Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

Congratulations Puffy!

Your labor was only 5 hours... how could it be much shorter?! LOL!

Congrats puffy! Welcome baby Noah! Can''t wait to see pictures. Glad your L&D went well!

Yayyyyy puffy! Congrats congrats! I''m glad your labor was actually pretty short. Can''t wait to see him!

- - - - - - -

So here''s a question for you ladies - when could you start to tell which body part was where? Like when I get a kick, I can tell if it''s a hand or foot by how hard of a swat it is, but how the heck can you tell when they just push a body part out? I ask because Micah has a tendency to stick SOMETHING out to the left of my belly button, a lot, and it really hurts when he does it for too long. If I push on it, I can tell it''s a big body part (sort of - it feels big, anyway), but not which part it is.

Congrats, Puffy! Can''t wait to see pics of baby Noah!

Congrats on baby Noah!

I was super sweaty hot for about 1week before I gave birth

Congrats puffy!

Swimmer - good luck tomorrow! They looked for 5 fingers and 5 toes each side during my anatomy scan, so I assume they''d have picked up polydactyly already. Cleft palate I''m not so sure. I had a good profile shot to check out the nasal bone, and a good slice through nose and upper lip to rule out cleft lip. I don''t think I remember seeing them look at the palate.

KimH - I keep forgetting that you and I are due so close together! Hope the 28 week appointment went well for you.

MP - I can''t usually tell. With my anterior placenta, I don''t get to feel too many baby parts despite being so skinny. From the last couple ultrasounds, I know baby''s head down and facing towards my tummy. So I''m pretty confident the low-down pokes I feel is elbow or hand, and the up-top movements are feet or knees. Occasionally I can feel something sweep across above my belly button, which I''m assuming is her bending her knees and sweeping her foot through towards her bum. I wish I had a nice fundal posterior placenta so that I could feel her position better!

Congrats on baby Noah, Puffy!!!

puffy, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Can''t wait to meet Noah!

Hello Everyone,
I just discovered this thread and think it''s awesome!!! I am currently 16 weeks (as of tomorrow) and looking forward to a nice, comfortable pregnancy.. So far so good, I''ve had no symtoms and am still wearing all my regular clothes so I''m happy.... I just bought a fetal doppler monitor about a week ago and am hoping to be able to hear our little munchkins heartbeat here at home without visiting the Doc soon. So far I haven''t had much success with getting a good reading yet - does anyone here have the little doppler (its the one like they have at the Dr.''s office) and have you had luck with much of a reading this early in your pregnancy?

Congrats Puffy and welcome baby Noah!!

Welcome So Excited!!!! Best wishes for a smooth and healthy pregnancy!!!

Welcome baby Noah! Congratulations, Puffy!

MP, I can''t tell what''s what at 28 weeks. Not sure if it''s the anterior placenta or it''s just that I can''t tell.

Drk, we are pretty darn close together. I''m due the second week in March.

Appt. went fine, I have to start kick counts now. Off to do so...

Kim - funny that no one has mentioned kick counts to me. I kind of know her patterns by now. She has the odd quieter day, but otherwise moves enough that I don''t worry. Guess we see her on U/S every two weeks and know that she''s still got great cord flow - maybe that''s enough for them? Or maybe they assume a doc as paranoid as me would be automatically doing kick counts on her own?

So Excited - congrats on 16 weeks! I never got one of those dopplers, but know of people who''ve rented them and some have picked up the kiddo as early as 8 weeks on. I think they''re only supposed to be more reliable after you get to the 12-13 week mark. It''s easier when your bladder''s full (lifts uterus and baby out from behind your pubic bone). I dopplered myself with a hand-held at work at around 13 weeks and again at 14-15 weeks, and was barely above the pubic bone on the right at 13 weeks. Was partway to my belly button and on the left side a week or so later. I think you just have to be somewhat systematic and relaxed with the search and don''t panic if you don''t find it right away. At 16 weeks, you should be able to find something (unless the machine is defective!).

Guess I should go pack for the mini Christmas road trip since I''m working tomorrow too... And once we get back, it''ll be time to get cracking on the house-moving packing stuff!

wow puffy that was fast!! congrats on baby noah!!! and i agree 5 hours of labor is not slow at all, that would be great hehe.

welcome So Excited... you should be able to get a reading on the doppler at 16 weeks, the doctor uses them at 12+ i think.

