Because of time and budget constraints I decided to do my own make-up on my wedding day. I''ve been practicing and I''m getting pretty good!

Except I can''t get quite hide the pimples if I get break-outs, and if I get one of those on my wedding day...

Any tips? Maybe I just need to change my foundation... Do you ladies know anything that could give me the extra coverage I need without making my skin break out more (or break the bank...)?

Thanks!

Hi Date-Twin! I''m DIYing my own make-up also! I''ve been practicing lately, and I''ve found that the combination of a make-up primer (such as Laura Mercier or Smashbox) works really well with a long lasting, build-able coverage foundation.

My favorite foundation is Estee Lauder''s foundation - I''m not sure of the exact name, but it lasts for "15 hours" and it''s GREAT coverage - and I have an oily skin type...

Use a green cover stick... or anything green really. They actually work in neutralizing the red color.

You have a while until your wedding right? Do you get stress related pimples? Hormonal acne? I just have had hormonal pimples that I can totally keep under control with a birth conrtol pill and stress pimples which I can clear up if I use something with glycolic acid in it.

I don''t mean to be presumtious. I just know how hard it was to have to cover them up.

I''m also not great at covering them up - but my one tip would be (and this is gross) - make sure you don''t pick them!! I find that pimples that are still kind of smooth etc cover up so much better than ones that are kind of crusty etc.

Granted, that is a tip that should be for everyday for all of us, but I know the temptation thinking it will go away sooner that way.

Also, they say to put the cover up kind of around the pimple and gentley cover it up by moving the makeup over it - that didn''t make sense - um...kind of build it up from the outside in. haha and I have an english degree!

Sorry - it''s hard to describe! Anyways - drink water and try to stay calm and hopefully you won''t get any!! Either way, trust me when I say you will be the only one who notices. Everyone else will just notice how radiant and beautiful you look!!!

The best cover-up in the world is Max Factor Panstik.

My grandmother, mother and I all swear by the stuff - it''s also great as foundation.

Can your doctor or dermatologist give you any help at all? I found that the BCP Yasmin made my skin really good.

Otherwise, if they have it over there ''Freederm'' works quite well and is kind to your skin.

Although budget is an issue- could you possibly afford a facial a week or so before your wedding? You''d want to find someone very skilled- probably an esthetician that will do extractions- but it would give you a really nice glow and minimize your chances of getting a breakout near your wedding. Sometimes dermatologist offices will do clinical facials. Of course, you won''t get the relaxing elements there.

The other thing that you can do it go to a solid makeup counter (I suggest MAC, since all of their artisits are specially trained and their makeup is made for stage/pictures) and ask for a consultation. While you would be "expected" to buy a few things, it would be worth the expertise AND the tips on application.

Good luck!!!!

Anchor, it''s really important to NOT pick or pop a pimple.

Lots of brides will get the "stress" zit, and while it''s tempting to pop that sucker...it is nearly impossible to cover a scabbed over pimple and make it look natural.

Purchasing a good green concealor will help if you find yourself with a red pimple. But it is equally important to remember less is more when using a color.

DO NOT get a facial!!! Whatever you do! Facials clean out your pours by bring the dirt, oil and grim to the surface of your skin...often times this can result in break outs. If you''re considering a facial, put yourself on a schedule so you can overcome any break outs well in advance.

I have 3½ months left until my wedding, so it''s not that much time to get the breaking out under control. I stopped taking the BCP in December because of side effects and the acne came back. I went to see a doctor last week and she put me on antibiotic as well as a topical cream to put on every night; hopefully that will help. Meanwhile, if I get a bad zit at least I''ll have some tips to cover it up!

Thanks. Picking at pimples is really gross, but it''s hard to resist; you just want to get that stuff out of your skin! I think I understand what you''re trying to say, I''ll give it a try. Thank you for the kind words! My mother told me that also.

I am planning on going for a make-up consultation with my mom and sister since we''re all DIY-ing and none of us are big makeup wearers. Thanks for the suggestion! I''m also thinking about a facial, but I''m not sure how long in advance I will go.

I use Physicians formula .. this even gives you directions on how to use it. Its got good coverage. Cover stuff...

I have a separate foundation brush that I use and lightly tap the concealer to the right coverage. :)
Thanks SDL!

