Help!

First, can I adopt you? Second, I actually really like them all. But if I had to choose just one, it would be the ballerina ring (which I assume is the red spinel). The first ring is my runner up (which I assume is ruby). My opinions are based solely on your photos. You'd need to inquire about treatments and lab reports, etc. Happy hunting!!

Yes please.
I love them all.
What type of person is your mum? Is she conservative or flamboyant?
No 1 is very different and interesting and if she likes to be ”away from the crowd”, that’s the one.
No 2 is the most conservative, very standard / common design.
No3 is definately Art Deco, a very classic and classy design.
No 4 is an “fancier no2”, the ballerina setting is lovely (I’m a great fan of this setting style).
So my pick would be 4, then 1, then 3 and no 2 last choice.
all are beautiful however.

I love browsing Lang for inspirations, however, I find their prices a tad on the high side.

Given the choices, I would get No. 2 as that is more timeless.

I too a big fan of the ballerina setting, however, I am not certain if the shape of the stone suits this one as I believe an oval would fit better.

No. 3 is nice and delicate.

Not keen on No. 4 - if I were given this ring, the stones will be taken out and re-purposed into a bracelet/bangle of some sort.

All personal opinions and preferences etc. etc...

Whatever you pick, I am certain your mum will love it.

DK :))

Any other estate jewelers you recommend?

Just judging from the pictures, 2,4,3,1. But I am very conventional…. So it depends on your mom’s taste and what her other jewellery is like.

How nice of you to think of such a Christmas gift for your mother!

Can I be the outlier and say I like #3 the most? It's really elegant while being very unique. Then #2. Super classic. #1 has Too. Many. Prongs. #4 just doesn't speak to me.

I really love #3, the cabochon toi et moi. I adore cabochon-cut stones, and those baguette fans do it for me.

They are very different in style from each other. Only you know your mother best. How is the rest of her jewellery like?
1. Modern and funky?
2. Understated classic?
3. Conservative (antique)?
4. Daring classic?

The best person in the world to choose is your mum.
The second best is you, as you know her.

The worst people to choose are the rest of us, all Screenshot 2022-12-16 at 1.02.49 PM.png of us.

If it was me, I'd just ask the best person to choose, your mum, which she prefers.
Better yet, though less sentimental to people whose minds work that way, is just having her pick something at Lang's Antiques for $5 K, and leave it at that.

That way I don't have to pretend I have psychic, magical, special, and loving powers, and she doesn't have to act all happy if she dislikes it.
She gets exactly what she wants (which I see as the most considerate and loving choice) and she doesn't get stuck with what I want, or think she wants.
I see this as a win win.

But that's what kid of person I am, practical.
Both ways are perfect, since it's okay for people to vary.

That said, FWIW here's are my preferences.

These two tie for first place.
I like the red color of the cushion more than that of the oval, but if there has to be a halo, I prefer one of round stones to one of trapezoids.
I prefer a red that comes as close as possible to nailing RED.
I prefer the band on the left as it's lower key and does not draw attention away from the star of the piece, the center gem.

The two below tie for last place.
But I won't give reasons because those who disagree may find my choice of words to be unkind .

My vote is number 4 although I own two ruby ballerina rings so I am a bit biased. All are lovely though and I'm sure, whatever you pick, your mom will love the beautiful and thoughtful gift.

Great idea and great selection on your part! You have narrowed our universe to a manageable size.

They have a decent return policy, IIRC. For your type of purchase and timeline and budget, Lang would be hard to beat -- and you can do the apples-to-apples comparison, visually, and not have to (mentally) normalize for photo technique or impute vendor integrity, etc.

I love contemporary and classic. I think #4 is the best executed. If you described them with words alone, I would not have picked the "ballerina style" out of the line-up. I love the proportions of this one and it is petite enough to be very wearable. For folks who are not true colored-stone connoisseurs, the diamonds really perk it up. It also looks like the most appealing colored stone of the bunch.

This new one is pretty, too, at ~ $3,500. I have a similarly-colored and -proportioned spinel in a man's ring (although it's a little bigger and mounted E/W).

This is a nice-sized spinel at nearly 11mm in the longest dimension.

It is more understated than any above -- and all your money goes toward the center stone and not the diamonds. Many of us "Colored Stone" folks love this model but it is less "look at me" than any of your four fine selections above.

Oh yeah, they're out there. Many antique vendors. Make your eyes cross with looking.
Easiest for searching: All of these vendors are cross posted to Instagram/1stDibs/Ebay/Rubylane Are we looking for contemporary or vintage/antique? Does she have a ruby color and style preference?

I know, I'll stop now or else there will be ridiculous amounts!

My personal favorite and if I had the money- I wouldn't be telling you about it

4 is the standout for me - classic, beautiful, wearable, and still showy without being too much. 1 has too many prongs, 3 doesn’t appeal to me for some reason (I like the idea of toi et moi but not for coloured stones) and 2 is like a subdued version of 4 imo.

Any views OP?

Really something deco or retro. I ordered the ring from lang, but the options you sent are dreamy. do you know anything about these sellers?

that 4th option is perfect.... do you have experience with that seller? She would love that!

No, I haven't bought from her personally. Just one of the many places I covet from.
She also goes by Sylvatis on Ebay with 5k+ positive reviews. She seems reasonably priced. I've had her rings saved for ages. Her reviews seem to be mostly positive and she's been around for years. The only caution is that she doesn't seem to accept returns- so I would contact her with any questions before buying, though Etsy does offer protection if something was physically wrong with the ring that she didn't state, etc.
I love that one, too. Just so pretty.

Hi, @Josh_loveofjewels!

Beautiful rings -- and my heavens, what a lucky mom to have such a thoughtful son. I'm a big fan of Lang, and I've visited them a number of times in person. They're in San Francisco, near where I live. They're not a low-cost option, for sure, but I don't find their prices outrageous. And I like their return policy; I've only needed to use it once, but the whole process was seamless. They refunded my payment in full even though they'd resized the ring at my request. Their customer service is top-notch.

If I were going into San Francisco today, I'd offer to try on various rings and give you my unbiased, spinel- and ruby-loving opinion. Actually, you know, if I end up going to the city anytime in the next week, I'd be more than happy to do that. What a fabulous excuse to pay Lang another visit ...

Edited to add: Probably less critical now that you've already chosen a ring. LOL! Perhaps I could finish reading the thread before I type out a reply next time? Well, the offer still stands, and I hope your mom is thrilled with your gift!

Hi all!

I looking for a ruby/spinel/pink sapphire ring for my mom for Christmas. I have a few options from Lang... thoughts?
All are under 5000.

I like no. 2. In fact i regularly check out Lang’s rubies and admired this one. You pay a little extra for their expertise but they have nice things. Boerumbiddy.

In fact I think No. 2 is on the purplish side of red but is classic and has presence beyond its size.