MP i can''t tell what body part it is at all... i am totally bad about that, i just know if i feel something. most of the time i figure it''s like butt or elbow or knee or something depending on how ''hard'' it is. and i know he is head down so we kind of just estimate.

kimi yay for a good appt. i don''t even bother to do kick counts because our guy moves so much, honestly i notice more when he DOESNT do something. and then i can typically always activate him hehee.

Thank you for the welcome and also the tips on the doppler. I can get a reading, but it isnt the approx 160 that I should be getting - it''s only about 125-130..?? Kinda weird I thought...

I read back a few posts and also want to say congrats on Baby Noah.. I''m soooo jealous of the 5 hr labor!!! This is my second pregnancy and my first labor was 52 hours long... so I''m hoping this one goes MUCH quicker!

Puffy, congrats!! I can''t wait to see pics of Noah!

MP, I can rarely tell what parts are which. The only thing I can tell on a regular basis is baby''s butt -- I know that he''s head down, so when I feel a smooth, round big part pushing out near my ribs, it has to be the butt.

More about weight gain: I''m up 31 lbs. and have held steady for the past 2 weeks, which actually surprises me. The only thing that''s radically different -- and I do apologize for TMI -- is that for the previous couple of months, I''ve been fighting bad constipation, but in the past few days, I''m spent some rather enjoyable time in the bathroom.
9.gif

One important point I will make here is not to be upset by the way you look right after delivery. For at least a few days, you''ll look about 6 months pregnant. I''ve always found this to be the hardest part because the belly goes from this lovely, hard, rounded thing to looking and feeling like a bunch of jelly. UGH. If you find yourself getting really bothered by it, try to remind yourself that it is only temporary!

Mara, you''re very sweet.
1.gif
I *am* blessed with my dad''s high metabolism, but I don''t think that I''m that different than most women. Oh, plus, even though I''ve had a bunch of kids, they''re spaced pretty far apart, so between them, I''ve had plenty of time to get back in shape.

For the stretches for your lower back, can you do the cat stretch like in yoga? You get on hands and knees, and alternate making your back concave and convex.

Am I the only one feeling rather emotional these days? I really think it''s the combo of the stress of Christmas and being pregnant. I got really upset with SO tonight, which is a rarity. Basically, we keep our money separate and he puts money in my bank account for me to pay bills since I do it all online. I went over the bills with him earlier in the month and he assured me that we''d be fine. We ARE mostly fine, but because of the way his LLC is set up, he''s gotten paid into the business account, but we can''t touch that money. That''s fine -- except he kept talking about getting our 3 year old this John Deere tractor and cart that''s $250, plus we got him a few other smaller items. Meanwhile, for my older kids, we''ve spent $80 on each of them and were planning to give them $100 gift cards and the disparity hit me hard tonight. Will doesn''t know if we spend $3000 or $30 on him, but my kids would be well aware that they were getting far less than their little brother.

I suggested waiting until Spring for the tractor -- you know, when he can actually take it outside and ride it and SO made some smart ass remark that just sat wrong with me. I''m trying to find ways to cut the Christmas hemhorrage a little bit and he doesn''t see why this big gift could cause hurt feelings. Finally, I think he did see it, but I was ticked off because I started crying and I''m just not a cryer.

On a good note, I realized that I have 11 days until I''m cleared for homebirth, which makes me very happy. Although I think I''d prefer to remain pregnant until the beginning of February, today I was being hit with all of the less fun things about pregnancy (constant BHs, sore feet, reflux is bad, crying) so I was thinking maybe it wouldn''t be so bad to have one baby out of 6 come early.

that is what i was thinking too. i know with my crappy ''prenatal listener'' ($19.99 at target) i could really only get mine which was about 125 i think. also when my dr puts the doppler on my belly now, she shows me what the baby''s hb is and then she shows me the placenta''s sound...which is like a hb but it''s different. so honestly i dont know i could have figured the doppler out on my own at any given point in time! haha.

also our nugget''s hb has really only ever been around 145-150 when we have heard it...we didn''t start ''measuring'' it til about 15 weeks tho.

rps...thx, i will try the cat stretch, my other preggo friend also suggested something i will try tonite as well. honestly though i feel like anytime i even try to hunch or bend over at all i have a brick under my boobs. ugh. it feels so high. also yep i have heard about the belly you take home with you hehee... i am sure i won''t be all that jazzed about it but hopefully it won''t be around for TOO long.

re: emotional, i haven''t been crying emotional but my temper has been really short lately. i just feel like my patience is thin in general, kind of like when you don''t feel well with a cold or flu or something and you just want to be left alone. that is kind of where i am at.

