What a cutie! I didn''t see this thread last year, but how exciting that he came back after hibernation.

You might try him on a little canned dog food. I had a box turtle for a while when I was a kid - Pebbles by name - and that is what we fed her (in additon to veggies and such). I don''t recommend that you keep him inside, though. Mine always did her business in her water dish and was quite smelly.

I couldn''t take the constant cleaning, so I donated her to the science teacher at my mom''s school (as a class pet, not for experiments, lol).

When I was even younger, we found a box turtle that had apparently been hit by a car and lost a leg at some point in her life. There was some of damage to her shell as well, but she otherwise seemed fine. We named her Run-over and relocated her to our back yard. She lived there quite happily for about two years, maintenence free, but then she disappeared and we moved.

Good luck with your turtle friend, Skippy, and keep posting pictures!

PS: He seems a little dirty from his hibernation. Perhaps he would like a bit of a bath?

Fata, thank you for sharing your box turtle story. I did notice he was dirty; I think I will move his dish over to where he is hanging out see if he gets in the water. I need to put some food out for him too. I use to like when he would come to the door so hopefully he does that more this summer so I can give him Strawberries again like Linda said. hehee

eta: the little guy doesn't look any bigger; I need to see if he is a boy or girl too next time I see him.

This is just the nicest thread! Skippy, I just LOVE hearing about people being nice to animals. You must be very soft hearted. When I was little, we had a turtle that we fed pinches of canned dog food to like Fatafelice said. Out trurtle (Myrtle) thrived on it. She (he?) went from being quarter sized to well, BIG.
