Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

Ephemery – I wrote this to you earlier, but I don’t think you saw it:
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Ha, I was on the same roller coaster and in TOTAL shock that it worked the first time and had the “oh no, what did we do!” reaction! Wishing you a H&H 9 months. My mom just took a trip to the Dominican and didn’t get a malaria shot. My dads gone numerous times as well and to my knowledge has never gotten one.
I just called my mom to confirm and neither of them have ever taking any kind of medicine. They have been to Punta Cana and Casa de Campo, perhaps you are going somewhere different. All trips were booked through travel agents and no one ever mentioned needing anything for malaria. Two of the men my dad has traveled with every time are doctors too.

Tacori – Yeah, $20 is expensive for 2 socks! Now I am going to be even more paranoid about loosing them! Lord… if I had a dollar for every time Jon knocked the shield off and then started screaming because I had to set him down to find it and wash it.

MSB – You aren’t the first to mention teeth. I havent looked real close, but I think I will try tonight. I think his room stays at a fairly consistent temp, but I will try to take more note of it. I’m really starting to think its not being around me so much. I know that sounds crazy, but I was reading something about it called “daytime mellowing”. Daycare says the only time he cries is when he is hungry and I have watched them and they do hold/hug them.

Daytime mellowing: A peaceful daytime is likely to lead to a restful night. The more attached you are to your baby during the day and the more baby is held and calmed during the day, the more likely this peacefulness is to carry through into the night. If your baby has a restless night, take inventory of unsettling circumstances that may occur during the day: Are you too busy? Are the daycare and the daycare provider the right match for your baby? Does your baby spend a lot of time being held and in-arms by a nurturant caregiver, or is he more of a "crib baby" during the day? We have noticed babies who are carried in baby slings for several hours a day settle better at night. Babywearing mellows the infant during the day, behavior that carries over into restfulness at night.

Jas – If I could wear those socks to work, I would! I don’t think you will be showing too much by then… high/empire waists are good and so are the shirts with rouching at the top. I bought a lot of non-maternity tops that I was actually able to wear the whole time because the high waist stuff was in style and seems to still be. All the cute stuff out there now reminds me of my preggo clothes! Tacori is right though, long is the key! I''m 6 feet tall and If I could get stuff long enough to last 9 month, I''m sure you can too.

Tgal – If you are interested in swaddling, definitely get a Miracle Blanket. I started swaddling Jon at about 2 weeks and I went from getting up every hour to every 2-4 hours… it was HEAVEN. He fussed a bit at first, but I would just rock him a little and then lay him down. I always have to fight him a little to get him in, but once I get those arms pinned down, he is calm and often asleep within seconds. SIL gave me one of the Kiddapotomus ones (I think that the brand) and it was a joke… he broke out of it in a heartbeat!

Wow, this thread is busy today.

ephemery--
congrats and wishing you a healthy and uneventful 9 months!
yup, i had this insatiable hunger at the very beginning of the pregnancy too.

jas--
don''t fret about the weight gain.
your body just behaves differently when you are preggo.
somehow i think it stores fat much more easily-- building up the maternal fat for BF i guess.
regarding finding something to wear: like tgal said, anything unrestricting should suffice.
being that this is your first pregnancy, you probably won''t show that much at 15 wks.

jas12--
glad you clicked with your ob. hmm....."naughty boy"? hope that is not a slip on the ob''s part.
yay for the head down position.
love your "annoucement" to the parents by the way. it''s too cute.
about the movement. i feel my little one move constantly. i don''t get the vibrating movement that you mention though.
i do feel as if she''s using my uterus as a punching bag, you know when a boxer practices his quick jabs.
i don''t know what type of calistenic she''s doing, but it sometimes feels like a mini explosion.

tgal--
i exhale too when doing the kegels. i haven''t been doing it religiously though, but i guess it''s not too late to start.
anyway, regarding sleeping on your back. my lamaze coach said that for the die-hard back sleeper, propping a pillow on the right side of your back when you lie down is good enough. that way your uterus is a bit tilted to the left and not pressing on your vein. that''s how i''ve been sleeping. like you, i find it hard to sleep on the side especially when i just eat or drink something. i can feel food coming out of me if i lie on my left side -- weird. guess there really is no room for my stomach.

