Help re: setting for my new amethyst heart!

I just purchased this from Peter Torraca. Specs: Amethyst (Brazil). 9.66ct, 15.29x15.34x9.15mm. Untreated. LC3. Custom Heart.

The "problem" is that I fell in love  with this stone, while innocently browsing Peter's page. Now what do I do with it?

I already have a vintage amethyst ring, so I think this belongs in a pendant. I love halos, but I am afraid it would make it darker, or maybe detract from the main stone. Just a minimalist YG setting? Or a less minimalist setting with a teensy diamond on each side?

What do you think?

Do you like more traditional or modern settings? Do you have a metal color/type (ie silver, gold, platinum, white, rose, yellow)? What is your budget?

I've seen lots of heart amethysts in antique British jewelry, from the 1800's.

Very pretty stone!

Thank you! The metal: definitely yellow, maybe rose gold for an amethyst.
I like both traditional and modern (a la Tiffany/Paloma Picasso) settings. I think it's an unusual stone, so I don't want to set it in something that screams "mall jewelry".
Budget? Good question... :?

Thanks for the link! The setting is pretty, but I don't want anything that would cover the stone. I would have it custom set, since anyway I don't think I would find anything off the rack for it.

Well, as a large stone, a halo might make it look too big, unless you happen to not mind huge rings like yours truly. ;))

If a piece has fine craftsmanship, no matter the style, it won't scream "mall jewelry."

I think something like this screams, "mall jewelry,"

but a heavy mount with nice diamonds and excellent metal work, proportions, it won't.

Of course, that being said, some mall jewelry is nicer than others.

Yes, it does scream mall jewelry. And it's dated too. And no, I don't mind big jewelry. But would this be too big (done in YG)?

Or something very simple like this? Imagine a heart, of course, instead of the cabochon. Again, I don't want anything that would obscure or distract from the stone.

Most people that know me will know I am instantly drawn to that because it's a halo. LOL!

I also wear enormous rings, so if you can pull it off, and you don't feel uncomfortable, then go for it. I don't think the halo distracts from the stone at all.

I don't think the halo detracts either - I think it would be hard to outshine a stone as lovely as that! It BEGS you to notice it... =)

TL, I do wear large rings. About this aqua? But back to our stone here, this is a pendant, though I don't think it changes the equation very much in terms of choice.
Thanks to you both, TL and Bailey, now I am seriously eyeing the halo, which means extra $$$ for the setting. Oh well, I'll talk to my jeweler then...
So, on an unrelated topic, here's my aqua ring:

Yum

So, Preg, you like it better than the halo? Anyway, a halo of this size may be pricey, and the choice may boil down to a budget issue. :$$):

Wow, what a gorgeous setting! Though I am not fond of "rabbit ears" bails, and prefer sliders, esp. for larger stones, like this one I found around here (forgot the thread).

How about a round halo with the heart simply set dangling inside?

DK :))

Yes, that's a size I'm not afraid to wear, with six other rings too, at the same time!! LOL!

Nice!! :naughty:

PrincessCath, I'm in love with your profile pic. Is there a thread on that gorgeous ring?

The only problem with this size of ring being it's impossible to wear with gloves. :) So it's a "summer" ring. And I have people stopping me on the street to ask me (seriously) whether it's a blue diamond...

Thank you, Athena! No, no thread, though I asked here about yellow diamonds before my fiance had it made it 3 years ago (we are trying for the Guiness record of the longest engagement, but might get married in a few more years). It's an oval FYD he bought from Leibisch, a tad over 1 ct, VS1, set in yellow and white gold. Even for diamonds, I prefer colored stones. :)

Yes, but the stone is already a tad over 15 mm. That round halo would be huge.

It's gorgeous! Are they old cut stones?

I think it's a personal preference.

I might go with a halo to put in a stronger cleft into the heart, but I think the stone could hold its own without a halo.

I like the pendant that PrincessCath posted!

No, the stones are modern, including the 25 pointers in the halo. But the design was copied from an antique "marguerite" I saw. I thought it was light and romantic. :)

You are quite right about the cleft. Isn't that pendant a beauty? I love pink stones, but they look awful on me.

Not for me it won't be, however, it is down to personal preferences - I am looking for a 20mm+ gas giant of a pearl as a pendant drop without the bale!

I just set a stone in a ring that's 22x14. What is "huge' is speculative. LOL!

I love enormous rings, and small rings I wear as stackers. :cheeky:

That's a gorgeous heart ammy that I'd have no problem rocking. :appl:

Well, TL, prompted by your post, I just measured my largest ring: 30x20! It all tiny white diamonds, so it manages to look dainty in spite of its size. I would post a pic, but I don't know if it would be kosher here in CS. BTW, do you have threads with pix your rings? I might get an idea or two...

I didn't post my 20x14 ring here, but here's a pic of my amethyst ring. It is a huge trillion (13 carats) and I don't know the mm size, but it sits atop a bridge of more amethysts. It's humongous and people have seen it from across a huge room. LOL!

You should post your ring pic. Maybe we can start a thread on behemoth rings, LOL!
