Hello all! I have been a lurker on this forum for quite sometime, but now more than ever I need some help. I love all the advice given, wedding ideas, and honesty. A little background, I got in engaged last May and I am getting married this May in South Carolina. I purchased my Nicole Miller in October and received it early this month. Not so in love with it anymore and friends and family think I''m nuts, I think I need some outsider opinions. Below is my dress, now I think in order for this dress to really work I am going to need to be 20 lbs lighter and also have the top part lowered (i think it covers my neck too much) and also a more dramatic V-neck (kind of like jaders).

Opinions please:
1. Lose 20lbs (pretty easy for me and already in the works) and change the neckline
2. Try to hunt down another gown in time

I understand I am asking for honest opinons here, but try not to be too harsh

I may have to end up with this dress anyway due to limited funds.

Thanks!

Guess I need to attach my dress

Okay. I think 20 pounds is a bit harsh. But yes, it's not doing anything good for you in the hips.

I think with the top altered to fit you better, your hips slimmed gown and maybe a sash at your waist to break it up the dress would be nice. May is plenty of time to get you slimmed down if you love the gown.

You asked for honesty and well... IF you DON'T love the gown then... I'd start looking. You can list that puppy on ebay (I've got one up there) and hit the stores for discontinued samples and so forth. What size are you, what's your wedding like in formality, what's your style, and what do you want in a gown?

ETA: Yes the V needs to be made wider and more prominent. Anne Barge had some gowns that did that neckline really well.

Hiya! I don't think you need to lose any weight. I think the dress is actually very flattering on your figure. Maybe just some spanx? Spanx are, like, magic. Definitely TRY the Spanx before you give up on that dress.

However, I do think fixing the neckline is a good idea. It just looks a little wonky. Maybe a sweetheart neckline? I'm no good at that kind of thing though so I'll let the other ladies chime in...

I agree, I do not think you need to lose 20 lbs and yes, SPANX are a god-send!
The neckline is a bit off/akward. Maybe once you fix that you''ll fall in love with it again!

Congrats!

Welcome!

I''m looking at this pic of your dress and having mixed feelings. Overall, it looks nice and I actually like the unique shape of the neckline. However, the fabric looks stiff and almost like you''re wearing a sheet. I think the hip area fits, but it''s not completely flattering. I''m thinking that could easily be amended by a sash or something similar.

So glad you ladies have already chimed in! I totally agree about spanx and have some on order right now

The main reason for weightloss right now is that I am only 5''1 and about 20 lbs heavier than I should be, but love that you think 20lbs is too much

My idea for my dress is plain and simple and definitely not poofy. I have a feeling I will stay with this dress, but have also made an appointment with another bridal salon to see if there''s something that makes me go "Wow, I feel like a bride!" I will be getting married in a church, and my reception is here and will be in the evening:

Gypsy: I think I forgot to answer some of your questions in my last reply, I am 5''1 and between an 8 and a 10. I want my wedding to have a relaxed feel to it, nothing too formal. I would say my everday style is pretty simple and basic. When I imagined my dress before I bought this, it was something fitted and simple, no beading or embroidery. But it could possibly be something poofy and sparkly would make me feel more like a bride. I''m so torn

misysu2: The fabric, it is 100% silk. I think I may go buy some ribbon and see if that helps w/ that area

I agree with the spanx thought...the right undergarment makes the outter garment look custom. Honey, you are GREAT the size you are! And that dress is really contemporary for a today bride. I love the simple lines. You will make a beautiful bride!

Indies Wonky is a good description of the top. The crisp design is fabulous but it needs some reigning in. Call alterations and ask for the wonky removal package. Head to a department store and get spanxed. When you put that gown back on after being dewonkied and spanxed you will be convinced~you are perfect and you have a winner!

(Spanks does for our bods what panty hose did for our legs or hips...magic. Who doesn''t need a little magic?)

Even my mom and I plan to wear Spanx under our Nicole Miller gowns (us too! yay!) and we''re 5''2" / 104 lbs and 5''3" / 108 lbs.

EVERYBODY looks better with Spanx.

Can''t thank you guys enough for all the great feedback! Should have joined this forum a loooong time ago!

I should be getting my spanx in with my veil order in 3 weeks. I will try on my complete outfit, shoes, jewlery, spanx, veil and see if I feel better about my decision. Also, I called my bridal salon and spoke with them regarding the neckline. They said it shouldn''t be a problem to make the adjustments that I''m asking for.

BTW, I absolute love the shoes I ordered: http://www.myglassslipper.com/products2.cfm/ID/3481

Although I''m still going to go visit another bridal salon, who knows, maybe I''ll be a two dress bride!

Just remember to get the mid thigh to below bust spanx - I find the shorter ones just make bits bulge out beyond!

I agree with Independent! Spanx will make a huge difference! I don''t think you need to lose that much weight!

Also, I like the suggestion of a sash around the waist, but another idea that could be really cool is to have the midsection have some alencon lace placed on it. There was this gorgeous Christos one that was very similar to your gown (silhouette and fabric) except it had this gorgeous band of lace around the midsection. I just looked online and I can''t find it

uga, I like the dress on you. I agree with the others who say the top is a little wonky and spanx would help. I think once your dress is fitted, you will love it since the dress seems loose on you.

I like you dress and once the top works better I think you will feel better about it. I really liked the suggestion about the lace in the middle. It would make the dress more "bridal" which you requested. It would also look better for your figure by drawing attention to small waist. Also, shine like your dress fabric amplifies bumps like stomach pooches (I am tiny and I still have that pooch) so a on shiny lace would disguise that as well.