Jas - I''ll be 15 weeks tomorrow and most people can''t tell that I''m preggo yet - - unless they knew what I looked like before. I''ve put on about 10 pounds but sort of all over and not just in the belly. I can still wear my regular shirts but I''ve grown out of most of my pants - but still too small for maternity wear at this point. This is my first pregnancy too. I can''t wait to start showing so I don''t feel so fat all the time. I know what you mean about the body issues and it is especially hard putting on so much weight so fast.

CONGRATULATIONS to the new preggos!! Yet another baby boom on pricescope! I wish you a happy and healthy 9 months.

So far so good today for me. My m/s is finally starting to let up enough for me to feel "normal" and be able to eat without feeling green afterwards. I upped my fiber and started drinking more water so I haven''t had much more potty troubles. I talked with my boss about my maternity leave yesterday and basically I can take as much time as I feel necessary at 80% pay. I will probably take about 8 weeks after the birth at least. I don''t know about before the birth though. I always planned on working right up till the end but I guess we''ll wait and see how I''m feeling. We''re going to hire a part-time temp to cover while I''m gone, which is what I figured the boss would want to do. I''m lucky to work for such a great guy! He has three kids of his own so he knows what it''s like.

Jess

Just doing a quick driveby to post something funny that a friend just sent me. I''ll be back later with lots of comments--we are dealing with the life insurance thing now and you really need a professional to talk you through all the choices...

Here''s a laugh for today:

HOW TO PREPARE FOR BECOMING A PARENT

Lesson 1

Go to the grocery store.

Arrange to have your salary paid directly to their head office.

Go home.

Pick up the paper.

Read it for the last time.

Lesson 2

Before you finally go ahead and have children, find a couple who
already are parents and berate them about their:

Methods of discipline.

Lack of patience.

Appallingly low tolerance levels.

Allowing their children to run wild.

Suggest ways in which they might improve their child''s breastfeeding,
sleep habits, toilet training, table manners, and overall behavior.

Enjoy it, because it will be the last time in your life you will have
all the answers.

Lesson 3

To discover how the nights will feel...

Walk around the living room from 5PM to 10PM carrying a wet bag
weighing approximately 8-12 pounds, with a radio turned to static (or
some other obnoxious sound) playing loudly.

At 10PM, put the bag down, set the alarm for midnight, and go to sleep.

Get up at 12 and walk around the living room again, with the bag,
until 1AM.

Set the alarm for 3AM.

As you can''t get back to sleep, get up at 2AM and make a drink.

Go to bed at 2:45AM.

Get up at 3AM when the alarm goes off.

Sing songs in the dark until 4AM.

Get up. Make breakfast. Keep this up for 5 years.

Look cheerful.

Lesson 4

Can you stand the mess children make? To find out...

Smear peanut butter onto the sofa and jam onto the curtains.

Hide a piece of raw chicken behind the stereo and leave it there all
summer.

Stick your fingers in the flower bed.

Then rub them on the clean walls.

Cover the stains with crayons. How does that look?

Lesson 5

Dressing small children is not as easy as it seems.

Buy an octopus and a small bag made out of loose mesh.

Attempt to put the octopus into the bag so that none of the arms hang
out.

Time allowed for this - all morning.

Lesson 6

Take an egg carton. Using a pair of scissors and a jar of paint, turn
it into an alligator.

Now take the tube from a roll of toilet paper. Using only Scotch tape
and a piece of aluminum foil, turn it into an attractive Christmas
candle.

Last, take a milk carton, a ping-pong ball, and an empty packet of
Cocoa Puffs.

Make an exact replica of the Eiffel Tower.

Lesson 7

Forget the BMW and buy a mini-van. And don''t think that you can leave
it out in the driveway spotless and shining. Family cars don''t look
like that.

Buy a chocolate ice cream cone and put it in the glove compartment.
Leave it there.

Get a dime. Stick it in the CD player.

Take a family size package of chocolate cookies. Mash them into the
back seat.

Run a garden rake along both sides of the car.

There. Perfect.

