I think I have found the stone but I need some advice please

Re: I think I have found the stone but I need some advice pl

Haha definitely will post asap. The SO was even happier with the guarantee that if I wasn't 100% happy he could get all his money back!

So excited to go see it again tomorrow.

Now need to go and speak to the jeweler, it's ok for me to take a picture of someone else's work yeh?

Re: I think I have found the stone but I need some advice pl

We did it! We finalised the stone. That was the stone! Can't believe it. My vendor showed me a few more stones and they just didn't compare the fire, scintillation and light return were unbelievable so we are very happy.

Now I am just going about making appointments with jewelers. I am a bit confused as to what sort of pave I want. I think I want:

But wonder what other options for the pave I have. Any ideas?

By the way thank you to everyone for your advice. The one inclusion I could see after looking under the loupe is prongable so that was such a relief plus I kind of like that as others have said its a birthmark, its my stone.

Re: I think I have found the stone but I need some advice pl

congrats! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Re: I think I have found the stone but I need some advice pl

Thanks Amysbling. Hopefully it won't take too long. How long does it generally take for a setting? I just need to make an appointment asap.

Re: I think I have found the stone but I need some advice pl

Wow, this looks A LOT like the Tiffany Novo setting my gf fell in love with... I wonder if she'd like this as well. Actually.... is this the Tiffany Novo? :?:

imagine this setting with the round cut is what we're looking at.... very similar

Yes love novo but with a RB but 6 prongs probably. What sort of pave is that?

mif_ , first of all, your stone is WOW and when set is going to be fab!!!!!! Secondly, I think that it is you that has asked about Sydney jewellers on another forum, but I am having trouble posting there so I hope you don't mind me responding here. I wanted to recommend King St Designs in the Dymocks building on George St. I have been talking with them about a re- set/ overhaul and I have found them very pleasant and down to earth deal with, they are very patient as I rattle off questions and change my mind multiple times. Perhaps more importantly, the samples of their work I have seen (both in the studio and on my colleagues hands) is of a very high standard in my opinion. One of my colleagues has quite a detailed cushion halo – it is impeccable and their after service has been fantastic with them not hesitating to pop her set into the ultrasonic or give a quick replate (hers is wg) gratis every so often. Their prices seem very reasonable, from the little research I have done the price of a simple 6 prong solitaire in plat is only a couple hundred AUD more than some of the online vendors often recommended here when you take into account the shipping and taxes etc. Whilst I definitely considered going online after seeing all the fabulous rings PSers have, since I have all the stones already, I thought it would be easier just to go local. Hope this helps, and whoever you decide to go with, please post pics and your thoughts on them – always good to know where good jewellers are!

How funny! I am actually in discussions with them also. I think they're the ones and yes there prices are great. I think I'm going to go white gold, is this a mistake?

Re: I think I have found the stone but I need some advice pl

What a coincidence! No, I don't think wg is a mistake - I did wg first time around - I have been considering changing to plat to reduce the maintenance - but then plat scratches easily and I might end up having to get it polished regularly anyway - and then there's the issue of plat rubbing against my wg /rg stacking bands.... there are quite few threads on the pros and cons of the wg and plat if you do a search.

Hello Sydneysiders :wavey: :wavey:

Would love to hear how you guys go as already thinking of changing my band 3 months in!! Terrible I am! Anyway, the original vendor is from Perth and their selection of bands is not great, so am thinking of going with a jeweller in Sydney for the convenience (and also so I can harrass them for updates more constantly :cheeky: ) if I do change the band before the wedding.

As for platinum - yes it does scratch very easily, evident from my ER a mere infant of only 3months. The front part (shank) is still spotless, but the inner band in my palm is fairly scratched already, and I don't do any housework wearing the ring! And of course, it is alot more expensive to go plat in Aus than WG.

Another point though, plat cleans nicer in the ultrasonic cleaner than WG. My ER band looks fantabulously shiny once I've given it a bath (bar the scratched bit) in the cleaner than my WG rings.

Sorry to go off topic a bit but... daysie, I would love to see some pics of your ering and the scratches on the plat - I really can't decide whether to invest in changing everything over to plat - it would help so much to see some pics! I would also love your opionion on what you prefer too, wg or plat? Especially cost, do you feel the extra cost of plat is worth it?

Hi Littlelanhua,

If it's not urgent, I can take some good photos of the scratches after my dad gets back from o/s with the SLR. RIght now I'm restricted to the first gen iphone, and I don't thnk it will pick up anything. My dad will only be back after 28th Dec though.

To give you an idea regarding the $P - I paid $1,300 for the plat whereas it would have been $800 had i gone with the WG. But this was with an online vendor. I was recently in a jewellery store, and for virtually the same setting (their's was even lighter in weight than mine), it was going for $2,000. So unfortunately, there is a huge $P difference.

In spite of my complaints about the scratches, I would still choose to go for plat. I'm not sure if others will agree, but I personally feel that the plat has that icy look and would go nicer with a high colour (i.e. D-I range) than WG. I'm not sure if this is the case with your bands, my WG bands have started to take on a yellowish feel (I know different skin types will react differently to WG). As such, I will worry about too much the band having too much contrast with the diamond (in terms of colour).

One thing you may consider, is to purchase your rings and ER setting from the U.S in plat, if you do go down that path. That should save you quite a bit, esp with the Xmas sales, still relatively strong AUD and retraction of the 5% import duty. I am thinking of purchasing the WB this way, and also gives you alot more options as well.

Re: I think I have found the stone but I need some advice pl

MIF: just had another thought. I know you are set on pave, but given a stone of your size, a round of tiny insignificant pave stones may detract from the beauty of your centre stone.

I was also quite set on having a pave (Bluenile petite pave band) - but the options available in Aus is really not that fantastic. And after reading others' opinions here, I went with a Tiffany knife edged solitaire. And I think this was the best decision I made, because the setting is so simple, you don't get the "busyness" from all the pave stones and the centre stone really stands out. But again, that is just my preference. Also, my centre stone is only 2cts, so much smaller than yours in comparison. I think overall, and I'm not sure if others will agree, but your 4ct will look better and bigger if it was in a solitaire than in a pave.
