Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

I had another appt this mornring...

Everything looked good, except for my weight.

I knew I was gaining too much, but I have no idea where it is going. I am up to 17 lbs at 22 weeks. Doesn't sound horrible at first glance, except for the fact that up until 16 weeks I had only gained 2 or 3lbs. Almost all of my weight gain has been in the last month.

She specifically told me that it wasn't the overall weight, what worried her was how much I have gained since my last appt 2 weeks ago. I just don't see what I am doing wrong, other than not exercising, which I DEFINTELY need to be getting dilligent about.

I could crawl under my desk and cry. I have my 1hr Glucose test at my next appt on the 21st. That should be a better indication of whether or not my weight gain is still a problem.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome, I absolutely am obsessed with this forum from the LIW list to the Show me the ring to now I think I''m hooked on this thread! I''m trying to catch up on all of the other preggers stories/questions/and how far everyone is along so I look forward to chiming in with you all soon!!

WOW, Kimberly- it''s a small world! I''m a fellow Catholic school girl too- went to St. Genevieve, but came **this close** to going to Alemany. I grew up in the East Valley, but now live in the West Valley.

ginger- funny story! THANKS for the chuckle and the advice

Meresal- I''m sorry that you''re feeling down about your weight. I''m not preggo weight savvy at all, but it really doesn''t sound like it''s a lot. Hugs, hun!

re names: how timely- DH and I had our first "real" convo this morning. for now, we''re just joking about the names, but eventually we''re going to have to get serious about it. however, I think we''re on the same page on middle names- my mom''s (Maria) if it''s a girl, his dad''s (Paul) if it''s a boy.

THANKS for the advice on the class. It sounds great on paper, and if the timing works out (no conflicts) then we may just do it. I''d be 23 weeks along by the time it''s over. All in all, it''s 15 hours (2.5 hrs/class x 6 weeks) I still have DH looking into the details and asking what their thoughts are on timing.

Welcome, So Excited! I''ve thought about getting one of those dopplers but I am a worrier so I''m not sure it would do me any good.

Meresal, I''m sorry you''re upset about your weight gain. I think that just happens sometimes when you''re petite and it''s also common mid-pregnancy. If your size 29 jeans are just getting uncomfortable now don''t sweat it. Heck, most gals don''t fit a 29 pre-preggo! I have to admit that I was a little shocked when my OB said my weight gain should be between 20-30 pounds. I thought for sure most women gained more like 40. I''m a little worried because I lost about 25 pounds on WW (145 to 120) and I''m really having a hard time adjusting my habits. I got used to my alotted points which works out to 1500 or 1600 calories. Do I add my 200 additional calories to that or bump myself up to the recommended 1800 to 2000 calories THEN add 200? Since the weight''s only been off for a little under a year, I''m concerned my body will start packing it on pretty quickly.

I need opinions - we''re almost 8 weeks pregnant and haven''t told anyone (except my BFF who knows my cycle better than I do!). We plan to tell DH''s parents tomorrow because they go to Florida for the winter (he insists we tell them in person which I totally understand) AND this is there first biological grandchild. I''m not really ready to tell anyone else yet but feel that my parents may be hurt that my ILs know weeks before they do. Right now, our plan is to tell everyone else after either by OB appt at 10 weeks if we hear the heartbeat again or after my NT scan two weeks later. So, the ILs would know 3 or 4 weeks ahead of everyone else. Am I being unfair to my parents? My other worry is that we''ll ALL be together this Sunday and ILs will have to keep it hush hush and I''m not sure it''s fair to ask them to do that either.

Vesper
Hope L&D goes faster for you this time. I’ve heard that the second birth is usually quicker, but sometimes the third ones is slower. So good luck.
Mara
We don’t have a name yet. We had a short list of two names before, but it doesn’t seem like DH are as sure about them anymore. And then he’ll come up with names every once in a while. Nothing we both like yet. With Meena, it was so much easier. Boy’s names are hard.
So Excited
Welcome and Congrats.
Kimberly & Mara
You are making me want some tamales. Yum.
Kimberly
Have a good trip to your parents’.
I can’t get comfortable with my stomach either. This guy is just squishing my stomach. I can’t wait until he drops.
ChargerGrl
Hopefully they offer the class on a regular basis, so you can take one little later on. 18 weeks might be a little too early in that you might not remember things from the class. But if there’s no other classes offered later on, then I say you should take it.
GingerB
LOL on the flopping beached whale. I am familiar with that situation.
RPS
Our childbirth class instructor told us to wait until we can’t walk or talk through the contractions before heading to the hospital, and that’s what I did. I agree with you that it’s a good guideline. If I went in any earlier than that, I would’ve been stuck at the hospital for a long time. But since I waited and labored at home (for 20 hrs), I only spent 5hrs in the L&D.
Yay for the confirmed dates for homebirth.
Meresal
Don’t stress about the weight gain. You were underweight pre-pregnancy, so I am sure your body is just doing what it needs to for the baby. Plus 17lbs at 22weeks is not a lot.

