Khalil Mahmoud

I have so much more to say to Nala but decided it is not worth it.
What she wrote was very disappointing but unfortunately not too surprising and if she really feels that way I am done talking to her.
I have to laugh because I actually know students on campus who told me exactly what happened and is happening and yet Nala knows best. Yeah. Anything to discredit the facts. Because it does not fit her narrative

I know college students too. And Jewish ones. They attend UCI. And they did not feel threatened.

When one's history includes this Screenshot 2025-03-15 at 11.05.41 AM.png it's understandable that one would get a bit twitchy about physical harassment and death threats. Give the students some grace. Generational trauma is real.

So protesting in favor of Palestine equates this picture. Got it. I guess this is one way of pacifying Missy’s narrative and staying on her good side.

Back to the protest.

Imo, universities who do not respond at all or respond insufficiently to campus protests be they violent or peaceful should be held accountable by their students, faculty, and their state and the federal government should stay out of it. Students should not be prevented from getting access to the education they paid for because of on-campus protests. If protestors engage in hate speech as defined under the Constitution, they should be punished according to the law. Otherwise, they should be able to exercise their free speech within the bounds of the law.

The topic here is about the right to protest. Which all of you should be threatened to lose. That is all. This is not about Palestine vs Israel.

How long before criticism of our government is considered deportable?

^As of Dec. 8, 2024.
Rules here don't permit me to post the article because it involves a politician who won the last election. PBS News Hour is the source I used, there are others.

Has it occurred to you that YOU ARE TOO biased to actually consider other views???? You are even applauding our president. Wow. Not worth discussing with you. FWIW, I have said it sooo many times. I am not pro Gaza! I am not pro anything. That does not make me an anti-Semite.

I don’t totally disagree with you. You are a very passionate person in the causes you believe in. I will admit I don’t always understand the depth of passion in all of it, but I respect your right to your beliefs and feelings. Just don’t go away thinking that the rest of us don’t care or have chosen sides for or against just to alienate others. If there was a simple solution, we could all agree. I am truly sickened by the atrocities and my heart aches for the losses and the mental anguish yet to come for so many.

Thank you. And I feel the same. I feel it to the depth of my core. Any death. Makes me ill. Also what no one has mentioned (and I understand for most this is not important the way it is to me) is the way Hamas shot and killed all the pets.
I mean there is no limit to the depth of their evil. Killing all the dogs and cats in the villages :(

You're off base. I was addressing the specific issue of Jewish students feeling unsafe and why they might feel that way. See post #123 if you want my opinion about campus protests. And get this straight Nala, I don't give a rat's behind about being on anyone's good side on an internet forum.

I am not saying you are. Did I say that anywhere? I am certainly not applauding our president. Do I agree with some of his actions? Yes. He got more hostages out. He said what needed to be said. I respect that. But I am not a fan of his at all. As with all elections, for me, it is the lesser of two evils. And in this case we had very poor candidates. IMO

To answer your other question. No. I am 100% sharing facts and keeping my emotion out of this as best as I can. What you wrote about exaggerating what happened on campuses is incorrect Nala.

I know college students too. And Jewish ones. They attend UCI. And they did not feel threatened.

I was writing specifically about Columbia and Barnard. Not all college campuses because I do not have direct knowledge of all college campuses. But what happened here was UNACCEPTABLE.

Additionally students who paid tuition were unable to attend classes. Again unacceptable. How would you feel if you paid 80,000 a year and could not attend classes? Or if this was happening to your daughter? I am guessing you would be singing a different tune

The right to protest. PEACEFULLY. I support 100%.
Not OK with physical harassment and threatening to do bodily harm etc

It's good practice to back up statements with links to corroborating sources in order to prevent opinions from disputing the facts. It also stops discussions from straying outside the bounds of Ella's patience so it can continue. Just a suggestion.

I really respect you @missy and I want you to know that I am not oblivious to this conflict. My husband’s boss is Jewish. He just got back from Israel. He visits at least twice a year. He tells me that he views all Palestinians as Hamas and that they should all be blown up. He tells me that all Muslims want anyone who is not a Muslim dead.
I would call that being very biased while I venture to guess that you would call it being very aware.

Flip side. My DD has friends who are Muslim. And they are loving, bright young people who would never espouse the beliefs that my husband’s boss claims of all Muslims.

So what to believe? What to stand up for? Sometimes the best offense is to stay out of it bc at the end of the day, we don’t know all the facts. It is too hard to trust the news. We are all too smart to accept that everything reported is actually a fact.

My reality: previous liberal Jewish friends are now applauding our new President when in 2016 they were kicking and screaming about the election. They are turning a blind eye to anything he does bc of his support of this one conflict (which will leave him and his buddies even richer after they create their luxury resort; Talk about the wrong motivation.) And truth be told, this is what really scares me. But I am not sitting here Implying everyone is a racist bc they are not protesting that Latinos are being deported or that the president wants to redefine what legal citizenship is. Never mind that “illegal Alien” and “alien” have now become socially acceptable terms as commercials threaten to deport anyone here illegally who does not register with DOH. Let’s not talk about my transgender friends, lgbqt community—oh and no longer recognizing Black History Month. I mean. My friend was a liberal but now none of this matters bc our new president is pro Israel.

I would but we’re not allowed to share external links including videos which are most illuminating.

I appreciate this Nala. Thank you.
It’s a very challenging situation. One for which I truly see no solution. I keep praying people smarter than me will figure it out.

I care about everyone. Not just the plight of the Jews. It’s just right now this is front and center for me. And I truly believe we’re all at risk if Israel loses.