Lesson 8

Get ready to go out.

Wait outside the bathroom for half an hour.

Go out the front door.

Come in again. Go out.

Come back in.

Go out again.

Walk down the front path.

Walk back up it.

Walk down it again.

Walk very slowly down the road for five minutes.

Stop, inspect minutely, and ask at least 6 questions about every
cigarette butt, piece of used chewing gum, dirty tissue, and dead
insect along the way.

Retrace your steps.

Scream that you have had as much as you can stand until the neighbors
come out and stare at you.

Give up and go back into the house.

You are now just about ready to try taking a small child for a walk.

Lesson 9

Repeat everything at least (if not more than) five times.

Lesson 10

Go to the local grocery store. Take with you the closest thing you can
find to a pre-school child. (A full- grown goat is excellent).

If you intend to have more than one child, take more than one goat.

Buy your week''s groceries without letting the goats out of your sight.
Pay for everything the goat eats or destroys.

Until you can easily accomplish this, do not even contemplate having
children.

Lesson 11

Hollow out a melon.

Make a small hole in the side.

Suspend it from the ceiling and swing it from side to side.

Now get a bowl of soggy Cheerios and attempt to spoon them into the
swaying melon by pretending to be an airplane.

Continue until half the Cheerios are gone.

Tip half into your lap. The other half, just throw up in the air.

You are now ready to feed a nine- month old baby.

Lesson 12

Learn the names of every character from Sesame Street, Barney, Disney,
the Teletubbies, and Pokemon. Watch nothing else on T V for at least
five years.

Lesson 13

Move to the tropics. Find or make a compost pile. Dig down about
halfway and stick your nose in it. Do this 3-5 times a day for at
least two years.

Lesson 14

Make a recording of Fran Drescher saying "mommy" repeatedly. (Important:
no more than a four second delay between each "mommy"; occasional
crescendo to the level of a supersonic jet is required). Play this
tape in your car everywhere you go for the next four years.

You are now ready to take a long trip with a toddler.

Lesson 15

Start talking to an adult of your choice. Have someone else
continually tug on your skirt hem, shirt- sleeve, or elbow while playing the "mommy"
tape made from Lesson 14 above. You are now ready to have a
conversation with
an adult while there is a child in the room.

Well that''s it Curlygirl. I''ve superglued my hoo-hah together.

Hilarious, curly! No kids for me yet ... and for some of those reasons! But I had to comment on the above part in Lesson 8 -- so true!
When watching my friend''s then 4-year-old one day, a walk which would normally have taken 15 minutes turned into a 45-minute exploration of everything! I''ve never been asked "why?" so often in my life! But, gotta admit, the kid is smart and adorable!

Congratulations, ephemery!

So many PS new pregnancies and soon-to-be-born babies (which I cannot wait to see) -- they seem to be happening in waves!

Yup, empire and babydoll shirts are essential.
You can probably wear those into your third trimester too.

baby movement: i never did the kick counts with my first two, but I do admit to being very aware this time of when he''s moving and it''s always comforting to feel it even when he wakes me up in the middle of the night doing his party dance.

I know. I actually find myself not dreading getting up at night too much because of the kicks.
I have a tendency to drink some water whenever I get up to use the restroom. Of course, the more I drink, the more I have to get up.
Anyway, every time I drink, the little one will be doing her little dance.

TGal, we went with an agent. He came over and explained everything to us. I did look at prices online to compare and for some reason I think it is pretty cheap (DH says not really b/c hopefully we will never cash in the policy). We went with a 30 term. DH''s is twice the amount as mine since he make most of the money and has a lot of real estate in his name. It IS depressing to think about but I know it is the right thing. We are both self-employed so we would have no death benefits without it.

Njc, I actually do not like the "ready-made" swaddle blankets. We use the waffle weave ones and you can get those suckers TIGHT. Tessa sleeps better swaddled too but sometimes she does manage to get a hand out. We have swaddled her since birth. I am trying to stop b/c I read that you aren''t suppose to fully swaddle after 60 days (with the arms).

Ella, thought of you last night but PS was on maintenance so I couldn't post. Babycenter has the BOB Duallie for 30% off, so it's about $370...a good deal I think?