Mere, I''m sorry you''re worried about it

That actually doesn''t sound that bad - less than a pound a week! - and you started off really petite to begin with. I know doctors try to keep you from gaining weight too quickly, but it''s really out of your hands, especially if you eat well. Some women can work out hardcore and eat perfectly the whole time, and still gain a bunch of weight. Your body knows what you need, so try not to stress out too much doll. I think you''re doing great!

- - - - -

We had snow overnight, so I am cooped up in the house today working (or trying to - I have zero motivation) on Xmas gifts. Both DH and my mom got to feel the baby kick this morning, so he must really like this weather, but every time someone else feels the baby kick I start crying like a doofus. I am completely unable to control it, but it''s usually just a few tears, thank goodness.

gingerB, LOL @ getting stuck in the middle of the bed! Shoot, I do that NOW - our bed is in a corner, so I have to scoot across it to get out, and sometimes it is just way harder than it should be. When I get bigger it will be hilarious, your story really gave me a giggle lol.

Charger- Thank you. I appreciate it! *Hugs*
Pupp- I would tell all of the parents together.
We waited 2 weeks after telling my IL's to tell my parents, but that is because we were waiting to see them in person. I think that if you are going to see them in person, then I would tell them at the same time.

Thanks for your reply about my post. I stright up asked my doctor today at the enxd of our appointment what my maximum is, and she said based on my start, I should gain no more than 35. I didn't exactly start out petite, but I definitely started out tall and slender. The bad part is that I gained 5 lbs on our honeymoon, from food, and then I never had morning sickness. I have been ALL gain since we found out.

As far as your eating, I would use the amount of calories you are supposed to be eating to "maintain" your current weight, and then add the 200 to that.

QT and MP- Thanks ladies. The other hard part is knowing that I put 5 lbs on right before we found out I was pregnant, so if I'm really thinking about it, I'm 22 lbs over my normal. I just have to make sure that I stop gaining at such a rapid rate. I guess I have some experimenting to do.

Sorry for the complaining, it is just hard to hear, since the weight gain has been my biggest struggle with the pregnancy.

Meresal, ah, so your trick to looking slim and your cute little belly during pregnancy is that long torso! I had no idea you were tall based on your belly pics! I have the same problem with the eating. I was 120 but DH and I went away for our anniversary then my birthday and I didn''t have time to lose those 5 pounds before I found out I was preggo...man I''m really regretting that now. It could have been done - I had almost 5 weeks.

Maybe I should reconsider telling my folks...I definitely don''t want to hurt their feelings.

Meresal-I wouldn''t stress about it. She should not have made you feel like that. People gain weight at all different rates and it isn''t uncommon at ALL to have a period of high weight gain in a pregnancy. Just eat normally and don''t stress!

Mer, My bestie had the same thing happen, she is also thin and athletic (D1 middle distance) so she put on very little in the beginning, then packed on about 18 lbs just as after the second tri started -so she freaked- and then put on very little till the end, so she put on a total of 28lbs and left the hospital in her pre-preggo jeans riding low. I saw that with my own eyes. I really hope that you can avoid blaming yourself the way she did. Poor girl was on modified bed rest after being dehydrated by a passing cold, so hadn''t been doing her normal workouts. I think she got the mod bed rest only b/c she is an elementary teacher and there really isn''t any "sit still" part of that day. The progesterone is slowing your digestive tract down to a crawl and sucking every calorie out of your food. You are feeding your baby, if you are still sitting pretty in 29s girl, you are looking good. Hugs, did the doc scold you or are you putting this on yourself? Did your doc call your weight a problem? 3lbs a week sounds ok for a skinny girl! My doc told me to expect 30lbs with 25 of that being baby and 5 for me to keep as a souvenir.

