Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

dd - NO offense was taken! seriously, i was a bit taken aback when my dr. mentioned it as well so i understand your reaction.

i do think they err on the side of caution, and frankly, like you, i do the same. if i can easily avoid/minimize something that MAY have an adverse affect (even on a small sample of people) i do so just for my own peace of mind. you have no idea how much i miss my morning cup of tea! but it''s a sacrifice worth making i suppose.

as my dr. said...the next few months are all about you babying yourself haha. i kinda like that

It is hard because there are some things I cannot avoid, like air travel. That''s why the internet comes in handy, as do friends like Indy
2.gif
who will look stuff up for you, because sometimes you really need to assess the risk/reward for yourself. For example, I get very very airsick, and typically take medication for travel. When I found out I was preggo I was worried that I would not be able to take the meds when I fly, but I did a bunch of research and called a few pharmacists etc and found out that gravol is safe for pregnant women to take: although there have been no controlled experiments PROVING it is safe (and so many doctors will not recommend it and it is not on the official "safe" list like Tylenol and Diclectin--the only two officially safe drugs!), large scale studies have shown that it does NOT cause any increased risks for miscarriage or birth defects beyond the normal rates. And it is an acceptable and commononly prescribed medication for morning sickness when m/s is severe and doesn''t respond to commonly used treatments. So although I am going to try flying without taking it (that should be fun!
14.gif
), I am also going to take it if I really need to!

Anyhoo, that is my rant.

agreed...sometimes there really is no other way. my m/s was so bad but i wanted to hold off on taking any meds because i wasn''t sure it was safe for the baby.

all that happened was that i ended up eating next to nothing for a few days and decided that it was probably worse to not give the baby nourishment than to take the meds, and i''ve been taking 1/2 a pill of anti-nausea meds a day ever since.

my sister is also a dr. so at times she can be my sanity check for these things.

Oh, hey, I hope my post didn''t sound snippy or judgmental! I sure didn''t mean it to be. I get a little bit capital letter happy sometimes, which come across as ''yelling'' when all I mean to do is emphasize.

I only posted that because my mom was getting herself all freaked out about my long trip to come look after her, and even after my doctor said there really was no reason to worry, I thought citing some evidence would help my mama feel calmer. I had only just been looking the stuff up, so I thought I''d share it.

I agree it''s best to minimize unnecessary risks, but derailing your life... or not visiting your mama who is sick with cancer. I don''t know. I mean, it was interesting to learn that working women have a higher rate of miscarriage. But is that going to make me quit my job? Heck no. And I''ll be at my mama''s bedside come hell or high water.

Diva -- he''s gorgeous!!! congrats again

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the names -- it''s just so nice to be able to call the babies something other than "a" and "b"

I wanted to bump up the Baby Nurseries thread but it won''t let me reply -- does that mean it''s locked? how do we open it? Sorry for having no clue, but i really like that thread and want to see more!

Well gals, I had to travel a lot in my 1st and 2nd tris, plus I had a 15 hour plane ride to and from Australia when I was 6 months pregnant.

They cut off the extra fingers and toes on Amelia when she was born. No harm, no foul.

9.gif

Obviously kidding, but I do agree...stay off the plane if possible, if only because it''s a pain to travel when preggers. TGuy HATED that I had to do it because I am stubborn and always carry on my stuff (I pack light) and don''t ask people to help me hoist the luggage overhead. I figure if I can''t lift it, then I shouldn''t carry it on. I always told TGuy I asked for help though during the time I was preggo...hee hee.

I just sent an email to Andrey and asked him to unlock the thread so we could post there. Hopefully it gets unlocked soon. I like that thread too!

Warning vent coming! (it's irrational and I know it so please don't tell me I am crazy or my priorities are out of whack, I know already I am crazy and I don't plan on going if there is ANY worry from my doc about my babies-I just need to vent)
1.gif
):

So today I get notification that not one but TWO papers of mine have been accepted to one of the top conferences in my area (I am working on a Ph.D. for those who don't know). These papers are in totally different substantive areas too, so I am SO PROUD of myself for getting both accepted. Not to mention the fact that these are the first conference papers that I have actually written (co-authors, but I am primary) because this is the first year I have been doing research as opposed to classes.

And what do I think? DA*N the conference is November 4. I will be just shy of 32 weeks, and probably won't be able to go because of these DA*N twins! I know that I should be thrilled about the twins, and most of the time I am, but I am so annoyed right now that most likely I won't be able to go to this conference and present my papers because I am having two!

