I just wanna say -- the random comments thread

I woke up to temperatures in the 70's - a front :wink2: and was actually able to get some serious yard work done before breakfast!

oh, and -

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, EVERYONE!

Note to all. peppermint extract does NOT go in warm milk. Ever. :knockout:

Yuck.

Marmite, all the way.

My sister is spending the summer traveling thru Spain and is keeping a blog. I've just read thru it and was reminded of what an amazingly talented writer she is. It makes me so proud of her (and completely indignant that she got ALL the literary genes!).

What exactly is Marmite. I've seen it in the stores here but it looms a bit scary and the name puts me off.

Hah!

April - just buy a jar. Don't smell it when you open it - it's an acquired scent ::)
Get some plain bread, butter, and plain salted potato chips while you're shopping, and make yourself a marmite and chip sandwich.
Trust me.
It has to be marmite - vegemite is a whole different type of ick.

My greyhound put his favorite tennis ball squeaky toy in his bed. He just spent 5 minutes trying to situate himself in his bed so that he would not be sleeping on said squeaky toy. If he put the toy in his bed, couldn't he just move it out of his bed, instead of moving his entire body around it? :Up_to_something:

An answer to "what is Marmite" for the more cautious among us: http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil/marmite.htm#whatis

(I can't say that I've ever tried Marmite. Having been born and reared in Holland though I have my own acquired taste - licorice, and particularly salted and double-salted licorice. Like Marmite, licorice is said to have some medicinal properties - tummy soothing - and there is a water-soluble powdered version available in Holland so mothers can feed it to pre-tooth kiddies if they wish. Haven't heard of mothers using it as a nursing aid though...)

Maybe someday I'll be brave. Until then I'll eat something else. Like peanut butter. :twirl:

I made flour tortillas for the first time tonight. I did find them in a grocery store, but it was the equivalent of $7 US for six and who knew how fresh they were or were not. let me just say... Easy and Soooooooo good. Why have I never made them before??

Sounds yummy, Yssie! I made the Indian version (nan) a long time ago but not recently... I should get out that recipe and try it again!

I love it when good things happen to people that work their tail off. (A friend of mine just got a promotion and will be working with a group he's a great fit for in the head office, and I think it's really going to do great things for him. I really like working with him and will miss him, but this is going to be fantastic for him and his family.)

Survey says..... Three additional months in South Africa. Not coming home until December now.

It's attack of the sweet tooth today at work.

I love days when I can go out to lunch with a good friend and then spend some time at the pool. It's been the perfect summer day.

Call me naive (you wouldn't be teh first :wink2: ) but I love this story about Mila Kunis accepting a Marine's invite to be his date at a corps ball. It sounds spontaneous and really sweet to me.

Of course Nov. is a long ways off...
http://blog.movies.yahoo.com/blog/1693-mila-kunis-accepts-marines-invite-to-corps-ball
Sadly, she already cancelled.

Maybe yes, maybe no...

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/07/16/mila-kunis-reportedly-blasts-billy-bush-for-marine-ball-report/

but that was what I meant in noting that Nov. is still a long ways off. Her response may have started off as being spontaneous, but there's a really long time left in which real life can interfere! (or unreal life, in the internet celeboshpere.)

I miss real yellow corn.

None of the big grocery stores near me are offering yellow corn on the cob this summer. I know white corn is supposed to be sweeter and all, but it just doesn't taste like corn to me!

Went kayaking with my dad this afternoon, and we happened upon a gravestone on the river bank. Monday's mission: figure out where it goes, and return it.

Never, ever, EVER look at your bank account balance after wiring off payment for a FCD. Arrrgh. Borderline depressing.

So I've been sick the past week. It started as mostly a cold but has turned into a constant butterfly feeling in my stomach, which then turns into turmoil when I eat. I didn't eat at all last night... just a chicken wing for trial (no way) and a bite of mashed potatoes which again didn't sit too well. This morning I managed warm milk and honey, but let me just tell ya... beans beans. A co worker gave me some bean dip with a bit of ground beef in it and man... it's sitting great and is making me feel so much better. Anything I have to chew makes me want to go BLEH when I think of it, including my comfort foods. And soup makes my brain and body say the same thing... but this... ahhh sustenance.

No. I'm not pregnant btw.