So the u/s this morning was inconclusive. Kidneys can apparently be shaped very oddly and this happens frequently in boys, so not to worry, it usually resolves itself. I will meet with the high risk team again on the 4th and 11th and then weekly for a while more. A friend asked if that wasn''t too much "exposure" for a fetus. I believe that u/s are just sound waves, so while being more intense than say the radio...any thoughts on lots of exposure to an us? Drk, I figure you aren''t concerned. But, hm, I''ve had more than 10 so far at 21weeks. Anyway, most of all, thanks for the hugs, we are staying cool. DH says that kidneys can look interesting, just be thrilled that brain and heart are totally boring looking. Oh, and he continues to measure at above avg height :)

awww mere...i am sorry you are down about your gain. honestly 17 in 22 is NOT BAD. i know that it's all been recent but some people just gain differently. it actually bugs me when dr's are super strict about that stuff. if you are not eating chocolate milkshakes 3 times a day then really what does it matter how the weight gain disperses itself if you are still not going crazy? sometimes our bodies do what they want. my friend gained 1 lb consistently thru her 40 weeks and my body is doing no weight gain for 3-4 weeks then gain 3-4 lbs at once. but both of our dr's said that was fine. i am up 32 lbs at 34.5 weeks and i am hoping to be around 35 total but if it turns out to be 40 then that's what it is... i don't eat very much in general and so i know i am not gaining a ton of fat... i am mostly belly. if you are too then you might know your body better than the dr yanno. i wish dr's were more easy going, it's hard enough on us to have to gain and carry it around as it is...!! it doesn't feel better when your dr is telling you that they think you are porking out. BOO on them. and i really wouldn't stress...again if you know you aren't downing lard by the bowlful, let your body do what it wants. oh i was up like 20-22 at 22 so you are still less than me, girl! when we got back from spain i gained like 5 lbs immediately, i think it was because we were so active there but not as much at home. BUT i was also always exhausted on the trip, not necessarily how you want to be.

lol mp re: crying when people feel the baby kick. i always want people close to me to feel it too but he is more active when no one is around so funny.

swimmer... i had a lot of US's til about 20-22 weeks... almost every 3-4 weeks. and then we had our 3d at 30. from what i have read i am not worried re: exposure. i'd have US'd even more if i could have hahaa. i just loved seeing him. sorry that the results so far are not definitive but just stay positive and if it is something you will need to be aware of or can keep an eye on, it's great they are noticing it now. keeping fingers crossed it's nothing to worry about. maybe they are just being really careful.

pupp..re: telling the parents... we told my mom sooner than i told anyone else because she lives near to us and is always over at our house...so i was afraid she'd see something we left laying out and then be upset we didn't tell her. so we told her at i think 7 weeks. but everyone else we waited til about 10-12 weeks and told them all around the same time including grandma's, cousins, etc. greg's family is remote so it was easier to not tell them but it would be hard to see close fam members all the time and not tell them for sure. if you can tell them all closely together i think it would be better, but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way.

got all my tamale stuff ready now just have to ASSEMBLE. the kinda fun but not really since you just wanna eat them right away part. hahaa.

There are no ill effects reported from repeated exposure to u/s waves swimmer. Some people believe the crazies who claim otherwise-but there is nothing scientific to back it up.

Charger, my sister went to St. Genevieve''s, she graduated in 1993. I''m sure we have some familiar names in our memory banks. My first "boyfriend" (I use that term very loosely, we pretty much just talked on the phone) went to St. Gen''s, we remained friends for years, lost touch in my early 20s.

Mer, I feel your pain on weight gain, but don''t beat yourself up. I won''t gain for 3 weeks and then pack on several lbs. in a matter of days (about 5 lbs this time around!).

Tamales: It''s my tradition to make them every year. I usually give them as gifts but I didn''t have it in me to make a hundred this year, I ended up with about 35, they''ll all go to my parents for Christmas Eve dinner. They''re done. I''ve assembled cookie baskets. Now I need to wrap gifts. My husband walked into the kitchen earlier and said "you look exhausted" I took that as my cue to take a break.

Puffy...huge congrats!

Mer, no worries on the weight gain. Like everybody said, we all gain at different rates. I gained 15 pounds in the first 16 weeks! Then it''s only been about 10 since then in the last 20ish weeks. And I''m like Mara, I will go a month without gaining, then boom, 6 pounds that month. As long as you''re being healthy, that''s all that matters. You were teeny tiny (still are) before, so I think you are doing great!

Got to run...just taking a break from baking and cleaning. Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

Thank you everyone. I am feeling better.

I should calrify, that my doctor did not make a big deal about this... it is me, and me alone. My doctor is wonderful and she only mentioned it because it caught her eye. She also assured me that almost every person she has seen in the last 2 weeks has been "above" their average weight gain... probably due to the holidays and extra parties, etc.

I think it just scares me because I gained so much so quickly. I do hope that it is just a stage, and that it will slow down a bit for a little while. I also, admittedly, need to exercise more. I am going to make sure to get my booty on a tread mill and at least attempt to burn some calories.