A million times this. This should be handled by the university administration and possibly the local police department. And now there’s a letter that’s being sent to Columbia and one of the terms in order to maybe get their funding back is academic receivership (basically taking all the power away from the chair and putting it in the hands of the government ) for several departments and they all happen to be departments involving certain ethnicities. Disgusting.

HI,
I rejoined pricescope just so I could reply to this thread.. The topic was this Kalil fellow who I personally would like kicked out of our country. Since when are people allowed to yell FIRE in a theatre? Thats illegal. He was instrumental in construction of the illegal encampments at Colombia and obstructed the police instructions to remove such encampments' It is the job of the University to control their campuses, not the Gov't. The universities have failed in this somehow mistaking these protests as similar to the Viet Nam War. Kalil go home- take those people (Yes I said it) in Minn with you. That being said I say Both Hamas and Isreal have behaved horrifically and I say "a POX on both their houses." Hamas is a terrorist organization and the 70% of the Palestinians support Hamas(militariy arm). The attacks on Isreal are relentless. This must stop.

On the other hand Isreal has been convicted of War Crimes at the Hague. They are committing genocide upon the Palestinians. The facts are Hamas , so far, has not carried out its mission to eliminate Isreal. but Isreal has acted to eliminate the Palestinians. Of that there can be no mistake. "The Israeli Jews are doing to the Palestiians what was done to them in World War !!. For the average American student this fact is the outrage.

The time has past for the same old weary solutions. No-one wants the Palestinians. I don't blame them. I propose a variation of the two state plan. We create a new border, with sea access, so trade can develop for a new economy. It will be a land lease for 5075 years , in which time the Palestinians could develop a new state. This would be conditioned on no more attacks or war mongering. If they can do it, the land will become their land and new home. The must live peacefully. If they dont--I haven't gotten that far in my peace plan.

A peace plan must be a win win situation. Give Isreal the wEst Bank and Gasa. Make new borders on a Land lease program. We need new Ideas and two new Gov'ts in charge. Isreal must defend against those war crimes. Hamas MUST STAY UNARMED.

This is enough for now My hero is Mahatama Gandi. Even he couldn't keep a unified India. Just my 2 cets. May the insanity stop. Goodbye Kalil!

Annette

Thank you. Ella removed a few posts that included links with videos stating external links to social media are not allowed. I’m trying to stay within the rules and not make even more work for Ella. I feel bad she has all this extra stress but appreciate she’s allowing us to continue the discussion. If I find something I feel is within the guidelines to share I will.

putting it in the hands of the government

Everyone who voted for the winner chose an authoritarian government and everyone who didn't vote abetted that choice. It's ironic that the democratic process of voting led us to where we are. Since I can't be totally honest about this without getting banned, I'll just say that I'm content to watch them reap what they sowed. The rest of us have no option other than to gut it out however unpleasant and damaging it becomes. Change is still possible at the mid-terms.

This has become a thread featuring a handful of people debating something off-topic. The ME is such an explosive and divisive issue - and always has been- I think for our own sakes we should stop because it's not going to end well.

I mean, sh!t. The tension here is palpable, and we've "known" each other for so long. It's sad, frustrating, disgusting, and pathetic what's happening, and I don't just mean on this thread. Given our interactions, we are truly f*cked.

Climate change is predicted to make the region uninhabitable by 2050 which makes the argument about whose ancestors were there first and whose land is whose and who should live where darn ironic.

@suling Annette I am glad to see you back (maybe that seems weird to say given the volatility of this thread?).

Those feelings about Khalil are not invalid, but I think a lot of us are trying to point out is that if he has done something worthy of deportation then let it play out in court. The admin is acting above the law. And has been doing it since day 1.

Folks, stay on topic. This thread should not be a debate on Israel versus Hamas. Discuss the specific situation, human rights in general, etc. No more debate about politics, US or otherwise.

Back on track.
Breaking:
Alien Enemies Act of 1798
Wartime powers have just been enacted. It has only been used 3 times in our history.
1812, WWI and WWII. Officially declaring war on immigrants using Venezuela as impetus.

* same act was used to justify the Japanese internment.

Historical efforts to make wartime powers into peacetime immigration enforcement have never succeeded in the courts. I’d be surprised if he succeeds in getting this enacted.

We'll see. I honestly can't prognosticate anything anymore. I just don't know.

Okay, back on the due process topic. What about this doctor living for 6 years and studying and working in the U.S. and recently working in Rhode Island. Dr. at Brown and RI hospital. Part of the transplant team. Went home to Lebanon for the first time in 6 years to see family. Got an H-IB visa good until 2027 at the American consulate in Lebanon. She was stopped from coming back into the U.S. and told she was being deported. A federal judge tried to stop it while her plane was sitting on the tarmac, but the plane took off (I heard on the news they sent her to Paris). Is this due process? She was put on a plane pretty much immediately and no one seems to know why. This was at Logan airport in Boston, the airport that I use. I haven't seen anything yet that is accusing her of anything.

The H-1B program allows employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in the U.S. on a nonimmigrant basis in specialty occupations or as fashion models of distinguished merit and ability. A specialty occupation requires the theoretical and practical application of a body of specialized knowledge and a bachelor's degree or the equivalent in the specific specialty (e.g., sciences, medicine, health care, education, biotechnology, and business specialties, etc.).

A judge has halted the deportation of those in custody and scheduled a hearing on the 21st. He even ordered that planes already in the air carrying deportees return to the US.

This administration is a boon to the earning power of attorneys who probably spend a lot of their hard earned money on antacids.
