Are you worried about the Coronavirus?

The first trials for Coronavirus vaccine has started

Australian researchers have been using Malaria drugs and drugs for HIV they killed the virus in a test tube in, and mice - they have already used them here with success on humans. Now they want to do systematic measured doses collecting data to prove it works.

Dr. canceled my colonoscopy appointment for tomorrow.

132 cases in Louisiana now with 3 deaths— latest death is 84 year old from Lambeth house retirement complex

All hospitals in my area are cancelling elective procedures and non essential appointments. Waiting rooms are too convenient as petting dishes and no elective procedures and surgeries means more hospital capacity and personnel resources.

I was talking to a collegue in bay area. is it the entire bay area?

After the last new conference towns and cities here that haven't already did a state of emergency are now.

tomorrow I will be participating in a VPN Fitness test. oh boy....

@smitcompton yes they were told that by the president. they'll be able to be reimbursed for it too. How they get them at this time, be it they do what Italy did and have some folks come in with a 3d printer and make them, or, pay a medical device maker to make them will be up to them. The reserve of respirators is not adequate at the national level, never was for this type of event.

Is that printed part the only thing missing to be able to have additional respirators? If so, that should be made very public as many people have 3D printers and would be happy to print them as fast as they can manage. (I really don't know anything about respirators! Do they just hook oxygen to that printed part?)

Geez I knew it! DH‘s airline still has crews flying to all but the restricted countries. He got caught in the O’Hare customs debacle with thousands of others coming in from Europe and the Middle East Saturday evening before the new restrictions went into effect. It was a zoo and a petrie dish situation and he had to have been exposed. So, we’re self quarantining. Wish us luck!

UK has rammed up its efforts to contain the spread, affecting public events and the hospitality sector.

DK :((

Good luck!

I saw photos of some airport during that mess. That would be horrible in the best of situations.

Not a medical professional but yes, thats what it looks like to me. Apparently the manufacturer of the part at the hospital didnt want to share the schematics because of IP laws. There's a time where you just have to say screw that and do it for the greater good. So they came up with their own CADs based on the part they had at the hospital.

From what I saw in the comments they are planning to make the files public.

Multiple counties. It's not 100% confirmed yet but pretty certain. They were telling people to get prepared (from SFChron).

Mother's flight changed to arrive back in the USA later this week as countries are now closing their borders. Not sure what is going to happen next as I expect her to be quarantined somewhere. I'm not sure what is the US policy for those flying in from the Middle East, yet was in EU for a few days. We are currently citizens so there's no worry regarding not being allowed entry but I am a little worried about where she will be held and her care during quarantine.

Oh gosh @chrono I hope all goes well with her flight and after.

Good luck @Bonfire. Sending prayers your way. We have a good friend who flies international for Continental. He lives here in NW Ark but flies out of Newark. Haha, we thought we were totally secluded here but he and his family came for a visit last week. I didn't think too much of it last week but now o_O.

@smitcompton , I thought I had read that they have taken over a hotel and made it a makeshift hospital in London. I’m surprised we are not hearing of this happening in the US.

@Bonfire, Oh no, I’m so sorry. Sending prayers that you all are ok. O’Hare was a nightmare on Saturday.

Small world Gussie! DH was with Continental for 25 years before they merged with United in 2012. It’s all United now. Yeah, you might not want to continue to socialize with them! :oops2:

In Colorado, our governor has now ordered closure of all restaurant dine in service as well as casinos, bars, coffeehouses, movie theaters, and gyms for at least 30 days.

Being that we are a university time, and I am both attending and employed by a local college, it is mind boggling and so sad to watch so many friends, students, and others whom I care about be completely out of employment overnight.

Never did I think in my lifetime...

Bay area is implementing a shelter in place starting at midnight. People wont be allowed to leave their homes unless it is for essentials/hospital/etc.

This is what should be happening everywhere, as difficult as it is.

It’s hard not worry when we see a lot of chaos and panic around us.

Current confirmed Coronavirus 19 cases according to John Hopkins website is almost 157,000 people. Current world population is estimated to be 7,700,000,000. The percentage of the world population that have this virus is 0.002038961038961. I’d take those odds any day. I remain optimistic.

Hoping all of you and yours remain well and virus free.

Marcy

Good way to look at it Marcy, thanks.

Except that it looks like "essentials" includes drive through and take out so there is probably still a lot of spreading going on. Looks like they have the same things in place that WA does pretty much.

One of my children has a fever so our house is now in isolation for two weeks. The temp is very high but he thankfully doesn’t feel too bad in himself, and especially with children there’s always the possibility that it’s something else so I’m trying not to worry excessively. The timing has typically coincided with the U.K. government increasing the isolation period from 7 to 14 days and from individuals to households.