Not sure if this works, but it''s in my Anti-Bride Wedding Planner:
"Blemish-Busting Mask: Mix 1/2 teaspoon tumeric with just enough water to form a paste. Apply to blenishes. Leave overnight"

There are also overnight pimple zappers like Bliss Change Your Spots.

I''ve heard Visine takes the redness of pimples away?

I just got Benefit Erase Paste... it''s for camouflaging and brightening. I use it under my eyes, and I''m pretty pleased with it. I''m sure it would work well for pimples. I was using Bare Escentuals Multi-Tasking Face, which worked well for circles/imperfections.

I''m doing my own make-up as well. If you need suggestions for a shadow or shadow base that will last through the day, let me know because I''ve tried a lot (I''m doing my own make-up as well) and have a good list of the ones that are crease-resistant, water-resistant, and a shadow base that will make any shadow stick like glue all day.

Hi sera! I''d love to hear any makeup suggestions you have! Thanks for the masks and zit-zappers, too.

Liquif-Eye It transforms any shadow into a liner. You lightly rub the felt tip applicator on the shadow and then draw your line. It gives a very straight line.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion I love this stuff! It''s a light, creamy, shadow base that you put on with a sponge tip applicator. It doesn''t change the color of the shadow at all. This stuff will STAY on like nothing else! It''s amazing. I can''t even get it off with plain water- gotta use make-up remover. As tough as this stuff is, it''s gentle on my eyes and I''m super-sensitive. The shadow won''t crease or rub off. What''s so great is that you don''t have to search for long-lasting shadow, you just turn whatever shadow you have into long-lasting.

Benefit Creaseless Shadow/Liner This stuff is gorgeous! It''s blendable and layer-able... so you can go subtle or dramatic. They are shimmery without being too glittery. It truly is creaseless and it does stay on all day. Though, in the color Tattle Tale, I have found it to come off a bit. R.S.V.P. is a great bridal color because it''s a subtle beige that is very flattering. I have Pre-Nup (also nice flattering bridal color) which is a bit more pink and deeper than R.S.V.P. I use Skinny Jeans as a liner... it can be a soft, smokey greyish or a more dramatic soft black. A truer black is Towne Car... which can actually go on very sheer or you build the color to get a deeper line. You can use a brush or your finger... blends well, dries quick... practically foolproof.

MAC Liquilast This stuff does last... and the colors are gorgeous. The brush is not super stiff so you (at least I) need to be more careful in getting a super straight line. The colors are mostly dramatic... I do have a burgundy-ish looking one that is more subtle.

MAC Fluidline This is a creamy gel liner... goes on softer than Liquilast and if using the small angled brush, the line is very precise but can be softened.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil
This eyeliner does glide on very softly... it also stays on. The color is really high pigmented. I have Rockstar (black), Lust (deeper purple than appears on the pic) and Bourbon (glimmering dark brown). The colors (as well as in their Deluxe Eyeshadows) focus more on vibrant than bridal-y colors... but there are a couple and the color does last.

As for powder/foundation... Bare Escentuals lasts all day on me, though I know others haven''t had it last all day on them. Same with my blush, though I do have NARS Multiple (for eyes, cheeks and lips) coming from Sephora.

Lipstick... I haven''t found a long-lasting one that is truly long-lasting. Some last longer than others, but I end up having to touch up them all, so I just go with a moisturizing one that isn''t sticky.

Also gotta ditto about the primer! I like Smashbox, Bare Escentuals and Dr. Brandt Pores No More.

Anchor, if you don''t mind me asking, what kind of topical cream did your doctor prescribe? I use clindamycin and it probably made the difference between having crazy zits on my wedding day and not. Also, this isn''t necessairly make up related, but I''d recommend definitely having a good solid routine of washing your face, using your moisturizers, etc. and don''t skip it, even when the wedding planning gets stressful on the days leading up to your big day. I''m a cosmetics addict and I brought all of my "products" with me to our wedding (it was a destination wedding), because I wanted to make sure I did everything there like I did at home!

If you DO get a facial, get it several days in advance, so any splottichness that may occur has time to wear away. I don''t know how sensitive your skin is, but any poking and prodding on my face needs a few days to recover!