ETA, Tacori, thanks. I will start to ask around...you're right...it's the smart thing to do.

TGal, for $500,000 it is only $30 something a month! So it is worth it. Whole is more expensive and you get your payments back (I think) but when we looked into it you could make more money putting the difference in a high yield savings account so it didn''t make sense to us. There was a third kind but I forgot what it was called.

Bought myself a hooter hider tonight!

Tacori--
That''s not too bad. I thought that it would be more.
Definitely worth getting it for a peace of mind.

Congrats Ephemery!!!

Wow, this thread is BOOMING!! Whooo hooo!!!

TGal, I definitely recommend splurging for the Miracle Blanket. I am a horrible horrible swaddler and can't do it for the life of me with a real blanket (I don't DUDU well!
9.gif
), and I don't like the Swaddle Mes or the Sleepsacks that have the wings on them. The MB is a godsend far as I'm concerned.

And a big ooooooooh on the BOB sale! Must check that out! I am kinda lovin' my Snap-n-Go right now too
30.gif

I have a Bebe au Lait cover, but to be honest I find it kinda awkward (though tres cute!). But then again I really havent used it all that much to get comfy with it.

Eph: soooo cute that you FIL cried--that''s great! Let us know how the other announcements go.
I was also thinking--i didn''t get a shot when i went to Dominican--and neither have any of my friend who go every year. Is it something new?

Lili--i don''t think the OB slipped with the gender b/c he had just asked me if I knew what I was having moments before--i think he was just being silly (i hope!). But so far every technichian has made the ''boy prediction'' based on fetal movement--so stereotypical eh? They should have met my sister when she was an infant --she was wild!

Curly-that list is great! Thanks for posting it!

Jackiejas--more weight gain sympathy--i posted a lot about this early in my pregnancy b/c like you i felt down about it at the sign of the first few pounds. Since i got preggo right after my wedding i went from feeling fit and great to bloated and chubby in a just a month. Know that the first tri and some of the second are usually the worst for body image--you don''t look pregnant but weight starts to creep on and clothes don''t fit. I actually feel better about myself now, at 32 weeks and nearly 30 lbs weight gain, then i did back in Tri. 1.
As for fashion, I wore my first pair of mat. pants at week 16, but i still haven''t worn a maternity shirt (i just buy large or x-large b/c as other''s have mentioned, the styles right now are great for preggos) If you buy a dress that is forgiving it should fit--that''s much easier to stretch over a belly than pants which you''ll need to buy every month or so if you are like me!

I just wanted to pop in to say congratulations to you, Ephemery! Yay!
36.gif

I love reading this thread -- I feel like I should take notes so that when we''re ready to start trying, I''ll know more about what to expect. That time won''t come until next year probably but it''s fun to see how everyone''s doing.

Aren't they great? Obviously I don't know what the twin version is like but the single is wonderfully easy and light. Oh no, I just bought the Bebe (I think?) I guess I need to try it out...I hope I like it.

ETA: Lili, you would think it would be more huh? I think he said the million was around $80 a month. I can't really remember the exact numbers I just remember thinking it was really reasonable.

congratlations, EPhemery, that is great news!

Baby sunblock question:

(I am full of questions aren''t I???)

When should you use? (every time we go on a walk?) What brand do you like? What other precautions should I take when she is in the sun?

Baby sunblock question:

(I am full of questions aren''t I???)

When should you use? (every time we go on a walk?) What brand do you like? What other precautions should I take when she is in the sun?

tacori, i normally tried to have my girls wear a little hat or something if we were taking a walk or used the visor thing on my stoller so they never really got direct sunlight on them. i didn''t do any sunblock in the winter. In the spring/summer though, i use the waterbabies, coppertone makes it I think?? they also make a face stick which I LOVE. no accidental drippings in the eyes etc. the spray on version is nice too, but it''s like $8 and you''ll run out of it really fast. We''ll at least I do, lotioning up 2 kids.

With all my litigating yesterday, I couldn''t keep up with you gals on this thread! Wowsa!

Congrats, Ephemery!
36.gif
I hope you have a great pregnancy.

