Calling all the Pregnant PS''ers

MP - that just sounds awful from start to finish. I wonder if you''ve got some scoliosis that made the epidural so challenging? It''s rare for 3 people to have to struggle like that. Sounds like you ended up with a dural puncture or the catheter migrating into the spinal fluid with the first one, hence the high dense block and drop in your blood pressure. The other try must have been a combined spinal epidural, when you get a low dose of c/s drugs to take away the pan and then should stay comfy with the epidural catheter. Maybe you didn''t get a high enough initial dose? Maybe you''ve got some bands of tissue in the epidural space that prevent proper spread of the drugs, or maybe the catheter just wasn''t where they thought it was. At any rate, I''m so sorry (on behalf of anesthesiologists everywhere) that it was such a miserable experience from start to finish! (Note to everyone else: This is so not the norm!) Thankfully your son is here safely, and hopefully the headaches will finally be gone in the very near future.

MP~ I''m sorry your birth experience wasn''t as planned. I won''t say it was "awful" because the result is a blessing, but I don''t blame you for keeping Micah as an only child! I can''t believe they let you go that long before doing something. But, it''s over and Micah''s here and well so Congratulations!

I''m in the middle of my 3 hr test. Keep your fingers crossed please!

btw-I am famished. They should not make a pregnant woman go this long without food! lol

Thanks ladies, well after a LONG sleepless night, I''m wondering if I got a stomach flu bug. I have always had the symptoms similar to Allie, but last night was like none other. I broke my non-vomiting streak and made up for it by doing so every hour for the last 12 hrs. I''ve been able to keep water down for about an hour, which is a vast improvement from earlier this morning. For once I hope I did have the flu because there is no way I could do this for another month. I stayed home from work today, and I hope this doesn''t happen again because I have to save all my vacation I can for maternity leave!

MP--wow, that''s just a horrific experience (minus the beautiful baby part). I''ve heard of a few friends with residule pain from an epi, but never so much trouble with administering it. I hope you continue to get healthy and mobile. Thank goodness you got a beautiful boy out of that & a terrific DH!!! You are a tropper.

Split-shank--hoping you feel better and that it is indeed a bug and not something you have to cope with for weeks. Yuck!

Congrats MP and WOW I am sorry you had such a hard time with the labor and delivery. I am so glad you are doing well and it hopefully healing ok. At the end I had to get oxygen as well because the baby's heartrate was slowing, I hated it, it made me feel so dizzy and lightheaded which on top of the epi just sucked. And the IV drugs didn't work for me for longer than 10 minutes on my pitocin contrax either. While my L&D was definitely not that bad in the scheme of things, only child, hells yeah, i am on board with that.

BUTTT....Micah is sooo handsome and look at those huge eyes!! On a positive note at least he didn't come out with an extreme conehead like our J did from almost 2 hours of being in the birth canal lol! Take care of yourself and please post more pics!!

Congrats again MP! So sorry you had a horrible birth experience! What an ordeal! You are a trooper. I am glad you are feeling better and hope you have a speedy recovery.

OMG MP! That is one awful birth story, except the parts about the beautiful baby and great husband and you survived. Glad your naughty monkey came out healthy and hale in the end, heal fast!

Swimmer, yeah I don't bother with the HR monitor! I could probably swim at this point though it may require some unpleasant bathing attire shopping
40.gif
. That's actually a really good idea for going forward, what with summer coming up and this belly isn't going to be getting smaller. Where do you find a preggo swimsuit that's not all fluffy with extra fabric and is appropriate for actual motion through the water?

HH, thought I'd answer here to avoid further disturbing the newborn moms, but you can check out swaddling on wikipedia, has a long history and modern western use is typically for sleeping to provide comfort and keep the little wiggleworms from waking them selves with their strange and mobile body parts. My favorite wiki article highlights are this Bible quote: "Ezekiel 16:4 describes Israel as unswaddled, a metaphor for abandonment," and this pic of a Native American cradle board:

Cradleboard.jpg

MP, sweet good lord, so sorry to hear of your horrible experience.
23.gif
You are incredibly strong, and DH is a great man! Micah is a doll!

MP, Micah is worth it, but yikes! so glad you are feeling better and that A is a champ.