I don''t know what topical you''re on either, and I may have already recommended this to you, but I used Retin-A Micro and it cleared my skin up immediately! I stopped using it before I went to Costa Rica because it can make you sensitive to sun, and my skin is actually still great, and that was about a month ago. So if that''s not what you''re on, maybe you can get on it.

For covering up zits, I agree with everyone else who recommended not picking them. As for make up, be careful with the green cover up because it can look really, really green on your skin.

I think your best bet is to go to a couple of make up counters and see who does the best job on you and learn how they did it. I''m not a big make up wearer either, and once I went to Sephora once to get a new under eye concealer and the guy did such a terrible job, I ended up not getting anything. So I would recommend trying a few different places out.

P.S. My science professor told our class that eating/drinking a lot of acidic things (orange juice, Coke, tomatoes, etc.) can cause break outs because it actually changes your body''s Ph levels, so maybe try to keep that in mind a few weeks before your wedding.

Wow, I''m definitely saving this list! Thank you for all the great tips. Foundation primer and eyeshadow primer is definitely on my list.

My doctor prescribed the Differin gel. It worked for me when I was a teenager, before I got on the BCP, so hopefully it will work again. I am working on a good skin care routine. I wash my face morning and night with a gentle foaming cleanser, moisturizing in the morning and putting on Differin at night. So far my skin hasn''t shown signs of irritation, but the breaking out has yet to stop. It''s been just a week since I''ve been to the doctor, so I''ll have to give it more time.

Now that is interesting! Makes a lot of sense. I''ll keep that in mind!

Clinique Advanced Concealer - double check and say you want the THICK one. I think it's about $10-15. It's literally the thickest concealer out there and the stuff is absolute magic. To this day, my friends in HS still think I had perfect skin - yeah, not so much! For red blemishes, I second using a green concealer (physicians formula from walgreens works just fine) and then using this Clinique one on top. You just dab a tiny bit on your finger on the spot and it will cover.

And in terms of getting rid of zits before your wedding (which, btw - the scene in My Big Fat Greek Wedding is sooo real life - both DH and I got new ones when we woke up on our wedding day!) - anything with a really high amt of benzoyl peroxide (don't put this stuff on before going to bed though, you'll likely discolor your sheets!). I use Clinique acne solutions emergency gel-lotion and they usually go away after a day or two. Don't pop any of those bad boys!

If you have a bunch of blemishes-to-be that you can feel under your skin, I would recommend a facial, but do it now to see how you react and then figure out how far in advance you'd need to do one before the wedding. OR - try an at home facial- I'm sure there are a bunch of directions online and it's probably pretty cheap to do. I break out like crazy for a week after a facial, and then my skin is blemish free for awhile. My mom NEVER breaks out after a facial, so she'll have them one or two days before a big event.

HTH! Really - if nothing else, try out the clinique advanced concealer. It's liquid gold.

krisvrn - I''m Canadian and we don''t have those stores here. However our Sears and the Bay stores do have high-end cosmetic counters - Clinique, Estée Lauder, Dior and the like.

Anchor, I don''t know if you''re up for changing your skin care routine, but I''ll tell you what worked for me. I was using acne cleansers plus a topical and would still breakout really bad. Then I changed to using Cetaphil cleanser, an astringent for sensitive skin, plus Neutrogena''s 2.5% benzoyl peroxide topical, THEN Cetaphil''s moisturizer 2x a day. And poof! I only get a couple small things now and then (usually PMS related).

I use Physician''s Formula makeup too for sensitive skin, I swear it makes a difference! If you use that up to the wedding, then you can just pile everything else on for the day, right?
2.gif

Here''s the site for the Cetaphil thing: http://www.acne.org/regimen.html Good stuff!

This routine works well for me:

I purchased the murad acne kit that comes with a face wash, a gel and spot pimple cream. I alternate the wash face with something more gentle like the Boscia gel. Then for makeup i swear by smashbox''s primer. It makes my face silky smooth and ready for makeup. I used to use Vincent Longo''s Water based foundation - which is great. except i don''t wear makeup on a daily basis so the compact dried up and it''s some expensive foundation ($50+ at Sephora).... so I have since discovered Bare Escentuals and have been using their mineral based powder makeup. It''s very natural and you use very little of it. I buy the starter kit at Sephora for $60 and it lasts for one year. I love the mineral veil - it creates the "soft focus" effect for the skin and sets the makeup.

HTH.