Congrats puffy!

I''m definitely next, I''ve been having a lot of contractions since yesterday evening, about 5 to 30 minutes apart. They''re not painful though, and my doctor said this morning that I barely had any progress from last week (1cm-ish dilated, 80% effaced, -4 station). So I''m waiting for things to pick up. I think I may have just lost my mucus plug, but she was pretty rough at this internal this morning, so it may be just from that. I''ll keep you posted if I can!

Ohh Anchor!! Keep us updated!!

Good luck Anchor!!! Wishing you all the best!!!!

Hope you have a smooth labor and delivery, anchor!

Yes! Eat healthfully and follow your hunger, but don''t worry about it! The seonc tri is the time of biggest gains, and your body is going to do what it will do. People gain between 15 anf 50lbs as a natural and normal range according to my midwives when I was pg. If you are engaging in moderate excercise and not binging, then what will be will be. Research suggests that guilting has no effect on weight gains. In the UK, they don''t even monitor your weight, did you know that?

I gained like 60lbs and am now at my pre preggo weight 10 months pp. I don''t recommend aiming for that weight gain
20.gif
but it happened and everything came out fine. I had a big healthy boy by a normal v-delivery. I know anecdotes mean little, but thought I would throw that out there.

Regarding length of labor:
I am so glad to hear that those of you with second babies had much quicker labors the second time around. My first labor dragged on for almost exactly 24 hours after my water broke, when they finally sucked him out with the vacuum after 4 and a half hours of pushing - they told me if I didn''t push him out right then we were going in for a C-section, which I didn''t want after pushing for so many hours!

This time around, I told the doctor that we should probably skip all the labor nonsense and go right for a C-section, because I didn''t want to push unsuccessfully for hours once again. But, my OB keeps reassuring me that the second one flies out so fast it''s a night and day difference from a first delivery. He told me that because my body has already experienced a vaginal delivery, everything will progress much faster this time around. I thought that he was just lying to make me feel better, but after reading Puffy''s and other stories, I am feeling much better about labor this time around!
Judging by how loose everything feels now after having a baby, I am not surprised that second labours are faster
3.gif
I feel like the baby will just fall right out without pushing at all!

If it helps, my friend had a very rough first labour and needed forceps for her 5lb premature baby, and then birther her second much larger boy without any problems at all!

Mara We had a horrid time with names. Settled on our boy name early but then never thought of a girl name. We just gave up in the end. It''ll happen, I vote to stop thinking about it.
2.gif

Go Anchor!! Maybe a Christmas baby...! Keep us posted if possible.

DD... I don''t actually think about it very much (names) but every once in a while I am like jeez we are so behind hahaa...esp when the 3rd question everyone tends to ask at this point (after ''how far along are you'' and ''do you know if its a girl or boy'') is ''do you have a name''....hahaa.

We went to our Late Pregnancy class tonite...I was the ''latest'' person in there...which was kind of funny... there were a ton of people who were like 20, 22, 24 weeks...I was like isn''t that still mid? hahaa. Learned about the basics of labor, the stages, phases, and about our hospital, when to come in and when to stay home... saw the tour of the rooms, suites etc...got info on how the hospital administers drugs, what their policies are (like skin to skin, rooming in etc). Then I turned in my pre-admission forms to L&D and gave all the emergency info for our file, paid the copay. We also scoped out the emergency dept, figured out what doors were open when, where to park, etc etc. It made it all seem really IMMINENT, it was a little freaky!! Countdown I guess.

Anchor--
Oh wow, a Christmas Eve or Christmas baby!
Good luck and hope you have a smooth labor and delivery.

Mere--
Don''t stress too much about the weight gain.
You''ll get growth spurt here and there.
Some months you''ll gain more and some months not at all.
17 lbs is not much.
I was up that much at 22 wks...and I''m only 5''.

Mara--
How funny about you being one of the "late" preggo.
When I signed up for my class, they specified that we need to be close to our third trimester.
So most people there are around 30+ wks.

Mer, I''ve got to join the chorus of "don''t worry about the weight gain!" I know it''s hard not to worry since for most of us women, our weight is one of those issues we can''t get away from. As long as you''re eating mostly healthy, I think your body knows what it needs to do. You can look forward to the last trimester when the baby puts on most weight, but you probably won''t! I haven''t gained any in the past 3 weeks.

When I was pregnant with my first, my OB actually yelled at me for gaining 12 pounds between November and December. EXCUSE ME? I had gone home and had Thanksgiving dinner with my family. It was totally worth it and didn''t bother me in the least bit. I gave that OB a little piece of my mind.

