Active labour Is when you lie down for an exam and barf from the pain

I agree about the time having no meaning thing, mara. It is strange what the labour hormones do to you. I pushed for 1.5 hours and it was very fast. I loved pushing.

if this was the gauge then she was most definitely in active labor!

Dreamer, you loved pushing!? LOL! Okay, seriously, I guess compared to transition phase (mine lasted 2 hours), pushing was okay for 1.5 hours. But after 4.5 hours of pushing, I was pooped, and so FRUSTRATED!

I think of active labor as when your contractions are longer, stronger, and closer together - less than 5 mins apart, lasting about a min or longer, require your attention to get through it, and you''re dilating. I went to 4cm and wasn''t in active labor yet. I wasn''t in active labor until 4.5cm or so when I was finally admitted.

Interesting on the time perception. I just went back and found this:

Check in at 8:20PM
Pill at 9:45PM
Stopped w/shot at around 11PM
Started Pitocin at 2:45 am
Not dilated at 6:30 am
Epidural around 7:15 am
2cm at around 7:30 am
8cm at around 8:30 am
Fully dilated at 11 am
Baby Boy at 12:36pm

Reading that back it seems pretty quick (about 16 hours start to finish) but my memory of labor was not quick at all.

GO MP GO!!

Active Labor: from what I was told, is when contractions are longer, stronger, and closer together. Usually this begins at 4cm. Before this, it''s called latent or early labor and can last (as MP can attest) for days. I spent a lot of hours in latent labor myself and I can definitely say it is not smooth sailing! Your body works very hard for little reward.

My labor was:

Sun 4pm-Cervadil started
Sun 5pm-contractions start
Mon 4am-Cervadil removed (fell out) and 100% effaced and 2cm. Started Pit
Mon 12pm (?)-manually broke water (4 cm?), increased pit
Mon 6pm- got epidural, increased pit
Mon night-still only 6 cm, increased pit
Tues 7am-all labor stopped at 6 cm, emergency c-section

Looking back, yes it was long! I think it felt longer because there were so many hours when nothing was changing. Just working through contractions that didn''t seem to be getting me anywhere. I gotta admit, the thought of no labor this time makes me smile!

DH''s cousin had her baby recently. She labored at home until she was "uncomfortable", went to hospital, too late for epi, had the baby within 4-5 hours. That''s the way it should be for everyone!!

Oh MP--My heart goes out to you! I hope that by now you''ve had Micah and all of that craziness is behind you. I am so surprised that you weren''t admitted, esp with the fall. They could have at least given you a bed in Triage if they were full. It''s one thing to have a long labor (you remind me of my mom who was overdue and then had to endure 48 hours of labor...the universe is darn cruel sometiems!!!) but quite another to be getting tunnel vision and light headedness with contractions, that doesn''t sound right.
40.gif
Hope all is okay now!!

Jcrow--wow, just 2 hours of hard labor after being induced is awesome for a first birth!
36.gif
Did you give that little monkey a name yet?? I am being cheeky, but have you asked her?
41.gif
I have a friend that did this and she swears they heard a name in the baby''s cries. I kid you not.

still no name
7.gif
it''s been so difficult for us to decide. i love one name, but it''s popular. and there is a runner up that is less common, but neither seem like THE ONE. so frustrating. i wish we had this chosen way ahead of time. now there''s no time to talk about it with all the nurses, feedings, etc, etc at the hospital. we have until tomorrow to decide and i''m sooo don''t know what to do!

hum, i was considering active labor the full on pushing part. i think at 5 pm i was started on pitocin and at 1:46 am she was delivered, but i only pushed for about 2 hours, i think. i''ll have to read through my sweet hub''s notes...

oh and i promise to post my birth story. we''re still in the hospital, but hope to leave tomorrow.

jcrow, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Can''t wait to hear her name!

lulu, gorgeous photo as usual! You look great!!

I'm sorry to hear about the preeclampsia. Did they give you mag sulfate? I hope not. That stuff was awful.

What about Isabelle? You could shorten it to Belle for five letters, it's English/French, and it's the name of a saint (though the saint spelled it differently). It has a few different spellings, but this one's pretty common.

Hmmm.

Other five letter French names (or with French versions, according to behindthename.com):

Chloe
Elise
Laura (Laure, in French)- also a Saint's name!
Nadia
Penny (Penelope)

Five letter Saint names:

Adela
Alena
Faith
Helen
Kiara
Lydia
Maria/Marie
Maura

Good luck!

Meresal, I LOVE your nursery (especially the oars), and you still look great!

Charger and Lulu, you look fantastic!

HH, you don''t look fat - my body looked the same as yours during my first pregnancy - it took a long time that I was in that "is she or isn''t she" stage of pregnancy ...

Blushing, I am just so excited for you - how wonderful that you had a great US!

Good luck!

yes, they gave me mag. for my blood pressure. i was expecting it to be terrible because they said blurred vision and hot flashes, but it made me tired and out of it and hot. the awesome nurse brought me a fan that i kept on all throughout labor and man was it a lifesaver! i LOVED the fan.

i like isabelle or isabella, but my best friend''s first born is isabella. but thanks for the recommendations.

right now i think we''re torn between emily and vivian.

i actually liked pushing too because it felt like i could DO something finally. and apparently i was very good at it despite being able to feel nothing from top of uterus to toes. hahaa. but pushing was def very tiring! the 2 hours felt like forever and only a minute at the same time.

jcrow...re: names. don't stress out if none of your names feel like THE name. we had a few contenders and julian was my favorite but i have to say that for us the baby didn't look like ANY of the names we had in mind nor any we could come up with in the 1.5 days in the hospital. we went with julian dean and we love the name but i can't say that today he totally IS a julian dean YET, if that makes sense. for a while he's simply your baby! then you have other names for him too that have nothing to do with his name like we call him creature and fuss. hahaa. but as more and more time goes by and as we refer to him by his name to other people he is becoming more and more a real julian. so anyway i wouldn't stress about the name and finding the perfect one. you can always change it later too!!

