I don't have a systematic way. But I would use the tanzanite tone and saturation chart in the new to coloured stones thread. I am sorry I am in a bit of a hurry (and am going to do this from memory rather than properly) but I think OP's stone was closest to second column, three from the bottom for me. undersaturated bluish stones shift grey. Undersaturated warm colours such as pink will shift towards brown.
Yeah if it shifts black you should definitely send it back!

Whitewave -- your welcome. The sapphire you bought looks lovely though so I don't think you'll need the chart.
Jbows -- in that case I think you will love Roger Derry's stone. I am betting they will both be gorgeous.
For reference this is how I would interpret the description you gave (Note I wouldn't buy this stone without the vendor agreeing to get an agl or gia report saying heat only first as it is not cheap per ct. and I am getting the impression you are in a hurry so I think you'll actually be happier with the current approach).
It looks great -- I like the colour and the saturation. Don't second guess yourself -- and stop looking at stones for a couple of days! It is like buying a wedding dress, you can look adnauseam but all that will happen is that you will take all the fun out of it (and paralyze your own ability to make the choice).
I have a while to view them so I’m going to look at them every day until I fall in love with one or the other. Since posting, I currently love the cushion more. I think. Honestly idk. I’m very excited to see yours so I can compare and contrast the two, just to make certain I don’t want a lighter one! Those look lively! I would say go with the one that made you gasp!! They are all beautiful stones.
Edited: I see they all made you gasp! That is a problem to have!!!