Hi So Excited -- Congrats on your pregnancy! I think a lot has to do with the type of doppler you''re using. Is it a rental until that''s comparable with the ones doctors use? It may be having trouble picking up the baby''s heartbeat if he''s moving around and that might cause the reading to seem low. Or maybe your baby was asleep at the time?

As for your length of labor, it''s very likely that your labor this time will be much shorter. There are also things you can do to get your labor to be more efficient, such as walking around, changing position, etc. My first labor was 10 1/2 hours, but my second was less than 2 hours.

(Of course, then the other ones were 5 1/2 hours, 4 1/2 hours and 14 hours, although only about 90 minutes of serious labor.)

Regarding length of labor:
I am so glad to hear that those of you with second babies had much quicker labors the second time around. My first labor dragged on for almost exactly 24 hours after my water broke, when they finally sucked him out with the vacuum after 4 and a half hours of pushing - they told me if I didn''t push him out right then we were going in for a C-section, which I didn''t want after pushing for so many hours!

This time around, I told the doctor that we should probably skip all the labor nonsense and go right for a C-section, because I didn''t want to push unsuccessfully for hours once again. But, my OB keeps reassuring me that the second one flies out so fast it''s a night and day difference from a first delivery. He told me that because my body has already experienced a vaginal delivery, everything will progress much faster this time around. I thought that he was just lying to make me feel better, but after reading Puffy''s and other stories, I am feeling much better about labor this time around!

This is the dopplar, it is rated really well and was kinda pricey so I thought it would be great. Thanks for the hopeful wishing on this labor, the first one was never ending.... I actually was really mobile (until the 41st hour when I opted to finally take the epidural) I was on the birthing ball, in the hot tub, walking, and nothing... My contractions were so inconsistent that it just took forever.. I went to the hospital when they were 4 minutes apart and then they went to 7,9,2,3,2,4,10.. ya know what I mean.. I would be happy if this labor was cut in half as they say is what you should expect.

yhst-40043675472013_2083_1503.gif

I thought that it may have been my heartbeat that I was getting also, but I could only get the reading in specific parts of my belly and they were all consistent to the vicinity and area where the Doc had got the heartbeat reading earlier that day at my checkup.. (very low, pelvic area & only readable on one side..) It has been 2 weeks since I tried it so maybe I''ll give it a whirl today again.

Thank you to ALL and your recommendations!

vesper, my first labor was fairly short (about 8 hours) but my second was like the blink of an eye!! It only took 3 1/2 hours from start to finish and that was with a "break" to let me rest before pushing! I know there aren''t any guarantees but I would agree with your doctor that your body knows what to do the 2nd time around so it should go faster!

Drk, it''s interesting how patients have different guidelines from OB to OB.

Mara, my husband said they should ask the spouse/partner of the pregnant woman for a psychological profile before giving them such assignments as giving me an assignment such as kick counts is going to make me crazy. He''s right, but I''ll do it because I''m supposed to.

Today I finish tamales, wrap presents, visit a client this afternoon. Tomorrow we''re off to my parents'' for 3 days. We went to dinner after my appt. yesterday and for the first time my stomach made me uncomfortable. It was a strange feeling. Like I couldn''t get around my stomach to get comfortable.