Luckily my coauthors are going too, so I am hoping to be able to convince them to present the papers...but if not, they'll get pulled. I am so irrationally annoyed by this development, I almost wish they hadn't been accepted!

Ok sorry, vent over. I'm just really sad that I probably won't be able to go (I know the latest a preggo woman with twins *can* travel is 32 weeks, so I am assuming my doc won't want me to go). The conference is in LA, so I would have to fly. But the most important thing is the health of my babies so of course I would rather not go than risk something happening...but I am still so sad!

Indy your post was totally helpful, not snippy! I thought I sounded snippy that's why I said sorry to SBDE. These hormones must be making us all sensitive or something
3.gif

NF Girl I hear you!! My baby is due Feb 28 and all I can think is how if some jobs end up being posted later or some jobs don't get their act together to interview before Christmas, then I may not be able to interview! You can love your babies and be annoyed at them at the same time
2.gif
And a big old congrats on getting the papers accepted! You know what? Even if you can't personally present them, try to get one of your co-authors to do it because you can still put them on your vita! At least that's how it works in my field, and every little bit counts. And think of it this way... there may be one or two lost opportunities for you now because you are having the kids earlier in you career, but other women will face the same thing later on, so it all evens out. There is no "good" time to have kids in academia so you might as well do it when you want to and just swallow those lumps!

ETA Jen: I forgot to tell you I love those names! I also worry a little about choosing a common name, but in the end loving the name should win out over things like that, so I am really happy you get your fave name after all!

NF, first of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!
36.gif
Getting two papers accepted to one of the top conferences is a great accomplishment and you should be proud of yourself! Don''t feel bad for feeling sad. It''s natural to feel disappointed you won''t be able to attend the conference and present your papers. I''m sorry the timing isn''t great.
7.gif
I hope your coauthors can help present.

NF,
Congrats, that''s so awesome. Hoping the coauthors can present for you. You should be very proud!! I understand your frustration at the timing of all of this. But HUGE kudos to you!!
36.gif

Dreamer, Snlee, and Kaleigh: Thank you for your kind and quick responses! This is why I post here, I knew you all would understand. I feel like I can''t vent to anyone in my life right now who doesn''t have kids/want them soon because they''ll all be like "told you it was stupid to have kids now", ya know???

DD: You are totally right that others will lose out later...now all I have to do is convince my coauthors to present (easier said than done considering they are two of my advisors!) instead and then I can still put it on my vita...just need to remember it''s worth it for the babies...and of course there is still a *chance* I can go, but it would be last minute.

If they are attending the conference anyway maybe they will be understanding and do it for you. If not, it is your vita not an official court document, so you can always cite the papers as "accepted to present" or something under your presentations section. Being accepted is the hard part if it was a peer reviewed conference, so it really doesn''t matter in vita terms if you can''t actually present. I know there are benefits to presenting for your career, especially if you do a great talk, but in the end it won''t make that much difference if you can''t actually do the talks. I do hope you do it though, I can only imagine the looks on people''s faces if you showed up to do your talk 32 weeks preggo with twins

! hee hee I''d love to see it!

Diva, congratulations!

Welcome to James Emerson!
35.gif
He is such a cutie and that is a great name. Sorry to hear you had such a tough time with the placenta and the episiotomy – I hope you are getting some time to rest and recover.

Pave, we are having a girl. We have seen the Uppa, but our local store has it in green and does not have swatches for the other colors. I called Uppa today and they were so nice – they are sending me swatches of the plum and blue. Make sure you keep up with the vitamins. I have never been good at taking them for me, but I am religious about it now that they are for her. The bonus is that my hair and nails are growing like crazy.

Q, you are seriously all belly. That seems to be the only part of you that grew between week 7 and week 35. Have fun at your showers.

Snlee, yay for the 6 month mark! It’s unreal isn’t it? I catch myself doing the waddle too – I have to concentrate to remember to walk straight – DH likes to poke fun. Have you talked with your Dr. about the sciatic nerve pain?

LIA, I would love to make it to the Tucson gem show some day. I finished sewing one of the 2 shades, but the folds have to be trained for a few days before it can be hung. I’ll post a pic once I get the shades and cornices hung.

Jen, yay for good baby weights. Sorry to hear about your PSD. Marina and Sophie are great names!

Gemma, nice u/s pic and cute little belly.

Eph, that sounds really stressful. When will you get to see your Dr. this week? I like your dad’s prescription.

Indy, it is hard not stress about every little thing, especially at the beginning. Of course, I figure plenty of European women go through their pregnancies consuming unpasteurized cheese, cold cuts and wine, so I am not going to worry too, too much about everything I put in my mouth.

