Sunkist - we used olive oil for the baby's butt. It helps to keep the meconium from sticking as much.I think some people also use it for perineal massage.
Qtiekiki, we end up getting him a "Go & Grow Lil' Rollin" Giraffe" from little tikes. Little B is only careful when food is going into his mouth, everything other than food not so much. Sorry to hear about your SIL wanting to compare, just ignore her. I don't get how some people like to compete with other people's kids. I understand when a parent gets concern if the baby isn't hitting the milestone at a certain time but don't make other parent feel like your kid is better than theirs. Yay on M crawling
lili, that protective head gear sounds exactly what my DH want for little B. I think if our 2nd kid is a girl, DH will spoil her rotten and wrap bubbles around her. Maybe you can ask your pedi about the soy milk before giving it to J? I was so off on little's new toy. It's actually a "Go & Grow Lil' Rollin' Giraffe" from little tikes, I just rememberd it's a giraffe. I am also getting him a Fisher Price Ride On/Trike/Tricycle - Ready Steady Rider off Craiglist and will go pick it up tomorrow.
Diva, glad to hear the surgery went well. Does she still need to have radiation treatment?
Burk, sorry to hear about T's ear infection and her lungs. Poor girl~ hope she gets better soon.
NYC, the twins are so tiny and adorable!!
Thanks Tacori, so funny that Tessa won't let you shower.

Ditto, only our midwife is out-of-network so we''ve been making payments to her at every visit so that we don''t have a humongo lump sum at the end.Date: 4/23/2009 8:42:28 AM

Fisher, we pay only at the end. It''s called global billing and basically the Dr''s office bills for everything after the delivery. I think it''s a pretty common way for doctors to bill. This means we don''t have a copay at each office visit (it would get ridiculous at the end when you have to go every other week and then every 2 weeks!) and we''ll only end up paying our inpatient copay at the end. My doc doesn''t have an u/s machine in the office and she doesn''t draw blood either though so we had to pay 20% for each of those things. Quest (where I get my blood drawn) is really slow with their billing though and we actually haven''t gotten any bills for this pregnancy yet (got one for my m/c bloodwork a couple months ago).

Courtney - if you''re ''behind'' on the perineal massages, then so am I. I still haven''t done any.
I don''t think it''s that common to do perineal massage. I''m just being demanding
You are expected to have your bags ready from 37 weeks, so that if you go into labour unexpectedly your partner can bring them in pronto after you have delivered.Date: 4/23/2009 10:12:33 AM

Tacori - Good to know about the Boppy getting to be more useful. I was feeling like I wasted money if I was only going to use it for a week! My understanding is that most people tend to overpack for the hospital in this country and that all you really need is the stuff you mentioned, but Pandora's in England where the hospitals provide basically nothing - not even diapers. Crazy, huh?
Pandora - I've been wondering - what if someone goes into labor unexpectedly and doesn't have their bags with them? Does their baby just not have any diapers until a friend/relative brings it?
Ah, my rib pain started in the back and the front at the same time - like a burning pain just under your boob, and only on one side. After about 8 weeks it moved to just being in the back and turned from rib flare into the costovertebral inflammation. If you google ''rib flare'' you''ll get quite a lot of info on it. One movement that does help is to raise the arm on the side that hurts and bring it over your head and bend towards the side that doesn''t hurt - it opens the space up and should help a bit (only sadly one can''t walk around with your arm above your head all the time)...Date: 4/23/2009 11:40:25 AM

Pandora- Thank you! I wouldn''t wish the rib pain on anyone either. I''ve been able to get more sleep these past few couple of nights, though- it hasn''t seemed to bother me as much now that I know it may be baby feet? The doctors at the hospital couldn''t give me a definite reason as to why it hurt in the front AND the back.
Courtney- You''re almost there! Wow. Any day now!
mela- You too! Home stretch, gal!
RE: Breast pads, one of my due date communities was recently polled about this very thing and disposables won by a landslide. The Lansinoh brand seemed to be the most popular.
p.s. Nice hospital bag lists! I''m going to go over them today to begin piecing my own together.
