Is a double halo “too much” for an engagement ring?

A double is too much for me, but some folks might think my rings are too big. So, very much and each to their own situation.

What a double is on a ring you’ll wear a lot is a pain to clean. That’s a lot of prongs and under galleries to catch crude. If you’re someone who really likes their stuff cleaned and sparkly - I’m not sure a double is the best way to go.

Oh cleaning is something I didn’t think about. That could be a problem, especially since putting a halo/pave ring in the ultrasonic is not the greatest idea right? Definitely will have to think about that!!

To me, cleaning my rings is no biggie. I drop them into a jar of jewelry cleaner (the kind with the little brush) every other day or so as part of my regular routine.

I don't think a double halo of tiny stones on a 3 carat round looks too large, personally.

But when in doubt, I tend to pick the simpler option and it's worked out (for me) so far. After looking at a zillion examples online, I thought a double halo, two halo stone colors and two halo metal colors were all things that could make my ring look too busy or detract from the center stone.

But going with only one of those three things (the double halo) significantly cut down on the risk of it looking too busy or detracting from the center stone. I do have rose gold prongs around my pale pink center stone though because I thought they'd seem more invisible there than white gold.

So that's what I'd do. A double halo, all in white diamonds and white metal, except for gold prongs around the yellow center stone.

Good to know the jewelry cleaner works well enough to keep your jewelry sparkling! I tend to run my stuff through the cleaning liquid about once a week, but I do windex and hot water every other day or so. So it seems that as long as I'm diligent with the jewelry cleaner my ring should be just fine.

I think your caution about not making things too busy is a good one. I definitely plan to do the YG prongs on the stone, so that they blend in; just like you recommended! If I do two colours of melee, it'll have corresponding metal colours as well (yellow melee in YG and white metal in WG). I think the problem is that I like both looks (all white vs mixed metal). I think the mixed metal will definitely look more unusual, but it runs the risk, like you said, of looking busy. But then if I go all white, I feel like I could just do a single (bigger) halo as well.

Many of my inspo pics have a lot of mixed metal and melee going on, and I find it really beautiful, but I don't know if I will love it on myself, or love it for everyday.

Thank you for weighing in! I have lots to think over for the next two months. I think I've narrowed it down to the following four options:

- Solitaire, in WG. This is probably the unlikeliest one since while I adore solitaires, I don't like yellowy solitaires, at least in pictures (have been looking at a LOT of yellow diamond solitaires).

- Double halo ring, delicate white melee, in WG. I do love the look - your ring for example, is gorgeous, and I love the band idea you went with, it's a bit different than the usual and I reallyyyy like it. But, I also think that if I go for all white melee and halos, I could just do a larger single halo instead (so instead of two halos of 1-1.5mm stones each, one halo of 2.5-3mm stones) and get a really clean looking ring.

- Single halo ring, larger white melee, in WG. I also really love a single halo - classy and timeless. I could go with a slightly bigger halo which will get me the same face up size as the double, and then it wont look too busy. I also then have the option of a second "hidden" halo in profile, if I really want that double halo nod.

- Double halo ring, delicate melee, YD in YG and WD in WG. This runs the risk of being the most busy, but also the most unusual (especially if I put the yellow ring on the outside, like you suggested). If I keep the yellow ring on the inside, it'll help bridge the transition to the outer halo. But I don't want it to look like i just want my stone to look bigger - I mean, that's a nice plus and all, but 3ct+ is a pretty good size.

I feel a lot more sure in my head after putting my options out like that! Thank you for all your help - you've really given me a lot to think about.

Re a double halo of same-same white diamonds and white metal, I'd just add that I think it would still be a completely different look from a single halo with larger diamonds. To me, the double halo is a more contemporary look whereas the larger single halo would be a flower look or something like that. Jmho but just wanted to toss that out there. I can't wait to see what you get!

That’s also a good point and is why I haven’t ruled out the all-white double halo. Will definitely update on the direction I go with!!
