I had a great, although busy weekend.

We stayed at the Sheraton Towers. It couldn't be in a better location, there is so much within walking distance. Michigan Ave., Mellenium Park, Navy Pier, and scads of resturants. You pay for that local though....

We arrived around 12:30 Thursday and dropped the luggage off at the hotel. Grabbed a bite to eat in the NBC buiding across the street and walked back to the hotel to find the rest of the family arriving. Of course, we had to go to the hotel bar and celebrate, although I really wanted a nap. I was up at 3:30 that morning and was rather tired. Of course saying I wanted a nap was not acceptable. So we chatted and drank for a bit. Then got cleaned up and headed to Dicks Last resort, a bar/resturant.

On the walk there, we had to pass the crowd gathered at the building across the street, where a premiere for Oceans 13 was being held. Unfortunately we didn't get to see George Clooney or whoever else was there through the wall of people, but we could tell every time a celebrity got out as everyone would go nuts. Pretty funny.

Dicks food wasn't that great, except for hubby's ribs, they were very good. Casual atmosphere, with the waiters doing a take off on Ed Debivics, with a touch of sarcasm in their dialogue. I had fun with our waiter, and he with me.
11.gif
(I'm sure it helps when you've had a few beers)
9.gif
We closed up shop around 8:30 as everyone was tired.

The next morning I met Dee at 9:00. I spotted her right away, as she really does look like her pics (only she's even prettier in person), but if I hadn't known, her shirt would have clued me in. Pic to follow.
9.gif
We grabbed breakfast first and then hit the pavement.

I can't even remember all the names of the shops, or where exactly I saw what, but we made the rounds, starting with Cartier I believe. What stands out most in there was the brownish pink pear ring for a million doallars.
23.gif
Maybe Dee can remember how big it was. It was absolutely stunning, and it looked pretty good on my hand.
11.gif
(FG, I immediately thought of you!) They were very nice and very willing to let us try stuff on. In fact, they offered anything we showed a real interest in, we didn't even have to ask to try anything on.

We saw gorgous radiants, with one that stands out in particular but I don't remember where (maybe Dee does), a STUNNING emerald cut (which totally reinforced that fancies HAVE to be seen, as we saw emerald cuts before this that didn't come close to comparing), many yellow diamonds (more Radiants), blue diamonds, and so many other gorgeous pieces, I couldn't name them all. We went in Tiffany's and they were very nice. I wanted to try on a heart diamond ring, which they were quite willing to let me try on, but they would have had to get a guard to come over and because I knew I wasn't even remotely serious about buying it I said nevermind. I tried on a ring in BVLGARI that was very "me", in that it was just a simple, very wide flat band that came right up to the edge of a good sized round. Were it not for the fact that it was a horrible looking stone, it would have been stunning.
38.gif

Graff was phenominal, and intimidated me the most. I didn't ask to try anything on there. It's not that they wouldn't have let me, I just had a very different feeling in there. SO many beautiful things, and their displays were so simple yet so elegant. They showcased everything so beautifully.
30.gif

Then we hit jewelers row, more beauties to be seen. I spotted a ring that looked perfect on Dee, I'll let her tell you about it if she wants to. Then we had lunch at a great place, talked a bit, and then grabbed a cab back to her house and me on to the hotel. I had a great time, I just wished I had felt a little more chipper. Thanks again Dee!

We also didn't take any pics. To be honest, once we got going, I totally forgot about it, but as Dee said, the high end stores wouldn't allow it anyway, and I would have felt weird taking some if they had.

I'll continue the rest in the next post. The following pic is Miss Dee in the shirt she bought just for the occassion.

Goody gum drops - I was hoping for a thread on your GTG!!

What a fun time I had on Friday!

I wanted Ellen to be able to recognize me easily so I thought I would dress appropriately.
9.gif
(I don't know why my face is all scrunched up in that photo--I must have been squinting toward the sun.) Funny thing, I walked over to Ellen's hotel from my house and so many people either smiled and waved at me or actaully said, "Great shirt." It was a little odd... I did bring something else to change into once we met up though! (And for those of you who think we're strange/crazy, there is a running joke about Ellen's family being worried about her meeting up with some stranger from the internet because I might be an axe murderer.)

