words. The national & local economic ripple this thing is causing now with all the cancellations (sporting, schools etc etc) is 10-20 fold.

I was one of the 1st in my social circle to react to this thing, by getting groceries, cleaning supplies etc. I initially felt awkward it, but we're prepared--as best as we can be--for this thing. Prayers to everyone for health.

In Australia our news was filled with reports Trump held a meet and greet with someone who has now tested positive. Our media has been playing clips of him stating he didn't shake hands and flat out refusing to be tested himself. Nothing like setting a good example for the rest of the population....

@Babyblue033 - I'm wondering if the staff member at the KFC was on the drive through window, I can only imagine how many people in our local community were exposed if that person was....

They have cancelled something called the Royal Easter show which is a famous in Australia Agricultural fair held in Sydney at Easter every year. Rides, showbags, farm animals, it's huge. This event has only been cancelled twice before in Australian history, once during the Spanish flu when it arrived here in 1919 and once during World War 2.

@Slick1 keep me updated on DD, fever is really a sign of any virus so no fever as I am SURE you know SLick is a good sign. My son Chris has jerry-rigged internet at his apt in Brooklyn so he's working from home now. Thank the whoever! subways are sickening sites w/o CV. Hope DD is fine and you take care as I should too.

Sounds like you're doing an awesome job preparing for you and your family!
Yeah, people who smoke, are ex smokers, or have underlying respiratory conditions are at higher risk of having complications with the virus.

Well, that was fast.

Hi Stephanie Lynn :) can you change your meds over to your insurance company's mail order? I did this yesterday because they send a 3month supply! not sure how long it will take but it's cheaper for me too. Your insurance company should have more foresight. We need some sort of policy from the CDC ordering insurance companies to pre fill needed scripts.

DH just came back from the pharmacy, our insurance BCBS will not cover any extra months of medication for his Janumet so he can have extra on hand. The medication outside of insurance is $570 a month.

Has anyone had this experience or is this unusual? I guess we will just have to fill it month by month.

ETA: he is also on blood pressure meds so our out of pocket would be higher than that $570. I am also on Metformin for my PCOS but can go without it if need be since I'm not diabetic.

@Mamabean if you are an Android user and not Apple, we use the app "Duo" to do face to face with our sons MB. I think @Calliecake has made a great suggestion, on the phone, face to face.. seems good enough for me, is she an MD also? she should be calling you and saying let's just 'facetime'!

It’s insane @Mamabean. I would call her office and tell them if she needs to see David that you will Facetime with her and she can see and talk to David thru FaceTime. I’m sorry you have to deal with this Mamabean. David‘s doctor should realize this is a stressful time for people.

David’s psychiatrist stepped up to the plate and told me she will send me electronic refills! I have to wait a month but OMG I’m so relieved! I was really sweating that out!

I had H1N1 in 1999-2000 season, I had been sick since early November with some sort of cough virus thingy, then I acquired norovirus, it was hell, weeks of getting better and then relapsing, then I got H1N1 mid December 99 I thought wow! I'm feeling better! no coughing, then I went a few days later and was grocery shopping and as God is my witness I'm pushing the cart and all of a sudden I got so hot I thought I was going to faint, sweating, and within hours coughing, went to the emergency clinic, tested for flu and had H1N1, that FAST, I spent the turning of the millenium being so sick I woke up once to see a ball going down in Vegas, missed NYC entirely, then my mom died 1/8/2000 it was hell.

I don't think I can catch h1n1 again but I never want it again either. very sick.

I caught H1N1 very early on before it was big news. It was the sickest I've been in my life. Went into my lungs, lowered BP so I couldn't get up without falling. It was so awful. This stuff scares the crap outta me.

Awesome! I had a feeling she would. Most physicians are good and caring.

@Tekate She just emailed me to say she will electronically refill one of his prescriptions in one month and when I need it! I’m so happy!

Yup, and I expect it to get faster for a little bit longer. Exponential curves suck.

We really need an unlike button or a gong or something...Okay I know I’m repeating myself..lol