The problem with the UK is that our houses/kitchens/fridges etc are not the size in some other countries and a fortnight’s food for a family takes a lot of space! Although if Italians can cope in small, city centre flats we definitely should be able to. I have about a week’s worth of fresh meals and then we’ll have to hit the freezer and store cupboard options - the kids will be in seventh heaven on fish fingers, pasta/tuna and frittata with limited veg options. Hubby and I will be overdosing on chickpea stews (probably less tasty by the time the onions run out, and there were no peppers in the supermarket yesterday) and beetroot dahl (vacuum packed beetroot saves the day!) - I’ll be significantly happier than my husband with that. In fact, he may even vote for the kids’ option! Or maybe this will broaden the children’s palates a little if they know there’s no options.

The major casualty is likely to be our dog! I have no idea what the logistics of isolating are supposed to be for dog owners. We may have to go out to do some midnight walks, as he can’t go without a walk for 2 weeks. It’s got to be safer to go at night and steer clear of any other people than to have a walker come near the house to collect him? The roads near us are very quiet even in day time, so I think that would be safe but I just don’t know.

These are uncharted waters for everyone, I guess. I’ve caught my children giving me a couple of unsure looks when they’ve asked questions about how things will work and I’ve said that I have no idea, we’re all (governments included) having to make up the rules as we go along. I’ll have to work on fostering security and calm while we’re stuck in.

Talking of rule changes, our household screen time rules may be under severe attack for the next two weeks. Wish us luck...

I was just given a government document here that each person has to sign and carry when outside the house. No travel, except for the necessities of food, medicine or caring for a compromised family member and otherwise only to leave the house for brief solo exercise and dog walking. But only close to your place of residence.

@Jimmianne Hope you are ok. I think this will probably happen in the UK soon! Take care x
@lissyflo Wishing your family member a speedy recovery x. Loving the Nespresso supplies.

Thanks, Niffler. It makes me happy because It means everyone has to be careful, not just conscientious people. Although, I don’t know who is going to enforce it, I have never even seen a policeman in or near my village. And I doubt I have any neighbors who would want to get close enough to me to see the paper anyway. LOL

Take care XX

Me again - I think I might be on here quite a bit for the next fortnight!

I just wanted to say that I’m now really unsure on my personal view on testing suspected cases. Before today, I looked at the UK figures (I believe they’re 44,000 tested of which over 42,000 were negative) and thought of how the money on negative tests could have been better spent towards ventilators, food supply networks for the elderly, etc, especially given the fairly low percentage of positives. I thought that suspected cases should assume the worst and isolate on the assumption that it’s corona.

I would now dearly love to know whether we as a family are quarantined for two weeks for corona (in which case the severe impact on our life, physically and mentally, is absolutely worthwhile and is far outweighed by the positives) or whether we are unnecessarily quarantining for a completely different, common childhood illness. Only a test can tell us that. I didn’t think I’d get cabin fever but the thought of not even being able to go out to walk the dog in the sun (or even the rain!) is definitely having an impact. It’s only day 1 though so I guess the adjustment period is always the worst.

My concerns may be entirely theoretical also, as I think it’s likely that the whole country will be asked to isolate for a period soon anyway!

I wish we had rapid testing because I want to be able to go to work (I’m a physician) but now every time I cough or feel warm I’m worried I need to stay home. I get bad spring allergies and reassure myself that unless I have a dry cough and fever that it’s probably just my allergies since I have zero known exposures. But then I read about asymptomatic carriers with no fever and I think oh fudge.

I don't want to spread anything but I also don’t want to be calling out of work unnecessarily at a time like this! A rapid test would give me such peace of mind!

In the mean time I’m checking my temp every morning and being very conscientious to not touch anyone I don’t need to touch! And am washing my hands constantly. My biggest worries are related to spreading it rather than getting it.

I think they’re saying that they‘d like to keep tests for health care personnel @lissyflo because ATM they have no choice but to keep working, so it’s imperative for them to be healthy bearing in mind the amount of people they’re dealing with.

I think unless you have clear symptoms of Corona, then the self isolating is also to stop the spread of other illnesses that could impact people who are already health compromised.

This is probably the only time in my life that I can say that I’m glad my poor Dottie isn’t with us anymore, not from the exercise point of view, because we’d still take her out, but like you, at less busy dog walking times, but because I’d be worried about getting enough food for her. If people go just as crazy with buying up pet food as they’ve done with human food, we may have had a problem.