Labor? That''s something I''m not even thinking about. We start our classes the first Monday in Jan.

so is anyone else having problems coming up with a baby name?? we are 5.5 weeks away from due date and we really don't even have a short list yet of ones we both like. we both like different names and neither of us likes the other names enough to name our kid that. i am not really stressing out since i know the kid has to have a name when we bring him home, so we've got time, but still i wish we had a short list. we have literally gone through hundreds if not a thousand options.

and for the first time last nite i found myself getting irritated with the kicks and activity going on in my gut. it's mostly when i am trying to lie down to sleep or just got up to pee and trying to get back to sleep that he goes all rambo in my belly and sometimes it hurts the belly skin the way he just is punching and kicking all over. i love that he is always active, because it makes it easy for me to know he's doing ok BUT last nite i was like JEEZ CHILL OUT buddy. i guess at this point i will be feeling like that more and more since he's just getting bigger and uterus is just staying the same. i guess i better get used to it!
40.gif

we have a late pregnancy class tonight... i think they go through a lot of the last few weeks and upcoming to labor and also basic labor info. we are not doing the larger class (8 hours) where they cover a lot more of labor, since i just don't have the attn span for that... but i am excited to learn more and have greg hear more about the process. then we have a newborn class 2nd week of jan and that's it!!! i guess at that point we should be 'ready'.
41.gif

kimi...i am making my tamales today too, just have to get the 'famous chili' from grandma then do my assembly. i also need to make an eggnog cheesecake but we'll see how i feel after standing for an hour with tamales. enjoy your holiday!!

Mara - I wouldn''t worry about the name thing. We were in the same boat as you, and honestly towards the end we just stopped discussing names because it got to be annoying and I felt like we were going around in circles. We had NO list going to the hospital. Once he was born though there was a name that had been mentioned once or twice while preggo that just "fit" best once we saw him. I mentioned yesterday in another thread that the name we went w/ was no where close to any of the "rules" I had for a name, but it seemed like the best fit once he was born. You''re getting so close!!!! Good luck!!

Welcome to Baby Noah and CONGRATS to Puffy and Family! What a lovely early Christmas present.

Hiya So Excited- I''m 14 weeks tomorrow, so just a bit behind you.

Kimberly- Safe travels up to your parents''! If I remember correctly, I think they''re close to my neck of the woods (SF Valley)

Mara- I too have have a short fuse lately- it''s been nuts at work and i have no energy for anything else when I get home. I really want to "get into" the Holiday spirit, but it''s hard when you just want to be left alone! I feel for DH, but he''s a total champ.

RPC- WOW, 11 days! Enjoy the countdown

Speaking of pregnancy class, DH discovered that the gym at his work (he''s at a corporate "campus") is having a 6-week "Intuition Birth Class" series led by a Doula/lactation counselor. It starts in late January- I would be about 18 weeks along. Is this too early? Only reason why we''re interested is that they''re offering it for great price ($50/couple). I''ve done a bit of research, and noticed that most classes like these (at least the ones my hospital offers) go for $150. I''ve asked him to check if they have these classes often- perhaps we have another opportunity like in April or May. Anyway, just wanted to get some opinions.

THANKS!

congrats puffy! can''t wait to "meet" baby noah!!!

36.gif

welcome so excited! i agree that likely you are getting your own heart rate. i think thode dopplers can be reassuring, but also drive you insane! knowing me, i opted to not have one as i''d just obsess.

12.gif

RPS - yay on having a nice big solid window for homebirth! it''s obvious from your posts how important that is to you.

vespergirl - i was first born and literally tortured my mom (yikes, hoping i won''t get payback

40.gif
) they used forceps on me after i'';m not sure how long of a labor, including having the car break down on the freeway and my day having to dash across and call an ambulance!
6.gif
my sister, the second born was slipping out in no time. the nurse literally was holding her head as she was crowning as they were whisking my mom in on a stretcher! so best wishes for a slippery second delivery (although maybe not quite as slippery as my sis!)
3.gif

work has been exhaustng. i''ve been on cal 24/7 for almost 2 weeks straight with sick patients and calls all through the night and my body isn''t toelrating it as well as it pre-preggo.

38.gif
and my poor hubby is suffering too, but refuses to let me sleep elsewhere so he can get some sleep. that along with my sonrous snoring, i think he sleeps less than i do.
15.gif

speaking of other unattractive parts of pregnancy in addition to the snoring, yesterday i was goofing around with hubs, kind of play wrestling (gently) on our bed. this is PG i promise.