Kimberly, that''s awesome that making tamales is a tradition -- I can''t imagine making a hundred! I am thinking tomorrow we might have to see about having lunch at our fav Mexican restaurant because their tamales are to die for and I sure could eat some now!

Anchor, I hope this is it for you! How exciting!
36.gif

All the best, Anchor! Sounds like you''ll be having a Christmas baby!
1.gif

Thanks everyone... Still here this morning. The contractions really space out when I lie down and go to sleep and get more frequent as the day goes by so it''s definitely not real labour yet. They''re getting a tiny bit more intense, but the progress is very slow. I wonder how long it will take for things to really start!

Re: weight gain
I''m amazed (and not in a good way) how some of your doctors can be so strict on weight gain! Unless you have really unhealthy habits, it''s not like you can control it... I had a BMI of 22 pre-preggo and I''ve gained 40lbs. Some months I gained very little and then I''d gain 5lbs in a week! My doctor hasn''t made one single comment. It''s more weight than I would have liked, but hopefully I''ll lose it quickly.

so excited - Congratulations!
36.gif
To me the "placenta sound" is more like a "woosh woosh" and the baby''s heartbeat is a bit more distinct.

So Excited - normal heartrate for baby later on in pregnancy is anywhere from 120-160. I think my kiddie''s has been around 130 for the last few visits, but that''s in the late second trimester. You can always measure your own pulse to compare with what you''re getting on the doppler and be sure it''s baby. There is quite a large healthy range, and it does depend on whether the kid''s moving or sleeping or what.

Mara - I can''t believe you''re getting so close!

Anchor - hope you don''t spend Christmas in the hospital having your baby. My brother''s a Dec 26th baby, and it''s nice to have the separate day for his birthday at least. Good luck!

Meresal - I''m another one who''d gained about 20lb so far by 27.5 weeks. I only gained about 2lb in the first trimester I think, despite no morning sickness, and then made a concerted effort to eat a ton during the second trimester. Even so, I found I had a week or so a couple times in the second tri where I was constantly starving and eating. And then other weeks where I was back to my usual appetite. I''ll go 3-4 weeks and gain a pound, and then 2 weeks later have put on 5-6lb. Seems like I''m basically on track for weight gain at this point now, so I''m just not worrying about it.

We headed out of town last night to go to my brother''s for Christmas. I got stuck working latish at work, so was anxious about home and getting out of town in time. Sure enough, the darn uterus was getting tight quite frequently on the subway on the way home, and continued in the car on the 2 hour drive. Seems to be better today though, so I''m attempting to remain calm. At least now it only stays tight for 10-15 seconds, which I figure can''t possibly be enough to change my cervix. Here''s hoping I''m right! 30 weeks tomorrow, unbelievably.

Does anyone else have weird belly skin? For the last week or so, the skin over the front of my belly has been a little tiny bit red, kind of like a rash. Doesn''t seem to depend on what cream I''m using to stay moisturized. Has only been very very mildly itchy a couple of times, and hasn''t really changed in days. It seems kind of odd to me.

Any tips on leg cramps? I''ve been on magnesium and calcium supplements, but last night if I''d stretch in bed and point the toes of my left foot, I''d get this awful cramp in my left calf and would have to use my right foot to drag my left toes back up towards my shin to stretch it out and get rid of the cramp. Maybe it''s time for Dr Google to come to the rescue.

If I don''t get on tomorrow, Merry Christmas to those who celebrate Christmas!

Puffy, congrats on baby Noah''s arrival!

Anchor, I kept having bouts of light but regular contractions in the final weeks, but they kept petering on out. I had some the night before my water broke that just never went away, and then they got more intense from there. I know it sounds cliche, but when you''re in labor you''ll know it. Good luck!!

Mara, sometimes after seeing their wives go through labor, husbands will just cede the name-choosing to them. So it could work in your favor if you''re still not in agreement at that point.
3.gif
That being said... you feel pretty high after giving birth... and so when DH said "He looks like a George. We''re naming him George," I felt too wonderfully high to argue the point. But George was on our short short list and I like it, so it worked out fine.

Swimmer, I was concerned about potential side effects from exposure to u/s during the paranoid phase of my pregnancy if you dig back in this thread, but as NF said there''s really no evidence to back that up. And even if there was, there''s a definite benefit to monitoring a known potential condition, you know? I really wouldn''t worry about it. I really hope that the issue resolves itself.

RPS, congrats on being so close to clearance for HB! That was a huge milestone for me. Exciting.
