OK, I posted this over in the LIW board, but I thought I would post it here as well:

Everyone (all the LIW that is), was right that it (the proposal) was supposed to be Friday, but those of you who saw my post before know that at the last minute Friday afternoon my mom had to go to the ER.  Fortunately she is just fine, but that was our evening yesterday.  So today, the first clue that something is up is when bf volunteers to do the laundry all by himself.  Turns out that was to get out of the apartment in order to call the restaurant and reschedule things for tonight.  So at about 4:30, he goes and gets dressed up, and tells me to get dressed up too because we are going out to dinner.  So I get dressed up, trying not to get my hopes up, and he dirves me over the Golden Gate Bridge (we live in SF) to Marin to this really amazing restaurant that those of you who are local might be familiar with - the Lark Creek Inn, which has amazing food and wine and is tucked away in this really beautiful yellow victorian house in Larkspur.

So we are seated at our fairly private table, and the waiter sets down two menus for us, but they aren''t in the usual plastic sleeves.  Now, I am a vegetarian and I am allergic to bell peppers and I don''t like mushrooms, so I often end up having to order things that aren''t on the menu or things without stuff, which is kind of embarrassing.  But this time I notice there are 3 each appetizer and entree selections, all vegetarian, not a bell pepper or mushroom in sight.  So now I know something is up (he did call and got the amazing custom menu just for us).  The waiter comes and takes our order, and (now) FI ( just had to throw it in), tells me he loves me and I''m the light of his life, and says "I''m going to do something now that I probably shouldn''t do," and gets down on one knee right there in the restaurant and asks!!

The waiters and manager and stuff were all in on it, and they were all very excited - they even sent us free champagne as a congratulations   After dinner (which was amazing, btw), we drove to my mom''s house to give her the good news.

Me for the foreseeable future:

It really is stunning!!! Did you have his watch with you at dinner?

OK, more pics from this morning - please excuse my puffy morning hands in the hand shots...

Teebee - I did have his watch with me, and I also got him a sapphire stud to wear in his one pierced ear - he loves them both, and I will try to get pics of those as well :-)

Thanks for the nice thoughts everyone - I have had so much fun admiring everyone''s pieces on here!!

How wonderful for you Amber. The ring is beautiful and sparkly.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! What a wonderful proposal!! And I just LOVE your ring!!

Did you custom order your setting from Signed Pieces and then had your jeweler set your stone on the setting? Or did you send your stone to Signed Pieces and had them set it?

It turned out beautiful!

Hi guys - thanks for all the kind words everyone, I am definitely still walking on clouds here. However this morning I told me lab director and his first comment about the ring was to call it a "honker," which made me really self-conscious. I guess part of me feels kind of silly as a first-year graduate student and only 22 years old wearing a ring like this, especially with my usual ratty jeans and sweatshirt daily uniform. I was wondering if any of you have ever felt like this and how did you get over it? I really love my ring, and it makes me happy, but I do feel vaguely guilty and a bit ridiculous wearing something so large and sparkly.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Any thoughts? Thanks!
My thought is your ring is GORGEOUS!

Congratulations.

Don''t be self conscious about a comment like that. I''m betting your lab director was trying to be complementary. So many here have posted about rude comments, but this just sounds like he wasn''t sure exactly what to say, rather than make you feel funny about your ring. . .he IS a guy, you know. lol! A woman would be, "oooh, ahhh," but some guys are just, well, guys.

Anyway, congratulations and enjoy your ring! . . .AND, FWIW, you''re working your BUTT off in grad school, right? You''ve earned your right to a pretty ring.

lovely ring!!! just beautiful.

don''t let anyone make you feel bad about your ring...i think someone calling it a honker is a compliment!!

i was just telling another PS''er that my main outfit is jeans, flip flops, and a tee/sweater, i drive an older car....sure we have a brand new townhouse--but in general we live pretty basic lifestyles, except for my diamonds!! i adore my diamonds, my sparkly bling bling rings, and i don''t care if i am wearing sweats or shorts or jeans, i love my rings..and they look fabulous on my hand. sure it may not go with the overall image i am portraying most of the time (though i do clean up quite nicely..hehee)...but i don''t care. i also think it''s fun to be ''different'' than people expect..you know?

something as personal as jewelry and/or diamonds and/or your engagement/ring set is meant to make you and your fiance happy with your choice, not anyone else.

congratulations and again, LOVE the ring!! of course!

Very cool!