As for the size of the pink pear at Cartier, I think the offical carat weight is BIG, LOL. It did look great on Ellen's hand though! And I'm in love with the diamond rolling rings now. Hmmm... birthday coming up soon...

The yellow diamond was a very fun ring, and I might have to go back and visit it again, but I'm still on the fence about how much I would actually wear it.

And the service we were offered in every store was very very good. As a matter of fact I was afraid the woman at Bulgari was going to come home with us if we didn't get out of there soon!

It's great to be able to browse the bling with someone else who appreciates it. There are very few people I can drag from store to store who don't beg for mercy after a while, but Ellen is a total trooper!

There was one small disappointment though... The place where we went for lunch has THE BEST diamond lighting EVER. But the main dining room as closed for a private party that day and we had to eat in the lounge. Oh well, next time.

And Harry Winston is coming to Chicago in the fall. He's opening a store on Oak Street, so Ellen definitely has to come back for that!

ETA: Ellen, the salesperson from Van Cleef just sent me an e-mail to thank us for stopping in on Friday. Isn't that sweet!

Ellen,

My hero, you made it into Graff! Now do you see why I''m afraid to step foot in the place? We''re going to Chicago in a few weeks to celebrate DH''s b-day...maybe just maybe I''ll get up the nerve.

Sounds like you had an amazing time! So glad. We have a Dick''s in San Diego that I''ve never gone to as DH isn''t into the food...you''ve seconded the notion, so now I really have no interest.

Hope the wedding was lovely!

~K

P.S. Love the shirt, DeeJay. Too funny.

P.P.S. More pics???

After shopping I was pooped, so I laid down for just a bit. Got a second wind, dressed for dinner and me, hubby and son hit Michigan Ave. again for some "realistic" shopping.
9.gif

Ended up not seeing anything we wanted, so headed to Giordina''s for pizza. There was a 45+ minute wait and son was starving, so we headed on to the Grand Lux Cafe. I really expected a great wait there too, but was relieved to hear only 10 minutes. Located on the corner, wonderful decor, with the eating part located on the second floor. The room we were in had nothing but huge tall windows facing the street, which had electric shades that were lifted once the sun went down enough. Awesome views, with trees near the windows, and skyscrapers in the distance.

Our waiter was just phenominal. Very friendly, very informative on our choices, pointing out that some entrees were big enough to split, leaving room for the fantastic sounding desserts, which I fully intended to indulge in and I NEVER eat dessert out, as I''m not that big a sweet eater and always too full anyway. So hubby and I split their lasagna. It had 3 different types of mushrooms, spinach, creme sauce, chicken and cheese. Outstanding, and definitely enough for us both. Son had a hamburger. I know, all this great food and he wanted a burger. lol Hubby finished it up his last couple bites though (it was huge), and said it was probably the best burger he''s ever had. Came with bacon, mushrooms, onions and cheese.

On to desserts. There were SO many great choices, and I was torn between Key Lime pie and "The Best" carrot cake. The cake won, and yes, it''s the best I''ve ever had, and I''ve had a lot of really good ones. It was also HUGE. I only managed to eat the botton layer, leaving 2 for later.
11.gif

Son had Oreo cheesecake (which he loved but I didn''t try), and hubby had a White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle cheescake (which I tasted, devine). Large portions also, with great presentation. Prices were not bad either, at 8-25 dollars. All in all, an outstanding dinner and experience, which I would highly recommend!

More to follow...

Ohhh, LOL at that Axe Murderer tee shirt!!! Deejay, you silly thing!
9.gif

Glad you ladies had a good time downtown, thanks for sharing the details of your experience.

Ellen, DeeJay,
I'm glad you had a great time. That T-shirt!

Kimberly,
I'll take you to Graff the next time you're in NY. No fear!

P.S. Darn you, Ellen -- now I want some cheesecake.

HI:

YOu are adorable DJ--you look like you are 20 years old!!! This t-shirt thingie is funny--it is exactly what Heather''s (hmlr) husband said about me (being an axe murdered from the iNternet), when she was meeting me for the first time last year while on holiday in my home city. Common thought!!! Bet your axe would hae set off the security alarms in those fancy stores......

