Is This A Men’s Ring?

Era gem is overprice - if you want a small diamond we’ve got small diamonds for you elsewhere.

The other two are not good diamonds. I would pass on those.

The era gem has the design I like. But I want as close to 2 ct as possible. That’s why the idea of a sytnthetic stone in an early 20th century ring works so well imo. Get the ring for less than $500 - $700, then spend $5000 on a diamond. Originally I wanted a squarish diamond. Like asscher or radiant. But it seems like most early 20th century rings have round diamonds.

As far as something custom. I just don’t know how to go about that. I don’t know what words to use. And I don’t what I like or dislike until I see it.

The problem with just swapping out a stone for another in the designs you like is that often the prongs or bezel are mangled and the result is a ring that looks worse than before you replaced the stone.
Ideally yes we find one that ticks all your boxes-
But honestly it’s very easy to get a custom ring done. You find examples of rings you like and present them to a jeweler.
With gold prices what they are and how heavy your ring will be- I don’t really suggest making the whole thing from scratch- but just keep in the back of your head if you see the perfect ring in a sort of bland chunky setting- they can almost always be engraved.

do we hate a three stone?

Some of them have awesome engraving, but I want a single stone!!

You guys are too nice.

I’m gonna look up this custom ring guy next, see how that goes

I looked at David Klass on instagram. I didn't see much filigree or engraving? Should I reach out to him anyway?

I googled custom filigree rings and found Hugo Kohl. They could probably do what I want for around $1500. Not sure how their filigree compares to early 20th century, but maybe it won't matter once I'm distracted by a big ol diamond

This is compelling. Is there relevance to the Belais claim? Does it increase value? I don’t think this ring is worth more than $4000?

But this ring almost validates my original ring. Look at them together. Do we still think the ring with the yellow sapphire is a 1950’s reproduction after seeing this? Hmmm

In reluctant to tell you to do anything with the original ring you posted as I do think trying to replace the stone has a high likelihood of f’ing up the setting.
Maybe someone here can show you an example of a jeweler who’s replaced one of those picture box rings successfully.
And I think both of the rings are from the same era which is probably more mid century than turn of the century.

Markets are volatile now so I mean- anybody can lowball. However the price of scrapping that diamond would almost certainly be better for that jeweler than selling it to you for 5k.

Ok I'll trust you. Makes sense!

I thought the 1.5 carat ring had sapphires on the side. Looking at it this morning, I think it's just engraving. Still a nice ring! So if I can get the 1.5 carat ring for $6k that's a good price?

I used google image search and found this M. So yellow. Nice size though:

They sent me a video, there’s no engraving around the bezel. And M is SO yellow. I love the yellow in my wife’s K. But maybe M is too yellow.

You could replace that sapphire easily with a good high skill jeweler. Belais in that style only matters to Belais fans. That style is not sought after because it’s heavy, appeals to those who want that.

I REALLY like the ring Niel shared with the wheat sheaf engraving (there are no additional stones as far as I can see). I think it would be 1930s, with that type of engraving. The M you found I think is slightly later mabe 1940s, the diamond is yellow but many people like that, you might too. Stone looks lively. I really like that one too.

For a ring you really like, I’d make an offer but be prepared to pay full price. $1,000 would be almost what you’d pay for “retro-fitting” the Belais ring with the sapphire, eg. engraving plus re-setting/pronging.

Wow. I love it. Is $5k a price they’d accept? Is it worth $6k? I really like the gems on the side. Sapphire slivers? We think it’s definitely pre 1935?

1.5 carat OEC would be maybe $5,000 on its own depending on color/clarity. Solid heavy 18k gold setting, at least $1000. Engraving, fairly costly.

I looked at the video. The center of this diamond has fisheye (dead space). I’m usually pretty tolerant of antique cuts but I think you could get a better cut. Also, possibly not an M. Possible O-P.

I just went to a jewelry store and anything under 1.5ct is just too small. 1.5ct is a suitable size for my hand. But 2ct actually has some wow factor. When I'm dead, a 2ct will be valued by family - whether they want to keep it, repurpose it, or sell it.

Also modern diamonds in modern jewelry stores seem so lifeless. If I was a kid shopping in one of those stores I'd probably get a lab grown. Modern jewlery stores aren't really selling "rings." They're selling solitaire diamonds on top of a circle of gold. But to each their own