Jas, lol re “large and in charge.” I hope your appointment went well.

Janine, I hope you have a great shower.

Regalada, glad to hear breastfeeding is going better. I hope you are getting some time to rest.

Dreamer, sorry to hear the bloat is hitting you. How did the mid-wife info session go?

Neatfreak, that’s exciting that you can feel the twins already. Congrats on having 2 papers accepted – what a great accomplishment.

36.gif
36.gif
It is natural to feel disappointed that you may not be able to present them. Hopefully one or both of your co-authors will step up.

I got good news at the Dr. yesterday. He did a u/s, and it looks like things have shifted as the baby has grown. The placenta is no longer covering the cervix, so he said I can go to France!

9.gif
DH and I are now scrambling to get ready, as we haven’t done much to prepare for the last 5 weeks because the odds of being able to go were so low. Between now and next Monday, I have to finish projects for 11 clients!
23.gif
They aren’t all large projects, but it is a lot and I get interrupted a lot during the day for calls and meetings. Fortunately, I do not have to do too much to prepare for the trip itself, because I still have my notes from our last trip to France. Packing should be easier this time because I have a limited number of outfits that fit to choose between. By biggest problem is trying to find comfortable walking shoes ASAP. I had planned on taking my black and brown Clarks walking sandals since they are super comfy and have good support. I have been living in them the past 6 weeks. Unfortunately, over the past 2 weeks both pairs have become too tight. I usually wear a narrow shoe and now I need a medium. So far, I have not found anything with a comfortable, well-padded, flat sole and soft leather uppers (I hate blisters from stiff leather).

I assume since there is not a previa problem anymore that the ban on “physical” activities has been lifted along with the travel ban, but I didn’t think to ask yesterday.

Anyway, I might not be around much this next week, and then I will be gone for 3 weeks. I hope everyone does well in the interim.

Kay When you are in France, here is a phrase you should remember: "Excuse moi, ou est la salle de bain?" Translation: "Excuse me, where is the bathroom?"

Neatfreak, congrats! I''d be bummed too...so I''m with ya there.

Kay, yay for France! I hope you have an awesome trip!!!

NF - Congrats on your two papers! Bummer that you may not be able to attend. Hopefully your co-authors will present or you''ll end up making it.

Kay - Have a blast in France.

Our stroller and bassinet came in, and we assembled it. I can''t wait to use it. =)

Kay, great news! I am glad you get to go to France! Have a great trip!

Kay, that''s exciting! Also, if you need to tell someone that you are pregnant you say "Je suis enceinte", although I''m sure we could all figure out some effective charades to communicate that one.
2.gif
Where are you going in France?

NF, congrats about the papers. If your co-authors aren''t interested in doing it, consider asking a friend who will be there who is not a co-author. I''ve seen this done a couple of times at academic conferences. Once, the author''s wife was in labor, and believe me, everyone was all "Awwww!" not annoyed or anything. And the other time the author had become seriously ill. While a random friend won''t be able to answer questions from the panel or the audience, they will be able to write down the questions people had, so that: a) you can answer them by e-mail if you want and more important b) you get an idea where people see trouble with your argument before you try to publish the papers.

I''m sure if your friend says "Neatfreak is having twins any day now!" then everyone will be very understanding. And it''s always better to have the paper there than not. It shows a real commitment, instead of just dropping out (which people would also understand).

Just another option!

Boy do I feel hungover this morning. No, of course I wasn''t actually drinking. But yesterday was definitely among the days of my life when I most wished I was.
25.gif
at least my mom''s surgery is over, and if she doesn''t need chemo, then that was the worst of it. Keep things in perspective. Stay positive. Right?

Good morning!

While nature usually makes sense to me, I have to say that this whole "I can''t sleep because I have a boulder in my abdomen" is confusing. Would not nature want soon-to-be mommies to rest up? I don''t really need "practice" for sleep deprivation. What''s fun is that tossing and turning is nearly impossible as well...i kinda have to throw my belly out in front of me, then make a 3-point turn. I''m sure it''s just delightful to the dog, who is my bed buddy.

But honestly, if that''s the worst thing about this pregnancy, I''m pretty darned lucky!

It''s been fun at my folks house. Now I get to play with three doggies and not just George (although he gets very jealous, the little silly.) I swear that dogs are the best joy-inducers in the world. I say that never having owned a kitty, so I am sure those work too!