Sounds like you two had a great time. Love the t-shirt. Don''t think many axe murderers would announce it to the world like that.

Sounds like a fun time! Regarding Graff, I went into Graff at the Wynn Casino in Vegas last year. At the time there were a lot of people oogling the window displays but nobody would go in. I said, "forget that, I''m going in!" and they were the nicest people ever. I tried on some asschers and it was there that I started realizing that the asscher size that would look good on my finger would put us in the poor house
20.gif
. But they''re very nice and let you try on anything as well. In fact, I seem to remember them offering me to try on some ridiculous piece but I declined since there was no way I''d ever be able to seriously afford it. But they offered. I think salespeople in shops like that are happy to let people look, especially when you can "talk the talk" with them. Imagine how bored you''d be with people looking in the window all day long but nobody coming into the store?

The wedding day was looooooong.

Grabbed a late breakfast (10:30ish) with a bunch of the family at the same place Dee and I ate. I had the Blue Bayou, which is scrambled eggs with blue cheese, bacon and tomatoe. Yummy.

Then we hit the Ave. again for a bit, then headed back to the room to get ready, as we had to load the shuttle (not sure what happened to the trolley) at 2:15. Service started at 3 and lasted til 4:30. It was held in Saint Mary Of the Angels Church, which is the most beautiful church I''ve ever seen. Very ornate, just awesome, which of course made for a beautiful ceremony.

The brides dress was stunning. Ivory satin, strappless and fitted to the lower waist, where it flowed out smooth in front, and had gathered layers in the back. She wore a cathredral length veil of ivory with lace detail toward the end, really pretty. She''s about as big around as my pinkie, so she wore it perfectly.

Then we went back to the hotel for a half an hour, then went on to the Cultural Art Center for the reception. We were served drinks and appetizers in one room until after 7.
23.gif
Standing only, no seats. THANK GOD I had decided before the trip to return the uncomfortable shoes.

We were finally brought into the main room, where the grooms brother/best man gave a speech (rather lengthy), and then the brides MOH gave one (again, lengthy), and then the brides father spoke (very lengthy). We finally ate somewhere after 9. Yes. As one can imagine, we were rather hungry, as we hadn''t really eaten since late morning.

Dinner was a small salad of baby greens with papaya slices and dried apricot, roasted pistachios, feta cheese with an Apricot vinagrette. Main course was sliced tenderloin of beef and pancetta-wrapped halibut, crayfish (1), thyme browne butter leek and gruyere mashed potatoes, sugar snap peas with red pepper diamonds. Everything was a very small portion. Then cake and an assortment of different desserts. I had creme brulee.

I hate to complain about ANYTHING, but for future brides reading this, please, if you''re going to have guests go this many hours without eating, give a healthy portion.
2.gif
Honestly, the dinner was like an appetizer for the guys. It really wasn''t even enough for me. But we made do.

The reception was to end at midnight, but we were so tired, we grabbed a cab shortly after 11. It was a lovely day, just incredibly long.

And as always, it''s great to be home.

I had the exact same experience at the Wynn Graff, as well as the Beverly Hills Graff. It''s so much fun to play.

uhhh...you guys hang out and go diamond browsing and don''t post pics of some of those baubbles!!?!?????
23.gif
we''re all so happy you had a grat time with diamond **** browsing, but PLEASE SHOW US PICS!!!
9.gif

DJ you look so cute woman and so small!! kudos on all your progress and love the shirt.

Ellen your trip sounds like fun...funny about the wedding portions. i actually prefer smaller portions at events like that or else i will end up eating too much typically!! i also pack little granola bars in my purse for us when we go to events like this because you really don''t know ahead of time what the schedule is going to be like and sometimes the app tray passes you up 5-6x and then you are starving for 1-2 hours while they take their pictures etc...so maybe a tip for the future!! welcome home!

OMG a brownish pink pear ring for a cool million?! I would have l

ved to see that Ellen!!!

Your trip sounds like a blast! Too bad the wedding dinner was so small - it sounded delish. Maybe if they had given everyone 2 plates.
2.gif

Dee you look adorable - that shirt cracks me up!