HH, yup, while smacking her gum and ringing up my clearance rack purchases she declared that I would need Pitocin.

Vesper, yeah, I'm a bit taller than you, but with an avg torso (till lately!) so my OB who is closer to 5'11" lmk that statistically taller ladies do go longer...that is statistically of course, not true across the board, esp looking at bitty MP when Micah was camped out in there or Meresal going early (I think she is tall too). Anyway, the avg gestation length for northern Europe is 42w3d and they are more our size than the avg American female who is 5'6" and an avg gestation of 41w 1d. So just some food for thought. There are so many other factors out there of course and I wonder what DrK (stilts herself) would have to say on it, but my OB has been telling me to settle in for 42 when we might start to talk about induction (which is of course my greatest fear). Anyway, hopefully you are in labor while I type this!

Splitshank and Allie, hope you are feeling better!

Cara, you are going to be horrified, for swim practice I either wear a 2 piece speedo from former lifeguarding days, or a workout suit that is so stretched out that it covers me sorta. Try Marshalls or TJMaxx, they have nike and speedo training suits for about $19 up to size 40. That is the biggest size they have, here are some clearance suits at swim outlet The generic brand stretches out quickly, but heck! you aren't going to be this size for long! All the maternity suits out there or "fitness" suits are too spendy to bother with. You don't want to invest, just to be comfy. I hope you find something, swimming is the only thing keeping me sane lately and that is a marginal "sane."

Cara, I LOVE that pic of the Indian baby. How adorable!

I''m crossing over from the Barely PG''ers, although my first post here is going to be a pity party. Just warning you.

I feel absolutely horrid. I have no doubt that his baby (aka evil embyro
emlove.gif
) is making a permanant home and making me very aware of it. I have not felt this sick in my entire life. I can''t ''snack'' anymore. Laying down is bad, sitting up is bad. I know I''m not the first, or the last woman on earth to have all day sickness, so I expect no sympathy. I am hoping that somehow typing this will distract my gag reflex into submission.

Crap. Didn''t work.

delurking in my almost 8 weeks state
2.gif
my all day sickness has been absolutely horrific, as well. Seriously debilitating. At first I was surviving on anti-emetics (love my zofran) but eventually that did not even make it tolerable. Fortunately, I am on OB this month and everyone is taking pity on me
12.gif
One of the Ob docs recommended the sea band accupressure things that you put on your wrists. I''ve had them on for about 24 hours now and they are totally saving my butt. I still don''t feel well, especially in the evening when my MS is always the worst, but the absolutely saved me at work today when I did not have a moment to sit, eat, drink, or pee from 6 am until 2 pm. You should definitely try them! They are making me almost feel human again. Though one of my patients did start vomiting during her c-section and I thought I was going to lose it
6.gif
yikes.

MP- wow, what a story! That sounds really unpleasant and bizarre! I put in epidurals for a living and have never heard of one just having no effect, despite being in the proper location. Those pitocin contractions are intense and no pain relief is..
14.gif
But it sounds like your little guy was worth all of the trouble! congrats!

MP, you''re a trooper! Your birth story was just incredible. But as you wrote, you now have a little bundle of joy. Best wishes to you, Antonio and Micah!

SS- I''m rooting for you, girl! hope that the test went well and that you got some food in your belly soon afterwards.

Split- Feel better soon. Rest, rest, rest is the way to go!

Vesper- Any new news? I''m thinking about you!

Icekid- Sorry about your MS, the ladies here always have great advice. I lucked out and didn''t experience any.

Cara- I just started reading a baby sleep book (don''t remember which one), and the history on swaddling is fascinating!

Swimmer- interesting about the avg gestation length for N. Europe vs the US.

Last night was #4 in our 6-week birthing class. The topic, "pain management during labor". WOW, so much to think about. DH and I are learning a ton, but wonder how much of it we''ll actually remember during the excitement of labor?? I need to start writing down questions to ask my OB at my next appt...