Janine-- hey girl! Hooray for more movements! When is the shower? I''m so jealous...my shower people are too superstitious to have one before the babies show up. Not my choice. I hope that you''ll share all the details!
regalada glad to hear BFing is going a little better! How is your recovery going?
dreamerYes, i am on modified bedrest (6 hours a day...I think I''ve read a gazillion books, which is wonderful!) I am so sorry about the "morning" sickness. Hang in there! i totally remember around 6-7 weeks just being one big ol'' bloaty bloat bloat. It''s not fun.
jen -- thanks for the compliments, and I will check in frequently. After all, who else do I get to report my weekly cervical checks to? (come on, I know you all log in just to see if I''m dilated!) I adore the name Sophie as well...sounds like you''ve hit on two winners there! LOL -- i totally get that "OMG, please do not have your water break here" look from all sorts of business owners/workers. I''m so tempted to just dribble a glass of water down my pants for fun. But I guess that''s mean.
Indy -- sorry you''re a little queasy these days. Blech. So far the boys are staying grounded (I also told them no tv while they''re in there. Who knows what sort of electronics DH has been slipping to them while I''m asleep.)
31.gif
I do hope you feel better soon.
snlee Doesn''t it feel like just yesterday we announced on here? I can''t believe how far we are! I am so sorry for the sciatica. That is no fun at all without being pregnant, so I can''t imagine what the shift in your balance is doing. Hang in there!
Kaleigh Thanks! I am resting...probably too much. My brain has turned into cottage cheese.
Pave Stay cool. 100 degrees is nothing to mess around with! As far as second city, I am only taking classes there (but it''s the same type of classes all the greats took...everyone starts on the same path.) I don''t know if anything will come of it, but it''s a blast. I miss it a lot. I promise to let everyone know more about the silly book once I''ve actually stopped "brainstorming" and just get down to business.
Diva James just takes my breath away! Congratulations...what a precious bundle! Your words about your son made me well up.
30.gif

Diver thanks! They''re probably coming sooner rather than later because I just get a sense that my body is starting to prepare me for Labor Day in August (or late July). Did you have a sense or were you surprised?
QTHave a wonderful time at the showers! Enjoy!
Burk I have told the boys that there would be a lot of PS "aunties" (to borrow Indy''s term) who would give them a stern lecture if they come too soon! Thanks for the well wishes. And, oh, your avatar...*sigh*
NF Heartfelt congratulations on the papers! (Plural!) That''s remarkable! I hate to sound all philosophical, but I believe it will all work out for you (professionally). But, if you are worried, are there other transportation options? Is there a way to link you up via satellite? I think others on this board made great suggestions.

Ok, breakfast time. Have a great day!

Hey NF, Jas has a good idea there. If you could get a friend to present the paper (you really want someone there in person, for, you know, audience connection), then you could answer questions via Skype or something. Satellite may be asking too much
41.gif
, but there''s bound to be internet in the conference rooms.

NF, that's terrific news about the papers! I have a paper in November but won't be as far along as you (only 6 months), so it should be doable. Plus, as far as I know, I'm only having one. I'm afraid to tell people about the pregnancy because I'm pretty sure I won't get much sympathy (I'm youngish, and it was pretty dumb timing). I also want to give a paper in April at my field's major conference, but I would hate to leave a 2 month baby at home. But if they accept my paper, I will most likely go. Ugh. It definitely stinks that the clock never stops in academia!

I hope your co-authors are willing to present the papers for you. Even if you can't answer questions via Skype or whatever, at least your work will be out there for people to think about.

Someone, forgive me as I don''t remember who, on the Mommies thread gave a GREAT idea about having to go somewhere when the baby is young. Bring your DH and have a mini-vacation! Then your DH can watch the babies while you are presenting and you don''t have to leave them at home. I thought that was brilliant, assuming you can afford the ticket.

Unfortunately I just don''t know if I will be allowed to travel at all. I called my Dr. this morning and left a message to ask if he thinks it''s even feasible assuming everything stays on track. According to the airlines I am allowed to travel until 32 weeks and I will be 31 weeks for the conference, so I juuuuuust made their travel restrictions.

As for other travel options, it would be a really really long train/car ride. And I would have to be gone like 5-6 days instead of 2, so I think I am only going if I can fly. The flight isn''t bad (basically Chicago to LA) so everyone just cross your fingers for me please!

And TGal, Kay, Q, and Jas THANK YOU for all the congratulations and ideas! I will certainly have to mull it over...I don''t know if they would be able to figure out skype or something...we aren''t the most technologically advanced field, at last year''s conference they didn''t even have wifi availailable! You had to go to the business center at the hotel. Annoying huh?