12.gif
anyway, i ended up in the middle of our king size and started to try to get up and realized i couldn''t, so then i tried to flop over and get up from the side the way i do every morning, but realized i was too far from either edge to be able to use my legs as counterweight to lever my self up. then i started cracking up because i realized i looked like a beached whale with all my flopping and flailing and then hubby started cracking up while trying to help me up so needless to say i remained beached for awhile!
9.gif
i''m sure i could have pushed myself up had i given it a good try, but the situation was so hilarious i was not coordinated enough to get it done.

moral of the story: be careful not to get yourself stranded in the middle of a king size when your almost 8 mos preggo

3.gif

Charger, my parents are just a bit north of you on the 5. I went to Alemany HS for 2 years. That class sounds great, I''d see if they were offering it a bit later, if not you could contact the instructor and see what he/she thinks about you taking it early. We''re starting classes when I''m about 30 weeks.

Mara, I wouldn''t worry about the baby name. I have a cousin who named her son David brought him home and then changed his name to Alexander a bit less than a week later. His name fits him perfectly. You guys will figure it out. Have fun making tamales too!

So Excited, I''m glad to hear that you were able to change positions like that during your last labor! I''d bet your baby just was in a bad position for a while. I know how frustrating it is to have contractions that get closer and then space out! With my last, labor started at 4:30 a.m., contractions were every 10 minutes or so until 6 when my oldest son got up. He kept talking to me...and my contractions slowed way down. From then until about 2 p.m., they were every 15 minutes or so, with some at even longer intervals. I got a pizza because I was starving, and soon after that, the contractions came back. My midwife''s way of telling how far in labor you are is whether you can talk through the contractions -- even when they were 5 minutes apart and lasting a minute, I could talk through them easily. It wasn''t until about 6 that I couldn''t and that''s when she knew to come. She arrived 50 minutes before Will was born, so in plenty of time.

This pattern is consistent in women that have had 5 or more babies, so I wouldn''t look for it in your case, but the guide of being able to talk through contractions might be good for determining when you should go to the hospital.

A Quick Labor Story:

With my 2nd, we went to a dr''s appointment, then bowling (we were on a league). I bowled 2 games, then sat out the next 2 and ate some nachos. We did a quick Walmart run for last minute baby items and then went home, where I started complaining about a stomach ache. I just figured it was those darn nachos!

Finally, I started timing and realized I was probably having contractions, so I called the dr. at 5. He said to come on in, so we went and dropped the oldest at our friends'' and headed to the hospital. We arrived at 5:50 p.m. My water broke at 6 as I was changing into a gown and my daughter was BORN at 6:20. Right before she was born, the dr was in the hallway yelling at the nurse not to let me push because he wasn''t ready. Riiiiight.

Sadly, I didn''t get lucky like that again with any of the others.
9.gif

Mara, we had issues with a name for #3. We knew it was a boy and there were NO names we could agree on. After he was born, the woman from the hospital kept coming in and asking if we had a name. Finally, my husband (at the time) and I sat down with the book and I said "We are picking a name right now so look in the As and don''t even think about going to the Bs." His name is Austin. With the younger kids, I insisted on having a name ready, so they''ve been named after relatives, which gave a good starting point.

Ok, so what''s with the tamale making?? I understand that this is a rather long and labor-intensive process...and you ladies have me drooling over here!!

I''m so sore at this point that spending a day cooking would kill me. I have to make scalloped potatoes for Christmas dinner and am dreading it, so I''ll probably get SO to at least peel the potatoes for me. I hate this part of pregnancy, because normally I''m very active and it stinks to not be able to do things.

thanks cdt... yeah i am such a planner it''s hard to not have a name set...but i know we''ll figure it out. i think we might be getting closer mentally because it is closer to the date...so we both know we HAVE to think of something hahaa, not like there is an indefinite time period. i also am trying not to have too many preconceived notions, but hoping when we see him something clicks.

charger, i''d take the class...why not. i just have procrastinated taking the classes and then was at the mercy of available scheduling. my friend took the big 8 hour labor/delivery/late pregnancy class at like 24 weeks i think. and yeah it used to be like $50 here too but i guess they changed pricing a month or two ago and now it''s like $150 or something. that also helped me not justify taking it, the kaiser 2 hour one is free hehee.