ETA..Emily is actually my favorite girls name and if we had a girl that would have been my top contender. it is the #1 name i believe and has been for many years...BUT i don't know one Emily! i don't know about your regional area but sometimes i think really 'common' names are only as common as your area makes them.

that''s the thing. i loved emily and it was my top contender, but she was born i looked down and didn''t see her as an emily. and the rest of the names on our list don''t seem to fit her either. hubs really loves vivian now that''s she''s born but, i just a hang ups with the name for some reason and can''t say it''s 100% right either. emily fits so much of our crazy criteria, but it''s pretty generic and common, i think [even though i love the name]. and all the nurses and people said the same thing about the name emily, that for years it was ranked number one, but they don''t see the name that often at all despite many sites saying the name is number 3 in popularity.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all of the sticky dust and well wishes, but I guess my little guy had his own ideas. I went into labour at 2AM on friday, and at 6:28AM Miles Henry was born.

He weighed only 4.9 lbs, but is doing well, though he is currently still in the intensive care nursery. He has had trouble breathing a few times, which can happen with preemies, and he developed jaundice, but overall he is happy and healthy, we just need to get some weight on him. I am trying to breastfeed, so we are on an exhausting schedule of hospital to breastfeed, home to pump, then do whatever we need to do, rinse and repeat - on a three hour schedule. Last night we finally let them take over the 2 and 5 am feedings, so I only had to get up to pump, but otherwise was able to finally get some sleep in.

We don''t know when he will be able to come home, but hopefully it will be next week.

Either way, we love him to pieces and all the trouble is more than worth it.

Sorry I have no idea what is going on with anyone else, but I hope everyone is doing well.

Here is my little guy
30.gif

just catching up and wanted to send you a HUGE congrats! he''s quite beautiful!

our little one has a touch of jaundice too and because she was also [slightly] premature, we''re still at the hospital. we''re probably on the same exhausting feeding schedule, so i know what you''re going through. hope you are able get some rest!!

congrats again on such a beautiful little boy :]

I'm glad you didn't suffer much on the mag sulfate! Of my entire birth experience, I remember it as the worst part, by far.

Here's a website that shows you how popular names are by state: Baby Name Wizard NameMapper

I'm an Emily, and while I don't encounter it often in people my age, I do hear it a lot for baby girls. Maybe it's because you notice your own name more? I think that when you enter the world of play dates and preschool, you're better able to judge how popular a name is.

For instance, my son's name isn't uncommon, but it was #78 the year he was born ('09). Before he was born, we hadn't met any baby Henrys. We seem to see it a lot now, though. At the doctor's office early this week, the only other baby seen that morning was a Henry. At the grocery store the other day, the checkout woman's nephew, who's the same age as my baby, is also named Henry! Yesterday at the mall, a CS rep went on and on about her favorite professor's son- baby Henry! We've already got two baby Henrys here at PS, and I think puppmom is seriously considering it for her son. That's three in a little over a year in one forum with a small sample of 'mom posters' (given the size of PS).

If you haven't spent time on Nymbler with your husband yet, that might help. You can type Emily and Vivian into the Inspirations box and it should come up with similar choices that might fit baby jcrow better.
2.gif

(Both Emily and Vivian are good, classic choices if you decide on one, though. Putting popularity, or whatever bugs you about Vivian aside, they're beautiful names for girls that will 'age' well.)

I don''t have any updates about MP, but I did want to come over here and let you guys know that. I sent a text to her phone a while ago and I''ll let you know as soon as I get a response.

MP, congrats on baby Micah Ascher (great name)! it sounds like you had an ordeal, but I''m so glad that you finally are holding your sweet little boy. I hope that you''re feeling OK and recovering well.

Jcrow, I love the name Emily, congrats!

Meresal, it''s just you and me now for the rest of April - everyone''s getting impatient over here at my place except me - now that I''m 39 weeks, I just feel nervous - I wouldn''t mind going the full 40 weeks, and delivering next weekend or even the Monday after ... the docs told me that my due date is Fri. 4/16 from the start date of my last period, but I was charting my ovulation, and I know that I ovulated later than normal, so my due date is Mon. 4/19 according to my calculations ... we''ll see who''s right I guess ...

Congrats Aimee. Micah Ascher is a great name!!!!

Also for anyone interested or still shopping around... I had a really hard time choosing the 'one' stroller for us and I finally got the Bumbleride Indie. It really seems like it has everything we wanted but it also seems like it doesn't get very much press because I had not heard of it before Mandarine mentioned it. I posted the whole story and a pic in the 'Stuff' thread.

the Indie and have pretty much convinced DH that will be our stroller when we finally do have a bebe. The BOB just seems too big for NYC and our apt. Indie (for all walking/jogging/long trips)/volo (for subway travel) seems like the perfect combo for us. I don''t know why the Indie doesn''t get more press...
