Inspired by @mrs-b and @yssie who have recently shown off some to-die-for earrings, I realised a pair of mismatched lavender EC gems (one is spinel, the other tourmaline) would be perfect for something like this:

(Credit to: https://assael.com/product-category/earrings/ who seem to have stunning jewellery! )

My gems are similar size but slight variations on colour - the spinel is more blue/lavender whilst the tourmaline is pinker. I'll get some pics tonight & add them so you can see the gems. Both about 4x6mm in size.

For ages I kept thinking they'd be an awesome bypass cocktail ring but honestly I'm sort of off that idea at the moment. I do enjoy wearing earrings every day and I feel like I'd get a lot of wear out of these are long as they weren't too long or too big. I enjoyed my recent rings from Daniel M so much I think I'll ask him to do this project. He is so reasonable price-wise too (compared to Oz locally).

What do you think? Where else could I source some reasonable quality pearl drops like these PP ones? (I think there were all sold out on a VIP event)

What do you think - cool idea or bonkers? Budget would hopefully be under $500.

They look cool together and I really like the idea though I wonder if they could end up just looking mismatched? Not to try and enable or anything but maybe another mismatched stone (only a teeny one sonnot too many $) between the spinel/tourmaline and the Pearl?

I like the idea too. Think will look great. A suggestion is to have the pearl drops made detachable so you can wear as studs or with the drops or multiple pairs of drops. Just add a “tail” to hook the drops to the studs. Hope my description makes sense.

Hi @GliderPoss :wavey:

I agree with @meely. I think you can pull this design off, but I think you need to up the mis-match look or they might end up being too close to imply asymmetry, and just look like they don't quite 'go'.

I'd do a tiny demantoid (strong pure green) between the lighter stone and pearl, and a bright yellow between the darker stone and pearl. Yellow being lighter than green, the mean point when averaged out should be the same, visually, between each earring. So you'll get better balance. These colors are also opposite each other on the color wheel, so you'll get balance again.

And also...hallo, YUM!!

agree with Mrs. -b if you are going to do a mismatch make the contrast more obvious but in the same theme.

Forgive the terrible photoshopping, I had too much fun running with this idea. The possile combos are unlimited! I know you like the pearls, but there's options like purple turquoise, opal, gemmy briolettes!

I have Dan working on some bezeled studs for me right now, first project with him. Trying him out since you and a couple others have had good results recently! Fingers crossed!20190801_105141.jpg

You guys are the BEST! Love the mock up @CHRISTY-DANIELLE  so helpful to visualise this.

@icy_jade I too was thinking of making the drops detachable but wasn’t sure how to do it! Need to make sure they will be quite secure once hooked so don’t get caught in my long hair & fall off. Then I could have variety of drops to play with!

Also loving the extra contrast melee gem idea, at first I thought simply add diamonds but your are right @mrs-b a dash of another colour will add to the contrast. Not sure about green but I do wear blue a lot so maybe a bright blue & an aqua blue as opposites?

Any ideas where to get the pearls from? Would PP have stock like this?

Definitely a pretty good idea! I would also go for a colored stone and not a diamond to bring more color in it. Probably a cambodian zircon would be also an idea? Not the typical bright blues, there are also coming out some darker greenish blue ones which would fit.

Ooh that's smart! I like that detaching mechanism. Secure!!
Funny, but I chose nearly the exact blues at first, but changed it to green ( thinking the blue was just my personal preference, lol.)

I would find the pearls before I bought any accent stones. The pearls with have undertones, and I would want to choose accent stones that bought out that quality.

Have you tried contacting amsterdam pearls? Or putting a question to the pearls subforum here?

I've email Pearl Paradise already but will reach out to a few others i know too.

Etsy China vendors should have colorful drops I think... if you are looking for fwp.

This looks like HOW to do the detachable drops: B9F35FF0-DB3D-418B-A6F9-3659F09E87A1.jpeg

Yes like this. My jeweller calls it a “mouse tail” in Chinese language which always cracks me up a bit.

Looks like a fun project! :cool2:

Some thoughts... in general thritto @mrs-b - I’d also err toward embracing the mismatch ::)

The inspiration earrings... I’ll be honest, I actually dislike the balance of stone and pearl - IMO it would look more proportional had the designer followed that very boring “rule of thirds”! Either the drops or the stud gemstones should take mainstage - if they compete neither wins.

But I LOVE LOVE LOVE the mix of pearls and faceted gemstones!! And I definitely agree with @qubitasaurus - find The Pearls that make your heart sing first, then choose supporting gemstones!

She has an incredibly creative take on transforming pearls into art, she has an exceptional eye for outstanding specimens, and she’s wonderful to work with - she’s an expert who also makes thoroughness and communication her priorities. I have had several excellent experiences with her (I’ve got yet another project in progress with her right now!) and I heartily recommend asking if she’ll take your whole project on, not just sourcing of pearls - I think she could work magic with an idea like this :kiss2:

Just browsing Etsy thanks to the recommendations and saw these... thoughts? I'm leaning towards pair #5 (I like that this Vendor is showing the pearls in natural light).

I agree with @yssie that I need to "lean in" to the mismatch theme so thinking it also won't matter if the pearls don't match exactly either. They will definitely be far bigger than the stones so should add balance to the earrings. Spoke to Daniel M - he can do them in 14K gold with the hidden detachable hooks for the pearls.

I LOVE her work but suspect Little H would sadly be out of my price range! :shifty:

I added the wrong second link. There are lots of choices so search Etsy and have a look

Eg https://www.etsy.com/listing/717003...=sr_gallery-1-11&organic_search_click=1&frs=1

And I think #5 looks nice

Or maybe #4 in these ones? Gawd this is a slippery slope to buying everything....

So I’ve ordered the pearls but they are asking what size hole to drill? I’ve no idea what is required.... help?

Depends on the size of the finding... maybe 0.9? I’ve had some really thick finding that needed 1 though. I think best to check with your bench.

Oh that's a pretty idea. If it was me I'd find the middle round gem in as close of color to each as possible and put them with the opposite stone. That way they are mismatched but still coordinated.