In other news, I found out that a former client is a budding photog and does mat/newborn shoots. I touched base with her and she has a "belly to baby" package that I may just commit to (i get friends and family pricing!) Was always on the fence about a mat shoot, but would feel so much more comfortable with someone I "know". Question for mamas who are reading- when did you schedule your pics? Trying to figure out good timing. THANKS!

lol cara that pic is priceless. swaddle BOARD...gee that sounds comfy!! i confess i don't know the history of swaddling but my mom said that it was popular with my generation but not so much with my sisters after me, i guess now it's back en vogue.

charger, i did my pics around 30 weeks. i was big enough to be obviously pregnant but not SO ginormous quite yet. i am so glad i didn't wait til later because from there on out it was a quick spiral downhill in 'cuteness' factor as the baby starts growing like mad. HAHA. i was really happy with the prints and i also had a friend 'budding' photographer do them for me. i was on the fence but i am so glad i did them and did them when i did.

random PSA also for mommies thinking about newborn photos. i was going to have my same friend do them but she was busy that month and you really should get them done within the first 2 weeks IF you want that super pliable, comatose sleepy looking newborn. they are much easier to pose and play around with in the first 2 weeks. i went with a friend's recommend and the time she spent really showed me that it was worth paying someone who understands newborns. just how long it can take for the baby to get in the right position, or who knows you need to feed maybe once or twice during the session or if the baby is fussy how to help soothe. that the kid will probably pee and maybe poop on you and them and their props, etc. he was so fussy since i got the photos done during week 3 she had to come back the following week and the entire shoot was about 7 hours total split up into two days. so i am glad i didn't have my friend do them, we both would have been way out of our league considering i was just learning how to soothe J, and she doesn't spend any time around kids. anyway..just something to think about that i never would have considered! newborn photos are not like adults, you can't just tell them to pose and smile. hehe.

Hey Charger, I''m still here - I''ve had the odd set of contractions here and there, but once I sit down or something they stop, so no real progress yet
20.gif
My induction date is set for a week from today, so I know that at the very latest that''s when I''ll have the baby. I am hoping for sooner though!

I never did pro-shots with Andrew until the 3 month photo, but I think that''s a great idea, and I love the pro belly bump pics too. You should totally do it. I wanted to have the hospital photographer take pics, but DS was born on Thanksgiving weekend, so they didn''t have anyone. This time I''m delivering at a different hospital, and I was told that a baby photographer is there every day, so we''ll do a pic at the hospital probably the day after he''s born.

Icekid, I''m sorry to hear about your morning sickness. I have heard that those pressure point bands really work for some - that''s great that you''re finally finding some relief.

HH, can''t wait to hear the gender or your baby tomorrow!

Hello Everyone,
My apologies for not being able to keep up with the pace of this thread.. I read daily, but our toddler would much rather do "art time" and "reading time" than play by herself so much I my "me" time is consumed by "us" time - which I wouldn''t trade for the world.

MP- Wow, what a story... I''m sorry to hear about all of your difficulties/problems. It is a miracle that little Micah is just perfect through all of that stress and A+ for Antonio steppin it up to the top rung of the ladder!! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

HH- Team Pink or Blue?

Swimmer- Wow, people are unique.... good thing you have a sense of humor, I probably wouldn''t have been able to bite my tongue if I was having an "off day"

Lindsey- I am fairly new to the forum so unfortunately am unfamilier with your story, but am very happy to hear everything is going very well with Andrew and wish you the best in your last few weeks... so close after such a long journey

IceKid- Sorry to hear about all of your morning sickness, unfortunately I do not have any good advise for you as "knock on wood" I have had no eating issues with either of my pregnancies... I dont know what I would do as I love food.. I would definately be losing pounds instead of gaining!

Vesper- Get on that Ball while mixing up a bowl of confetti cupcakes.... tell the LO that the cupcakes are their birthday present..! haha

Charger- I have been on the fence about the maternity shots as well.... I just am not comfortable in this prego body and dont know if I want to be reminded of it later... I absolutely love all the shots (especially the ones with siblings which I would have) - Guess I should figure out ya or no soon.... I have a feeling they would get pretty pricey and I gotta get M''s 3 yr old pics done yet..

SS- Hope the 3 hr comes back good, keep us posted!

Thanks Cara, as stated in that thread. I am fully aware of what swaddling is, the history and how to do it. That was never the issue. I was questioning the specific technique described in that thread, which directly related to the use of the miracle blanket. Honestly, I know you mean well but, I really don''t appreciate being schooled elsewhere on PS, ''cause you know, the fact that people see me as a flamingly bitchy and judgmental moron has already been slammed into me repeatedly this week.