Dreamer, TGal, QT, Snlee, Indy -- Thanks! I am looking forward to the trip. We leave on Tuesday and will be there until August 2. I am hoping to find a few cute baby things so that Wiggle Worm will have souvenirs from her first trip to France. Of course, the current dollar/euro conversion rate will probably temper my shopping urges. I''ll be taking my 28 week photos in Burgundy! (But not bare belly -- don''t want to scare the locals.)

I would appreciate any tips on traveling while pregnant. I am going to take Tylenol and Tums, as well as the usual first aid stuff like band-aids and antibiotic ointment, and of course my prenatals. Anything else that is advisable for weeks 27-29? I hope hemis would not be an issue this early. Also, I have never flown with a travel pillow before, but wonder if I should buy one for this trip. Do those special wrap around neck pillows really help? Any other "comfort tools" I should shop for? I would probably be fine if I could get two of those little airline pillows for my back and one for my head, but it seems like they are often in short supply.

Someone else may have also suggested it, but I was the one who proposed bringing the hubby along as a babysitter. Actually, lots of female academics in my field do this. Next February at our major conference, three of my friends are planning to hire a nanny to come with them to the trip and watch all their kids (I think there are 3) during the conference! There are ways to make it doable, and these types of accommodations are really just required if women are going to be come full contributors in academe.

I have already told DH that if I have any job interviews in December or January, he will have to come with me
2.gif
, just in case I go into labor early and also for the foot rubs. He is totally cool with that. And if it turns out that there are job interviews later in the season after I have the baby, he will also come along to look after him/her while I am off being a smarty-pants! I''ll just have to excuse myself regularlt durign the day to pump or breast feed

Hey Neatfreak congratulations on two papers being accepted! Wow that is so cool. You must feel so proud. I hope when the time comes you get to go or have your advisors present for you. It''s crazy to me that in today''s world, women in academia have to feel so torn about having babies/having a career. Sucks.
I can understand why you feel disappointed that you may not be able to travel b/c of the l.o.''s My former colleagues are all leaving for a surgery trip to Ecuador in a couple of weeks and I am so bummed that I am not going. Last year I was talking about it with my friend while we were in Nicaragua on a different trip. We were saying "nope not coming next year- gonna be busy" (with babies) and I am so happy that my wish came true but I can''t help but feel like I really wish I was going with them. I guess I could have if I really wanted to as I am not too far along. But we usually go to Nicaragua and I just didn''t feel like putting myself in some possibly harmful places with water, food, etc. anyway, sorry this turned into a long story but I think I know how you feel a little.

Kay- that is great news that you are cleared to go on your trip!!! Yahooooo! It is so nice when things work out the way we would hope. I hope you have a fantastic time. Did you find shoes yet? I am kinda bummed that my foot size will probably change- I know it''s vain but I just don''t want them to grow.
I hope your projects go smoothly for you. Yikes, 11 sounds like an awful lot. Good luck! OH and that is good about getting the swatches. I think my dh is gonna agree to the uppa. We are getting a ton of handme downs for the baby- bassinet, portacrib, swing and bouncer from my friend- she is a savior. I keep adding up the savings to justify spending more on a stroller- haha.

Qtiekki- that is fun that your stroller came in! Are you playing around with it? I am stroller obssessed. I am not sure why. It seems easier to focus on this than worry about other stuff.

Hey has anyone researched or taken the class for hypno birth? I am reading a little about it. Curious to know what you guys are planning on using? Are you taking childbirth class?

Jas- so we are going to get to say we knew you when, after you make it big time? This is so exciting. I am sorry that you are having trouble sleeping. I am pretty sick of getting up to pee every couple of hours. I miss my sleep. I feel kind of bad cause I think things like "this is baloney(I don''t really use the word baloney)" as I am marching (stumbling) to the br. I feel guilty for being annoyed. Poor baby. not me the little one. I know I am in for it in the third tri too. I feel for you. Hang in there and keep resting. Re: when the babies will come- do you think you relally know? I think if a person is in tune with their body it would make sense that you would know when things are getting ready to happen. Glad the pets are cheering you up!! How long until your husband comes home?

I would appreciate any tips on traveling while pregnant.

Hi Kay I found this fabulous website with lots of tips and even personalized help. It''s the one I posted with the research about flying while pregnant:

Pregnant Traveler

I hope it helps. I think a key thing is drinking a TONNE of water and moving around as much as you can, since we are more susceptible to deep vein thrombosis while pregnant. But the website has lots of other tips too.
