I was about to write something very similar !
It seems obvious that VC introduced an uncommon version of the common V-prong usually holding the tips of pears. The V-tip tries to make itself dissapear from view, by having slight, narrow V branches extending somewhat further upward along the girdle (AOP variant); the VC v-notched balls are simply trying to be cutely rounded & natural extensions of the shank ... which does appear in profile, but not in top-down view.
I'd vote for smaller V-notched balls - i.e. a refinement of the VC design, rather than defaulting on the common V-tip ... which never looked subtle to me. [on bullets - yes ... since the V's arms are a natural parallel to the V-shaped tip of the stones, & a natural end-point at the corners where these facets end, while the pear's contour offers no such features]