HH :) did you find out yesterday or are you going today? I can''t wait to hear what you have in there!

Busy beaver this week but I just wanted to pop in and say good luck to HH! I can''t wait to hear if you''re having a boy or a girl!

I vote boy!

Cara-

Hi! I am happy to see you are hanging strong with your pregnancy. You had such great words to say to me at one time (thank you). I have to ask, does the worried feeling ever go away?

monkeypie - what a yucky experience.

glad that it''s all over and little micah is in your arms!

i did my maternity pics at 36 weeks. we took them the friday before i was induced

. i know i looked like a whale, but it is what it is.

we did newborn pics too when emily was 7 days old. you''re right about working with someone who knows newborns. when we scheduled them, it wasn''t time for emily to eat, but sure enough, when the photographer showed up ready to shoot, emily wanted to be nursed right then and there. thankfully the photographer was cool + understanding.

HH, how can I get work done when waiting to find out about your baby? gah!
come post please girl!

Seriously! What time is your freaking appointment?!?! I''m dying over here!

Voting BOY for Hudson.

HH~ You know, I logged on JUST to see what you''re having!! And, you''re no where to be found!! Egads! I''m in the girl camp btw!

Passed the 3 hr glucose!! Thanks for the support while I was losing my mind a bit over the last couple days! I still get cookies!

Luvinlife, thanks for your kind words! I''m not particularly worried about losing this pregnancy now, though of course it will be nice to see the LO on the screen next week again. Actually I''ve been pretty good about not worrying, but not as good about actually believing and being able to get excited for the child coming. Logically I know that I am pregnant and there is this little proto-child growing inside me, but still the brain is slow to really believe it so I am more focusing on details like... what are we going to do with a *child* come fall?
3.gif
We don''t know much about babies! And what are we going to *call* it since we don''t have names we are thrilled with? Child needs a name. Where will we put the child since we haven''t started the nursery yet? How will we ever afford college for this little munchkin, especially since daycare will cost more than our rent? You know, typical parent-to-be worries
2.gif

Cara

YEAHHHHH!!!!!. I am happy to hear that! It must be comforting to have a shift in thoughts
emsmile.gif
. Now let's work on getting this little a name!!!
PS: When can you put him or her to work to chip in for their part of the rent
9.gif
?

Shiny, I''m so glad that you passed your 3 hour test - I had a feeling that you would!

HH, I can''t wait to hear your gender news!

So, obviously, I''m still here
14.gif
At least I know that the waiting will be over in less than a week (I get induced next Wed. at the latest) but hopefully something will happen any day now ...

We are all getting really restless here waiting - but no one more than my 3 year old, Andrew. Last night he cuddled up to my belly, then started YELLING at it: "Baby, get out of there RIGHT NOW! I"M NOT KIDDING!!!" Maybe the baby''s too scared to come out now
emsmileo.gif

I do have some good news though - as of last Sunday, Andrew is officially potty-trained! We''ve been accident-free all week. I''m still putting Pull-Ups on him overnight just in case, so I don''t have to deal with wet sheets, and I realize there may be some regressing after the baby comes, but it''s still great to know that I won''t be dealing with 2 kids in diapers all the time now.

DH said, "Great, after 3 and a half years of diapers, we get a one week break, then it''s right back to diapers for another 3 years."
20.gif
Still, better some break than none ...

Still waiting for your big news HH!

But in the mean time can we please talk blood pressure?

My pre-pregnancy blood pressure was somewhere in the 90/60 range a little higher sometimes.
As soon as I got pregnant, really starting at 7 weeks my blood pressure has been 130/80 consistently from machine to machine, from doctor to doctor. I AM TERRIFIED. My MW doesn''t seem to be too concerned. She said it if goes higher than 140/90 (either of the numbers) she will send me in for further testing. I am going to try to cut out salt to see if that makes a difference but I just wanted to see what kinds of experiences you guys had with BP and whether it led to Pre-E.

Allie, same thing happened to me. I frequented CVS to check it after they told me it was 130/80.
2.gif
Mine went back down into my normal range at 18 weeks and has been there since.
