Engagement ring sapphire

How do you determine gray in a sapphire? I wouldn't have said I saw gray in his choice.. can someone explain?

Thanks!

I don't have a systematic way. But I would use the tanzanite tone and saturation chart in the new to coloured stones thread. I am sorry I am in a bit of a hurry (and am going to do this from memory rather than properly) but I think OP's stone was closest to second column, three from the bottom for me. undersaturated bluish stones shift grey. Undersaturated warm colours such as pink will shift towards brown.

Yeah if it shifts black you should definitely send it back!

Thanks. I have been reading many links on sapphire hue, tone and saturation.... lotta info, not many pics explaining,,,

Yeah, I can see it now. I hope Roger’s stones are true to what they appear because it’s been a bit of a struggle learning to interpret them. So I guess it’s been a good learning experience. But now I’m very excited to review the cushion and round tomorrow! Does anyone have any opinions on the photos of the two?

Whitewave -- your welcome. The sapphire you bought looks lovely though so I don't think you'll need the chart.

Jbows -- in that case I think you will love Roger Derry's stone. I am betting they will both be gorgeous.

For reference this is how I would interpret the description you gave (Note I wouldn't buy this stone without the vendor agreeing to get an agl or gia report saying heat only first as it is not cheap per ct. and I am getting the impression you are in a hurry so I think you'll actually be happier with the current approach).

Thanks, someone told me she saw grey in the photo of it on his hand (my avatar) so I don't see it but I clearly don't know what I am talking about!!!

If mine doesn't work out, I will keep working with Gary at Finewater as through our few emails, he seems like a great person I can have a future working relationship with.

Also, ups sent us both messages saying severe weather between Georgia and Louisiana (?!?!?) has made delivery impossible until tomorrow.

It looks great  -- I like the colour and the saturation. Don't second guess yourself -- and stop looking at stones for a couple of days! It is like buying a wedding dress, you can look adnauseam but all that will happen is that you will take all the fun out of it (and paralyze your own ability to make the choice).

Oh believe me, I stopped! This is way more exhausting than I want it to be!!! At least I got to the point this time of ordering a stone.

@Jbows sorry you were disappointed, I think it's too dark as well.

Could it be you need to look at photos that seem on the lighter side of your preference? That way, when you get the stone in person, it will be darker, but not too dark.

I am so excited as they are a velvety blue with some serious fire! They remind me a lot of Kate Middleton ‘s ring, although I don’t know how accurate that is. The first one is in my living room next to a window with lights on. Second and third are outside. The next two are of the round in my dining room that is a mix of led, fluorescent, halogen, and daylight, and then one under a lamp. Following that are of the cushion in the same two environments. Then comes the most unattractive photo I could take of the cushion (under a lamp with an led bulb) and then of it next to the window. The final picture is in a location right under a halogen fan of the round.

Picture of the round. I’m really sorry if my pictures aren’t up to snuff, I only have my iPhone camera and it’s a dark, overcast day out. I think my favorite is the round because of how it lights up but the cushion is so beautiful I really don’t know. I actually gasped when I opened both packages so now my poor boyfriend (who told me to pick the stone I want then he’ll take it and design a setting) has to live with my indecision for a few weeks.

Those look lively! I would say go with the one that made you gasp!! They are all beautiful stones.

Edited: I see they all made you gasp! That is a problem to have!!!

I have a while to view them so I’m going to look at them every day until I fall in love with one or the other. Since posting, I currently love the cushion more. I think. Honestly idk. I’m very excited to see yours so I can compare and contrast the two, just to make certain I don’t want a lighter one! :D

I think the round is really pretty!

@Jbows Those are really beautiful. I think I like the round more, from the pictures. Have fund choosing between two you love! Hate when that happens! :D