On the sunblock question, my guy is very fair (blond hair, blue eyes: my Phillipino nanny says "he''s so white!!!"), but I generally just put a hat on him if we are out for about an hour. Any substantial play time or lots of skin exposure (ie. swimming), then I use the kids sunblock in the spray.

Maternity clothes. Oh god how I do not miss those things. I also wore regular shirts for most of my pregnancy (I only gained about 25 pounds, so not bad). The best buy was a pair of Seven jeans - they are regular Sevens, and they take off the waist band and put on a maternity band. They were so awesome and comfortable and you looked nice! Also, you get the waist band, and you can put that back on after you have the baby. However, I lost way too much weight (another story), so I had to give my "maternity" Sevens to my sister.
15.gif
.

Here is a question - baby food. I made my own, and now I never give my guy those "toddler meals", but make my own food for him (if he isn''t eating our supper), but everyone that I tell this to thinks I am some sort of weirdo. What do you do?

Litchick--Of course i don''t have the babe yet, but I plan to make most of the food as well (unless travelling or something like that) I already make the majority of my food from scratch--like soups, bread, sauces, dressings etc. b/c I luv to cook and like to know what goes into my body-- so i am going to go with the idea that i can just make a little extra and freeze it in ice-cube trays. Is that what you do? Do you know of any good baby-food recipe books, I was thinking of getting one?

I didn''t know you could do that with the Seven''s jeans--is that something the company offers or just something you did thru a tailor? I''ll have to keep that in mind for another pregnancy. I''ve decided that i am just going to stuff myself into what i already own for the next 7 weeks!

Yah, I just steamed veg/fruit and mashed it up and froze it in ice cubes (I had little heart ones at Ikea which were about 1 tbsp, and later, a used muffin tins - but the plasticy ones, which are about 1/2 cup). My little guys favorite was avocado, which you do not even have to cook, just mash it up with banana or ricotta cheese, freeze, and done! So I may not be a freak after all!

The Sevens were from a maternity shop in my city, but I expect you could just go to a tailor and get it done too.

Congratulations, Ephemery!!!

LitigatorChick, if you don''t mind me asking, how do you find balancing the demands of being an attorney with motherhood? Do you work very long hours typically? Do you know of attorneys who have worked out part time or 40 hour/wk arrangements with firms to allow for better work-life balance? Thanks in advance.

Curlygirl, thanks for the advice, some six months too late! LOL!

Litigatorchick. I don''t know of anyone who bought baby / toddler food. Everyone I know with kids just made their own. I have seen special foods on sale, but I don''t like the look of it to be honest. I don''t eat prepacked / processed food, so I''m going to try to avoid giving it to my child. Mind you, my child isn''t born yet, so we''ll see...

Thanks, Mrs.Mitchell. The people I talk to usually say, oh I wish I had so much time that I could sit around making baby food (yes, that''s me, nothing but time - just litigating 50 plus hours a week and raising a toddler) and why don''t you just buy the can stuff (because I don''t eat our of a can/jar, so why should my baby). Interesting, people are.

My toddler is so into different food. He had lobster the other night, and duck last week. He eats all sorts of stuff! I love that about him.

Thank you so much to all of the lovely people who offered their congratulations.... but I''m worried I may have spoken too soon.
15.gif
I woke up this morning with some low back pain and a considerable amount of spotting on the toilet paper when I went to the bathroom. It was dark reddish-brown, not bright red... but definitely not light in color. It seems to have stopped for now, and no abdominal cramping... but the back pain is there and from what I''ve read, not a great sign when combined with spotting. I called my doctor''s office but haven''t heard back yet. I''m feeling really discouraged, obviously.
7.gif

ephemery, my thoughts are with you and i'm keeping my fingers crossed that your little bean is okay! I've heard that brownish blood is okay. It's old blood and shouldn't be cause for concern but I'm not sure about the back pain. Hope you hear from your doctor's office soon!

eph, just wanted you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you. please keep us posted.....

Thinking good thoughts for you Ephemery. I hope all goes well. Hang in there.

Thinking about you today, Eph. I hope all is well.....Please let us know when you can how you are doing. *Hugs*