Forgot to add, my fears about my dress were for nothing. I got MANY compliments on it, and even though I didn't wear the shoes I really wanted, they did go well with it.
36.gif

Kimberly, lol! It was no problem going IN Graff's, just asking to try stuff on.
9.gif
Maybe if I went again I would, now that I've got my feet wet.
11.gif
You MUST go in, it's SO worth it.
2.gif

Harriet, I'm sorry. Go have some for lunch somewhere.
25.gif
9.gif

Lorelei, I seriously thought of you while eating that carrot cake.
2.gif
And I tried to eat some after the wedding, but it was so rich, I only had a few bites and gave the rest to hubby, who promptly finished it off.
11.gif

Sharon, my SIL was supposed to go with us. But at the last minute she begged off in a roundabout way. I think her hubby thought Dee was an axe murderer too. To make a long story short, we ran into them at breakfast, so they saw her in person, but I guess that wasn't enough. She did say later she wished she'd gone with us.

surfgirl, Graff wasn't unapproachable, but they didn't offer readily like some other places did. Had they, I might have tried something on....It was just "different" in this one, for me anyway. Of course Dee was like on a first name basis with practically every place we went.
9.gif

Mara, trust me, you would not have been stuffed had they served more. Not even close.
2.gif
But yes, NEXT time, I will pack something in reserve.

And sorry, I guess I should have explained Dee's shirt, I was just assuming everyone knew the history behind it. I cracked up, it was so appropriate.
9.gif

And yes, we moved you to get a better picture of the shirt and the sun might have been in your eyes.

Wow, how nice to have gotten an email from Van Cleef!!

It sounds like you had a great GTG and a great trip Ellen! I wish I could have met up with you two. I''ve eaten at the Cafe Lux also and I thought it was very good and very reasonable! I hope you have more pics of your GTG. The shirt is SOOO funny Dee!!!

What a fun trip and get together!! I love that shirt - hahaha and yes, it does bring back memories of when I met Sharon!! LOLOL

BTW Dee, you look wonderful! Ellen, where''s a picture of you????

Harriet, good grief, you HAVE to have some really good carrot cake with cream cheese icing. It's to die for.

surfgirl, I forgot to say, your av is STUNNING!!

gail, there aren't any pics. As I said, I really forgot about taking any, but most stores wouldn't have let us anyway. And I can't post pics of me, per hubby's request.
2.gif

DeeJay, I meant to tell you, I wore the white linen skirt I bought before the trip to dinner Friday night, and you'll be happy to know it was somewhat wrinkled upon leaving the resturant.

(inside joke)

Ellen, your trip sounds like so much fun. I just love going to chicago. it''s my hubby''s hometown and we go often and yet there is still a ton of things we haven''t seen or done. Of course nothing beats Deejay''s blingfest tour and it sounds like you weren''t disappointed either. I know it must be nice to be home after such a whirlwind weekend.

deejay, love the shirt and girl you are looking fantastic..kudos on the weight loss!!!

Your trip sounds like it was such a fun time - I''m so jealous. I love when PSers get together - meeting other people who can commisserate with us in our love for diamonds.

Ellen, I don''t belive for one second that your shirt wrinkled AT ALL because it was still fresh as a daisy on Friday even after I had dragged you all over town! And I''m sorry you had to wait until so late in the evening after the wedding on Saturday to get not enough food. That always irks me.

Thanks all for the comments about the shirt BTW. It''s amazing what you can find on the internet! I had to tuck the shirt in (it literally comes about to my knees!) and blouse it out on top to get it look even half way normal. I swear I''m a lot smaller under all that material than it looks, LOL. Now the question is what to do with this particular piece of clothing... hmmm... maybe wear it to the next PS gem show GTG.
9.gif

mrss, yes, so much to see! We will definitely be back.

Dee, not "the shirt", a skirt.
2.gif
Although I did hang up the shirt and wear it again Sat. morning without ironing it.
25.gif
9.gif

And yes, Dee is quite slim under all that shirt.
28.gif

Something else I noticed while jewelry shopping, is the compliments the staff would give us on our rings. I''ve taken my round to two different jewelers here and neither batted an eye at it. Just found it interesting...

Oh, SKIRT, not SHIRT. Oops!!!

Dee, that T shirt is a riot!!! You look awesome woman!!

Ellen, so glad to hear you had a wonderful trip!!!
