My husband is at his cousin''s bachelor party in New Orleans this weekend. (Second year in a row he''s missed Mother''s Day for a bachelor party-last year I was pregnant and this year is my baby''s first mother''s day

).

So my sons (6 months and 3) took me out for breakfast (at 7am). We had a very nice time and they were perfect little angels.

Thanks, Lisa. I'm going to turn this thread on its head for a moment because I am very grateful still to have a mother at my (and her) age...and, let me add, a generous mother in love, kindness, warmth, and intelligence. I won't be physically with her today but she knows she is loved. I am holding her in my heart. I wish everyone on earth had a mother like mine. To paraphrase "Les Enfants du Paradis", if everyone had a mother who was truly motherly, the world would shine like the sun!

I got the cutest card. It has two Adirondac chairs sitting in the grass. Two little boys (maybe 4 and 7) are in one chair, one''s standing against the back looking at the boy in the other chair and the other is petting a dog. The other boy, who looks to be about 6, is literally leaping off the arm of the other chair.

It reads:

Ah, the precious moments

right before trips to the emergancy room.

(Somehow mom, you kept us in one piece)



This is just SO appropo, as I have 3 boys, and several trips were indeed made to the ER (the most exciting when the middle one lacerated his spleen and was air lifted to St. Louis), the last one just 2 weeks ago when my 17 year old cut his hand with an axe and needed 5 stitches.

Hubby and 2 children went out for a lovely dinner last night
Vic and Anthony''s here in Houston. They have the worlds best crab cakes!

Then my sweet 22yr. old daughter got up very early and made me
a wonderful breakfast. Hubby served me my coffee and paper. My younger son
at 20, slept in! Daughter and I went shopping and then she headed back
to Austin. I then went to visit my own mom who lives not far from me
but in an assisted living center. She doesn''t really get it that I''m
her daughter, but that doesn''t matter. We had ice cream together and I
gave her her gift. A nice day.

Thank you! All of us moms deserve a treat. Don''t we?! Boston Market cooked dinner for us tonight. Hubby''s doing the dishes, and the kids were on extremely good behavior today.

and he did leave me presents to find.

I know he feels guilty too..

I am so sorry to hear this Ann, my heart goes out to you. I fear my mother may be heading down that path as well.

I was swapping Mother''s Day stories with a group of other women today. One had the same experience that you did, Ann. She said her mother looks good and that she gets "fooled" into thinking, for a moment, that she will "be there" mentally...and of course she is not. A bit into the story swapping one woman said she would give anything to have her late parents back in the flesh, no matter what their mental state, just to hold their hands and visit with them again. (As I recall, neither of her parents died with dementia, however!)

This is tough. I applaud you, Ann. It is beautiful that you can take the positive from a visit with your mother (when someone else would only take the negative).

Ellen, if you have to go through this (and I hope that you are wrong and that you do not have to do so), I hope you find a group of people with whom you can share this. It is far too lonely and isolating to do alone, and far, far too sad.

I will hold both of you in my thoughts.