I couldn''t find a picture without the sort of belt thing, but the lace is like what I am trying to describe.

Brazen- that is exactly the type of lace look I was looking for! I like it both with the "belt ribbon" across and without. I think that would look really, really great. Like Brazen said, it would give it a bridal look and add a little waist definition.

Let us know what you decide!

I LOVE that dress!!!! Who makes it????? PUH LEASE do tell!

uga1...I think some alterations will help a lot. Having the right undergarments can make a world of difference. I do love how clean and simple the dress is. You look like you could be comfortable in it all day!

On a side note, we considered Larkins on the River, too! We ended up going with a beautiful lodge in upstate SC. Where are you at? I am in Atlanta, and if you are near there, I can recommend bridal shops if you want to keep looking.

Hello Gypsy,

Its lovely isn''t it?

http://www.edenbridals.com/2253-p-1170.html

I think the most beautiful thing about it is that the dress costs about $500.

It''s beautiful. Really beautiful. Wonder how Harleigh would look in it....

I think if you fixed the top and gave it more definition, and maybe added a sash and some pearls or beading on the bodice it would be lovely. You are not heavy, but good for you for trying to slim down, I am right there with you and feel I am lugging around a lot of me that I should not be. I do not really look it, but I feel it, so I know where you are coming from. If it is easy for you to drop weight, keep at that, and see what you can do in the meantime to give the dress some pizazz and break it up a bit. It is nice but a bit plain to me.

Wow! Thanks for all the great advice ladies, I knew I was coming to the right place. I think I will got to JoAnn''s Fabrics this weekend and see if I can create a mock middle, try some lace and a ribbon. See how that comes out. I also can''t wait to go in for alterations in April and say "Can you de-wonkify the top" hee hee. I am having more hope that I can make this dress actually work w/ the right alterations, spanx, and a few additions.

Brazen: Love that dress! I will try to find a salon in my area that carries that and try it on

Amandine: Yes, I actually live in Duluth. My fiance is from Greenville (and unfortuantely a Gamecock), and since he has the most family we figured Greenville would be the most convenient and cheaper! We fell in love with the Wyche Pavilion at Larkin''s but it was booked every Saturday from April thru July, hence we are having our wedding on Friday May 23rd.
As for my dress, I went to Kelly''s Closet in Atlanta, they have amazing gowns and wonderful service. I just think I feel like I jumped the gun a little and made a quick decision. Heck, this was the second dress I had ever tried on! If you have any recommendations for salons in the area please let me know!

I definitely agree with everyone else that with the alterations and the spanx the dress would look amazing! I really like the dress as it is however the top of it is throwing me a bit the way it is now. I know that it will look great when it''s altered.

I too agree with this - I think it will look great, uga! My build is very similar to yours, and my dress was a simple sheath of silk satin, but it had this band of alencon lace through the middle and a skinny ribbon that completely defined my figure.

Everyone gave you such great suggestions. I agree it is the neckline that really throws off the design. I am 5''1" too so I can relate
2.gif

LaurenthePartier: Your dress is to die for! I love how low it dips in the back, wonder if I can get mine to do that too!

Tacori: Don''t you just love being this short? My fiance is 6''1 so I get frequent neck cramps
2.gif

I went to Kelly''s Closet, too! I agree on their customer service. I did love a Birnbaum & Bullock dress there...but my budget didn''t.

Let''s see...Formally Yours in Lilburn: tons of dresses (almost more then you can process), at a lower price point then Kelly''s Closet (no appt needed). Very nice, good customer service, too. Wedding Angels in Roswell: not as large of a selection, but again, very nice and good service (appt needed). LaRaines in Virginia Highlands: loved this place, too, good customer service, too. A new location for them as of November, I think (appt needed). Priscilla of Boston in Buckhead: if you are a lurker, there isn''t much to say! They have gorgeous dresses (appt needed). There are others I have been to, but as the PSers can tell you, I used to work at a bridal store (now out of business, the owners retired), so I am pretty picky about selection, pricing, and service.

I hope this helps!

I think the dress is very pretty....I actually remember trying the same Nicole Miller on. I agree with the other posters that with the right undergarments and alteration, the dress will look fabulous! I think the seaming of the dress is very slimming.

And, I can relate to having a tall fiance as well...I''m 5''3" and my fiance is 6''5". I''m already worried about our wedding pics!

Amandine: Thanks for all the suggestions! I had such a wonderful experience at Kelly''s and would recommend them again in a heartbeat. I have heard that Formally Yours is great as well, but if it''s really cluttered I don''t think I can handle it. I get overwhelmed when there are clothes scattered everywhere. I haven''t heard of Wedding Angels or LaRaine''s, might have to check them out. And Priscilla of Boston
3.gif
that place is beyond gorgeous, I have tried to stay away from them and Bridals by Lori due to the high prices. I already went over my budget by $1000 on this dress, so you can tell I''m not very good on a budget
11.gif
Who knows what I would do if I went into one of those stores!

SuLi: Thanks! When I first saw this on the hanger I was like "no way, it looks awful". But my sales person insisted that it looks totally different on, and she was right. I was also quite concerned because after I bought the dress I searched online I couldn''t find pictures of "real brides" in the this dress, still can''t. On another note, WOW 6''5! How tall are your heels going to be?
