Khalil Mahmoud

A judge has halted the deportation of those in custody and scheduled a hearing on the 21st. He even ordered that planes already in the air carrying deportees return to the US.

This administration is a boon to the earning power of attorneys who probably spend a lot of their hard earned money on antacids.

Good. The center must hold.

A green card holder tortured at Logan Airport. They "pressured" him to give up his green card. What's going on there?

Rhode Island is losing doctors fast. Deporting one will only make things worse.

You are exaggerating the damage that was inflicted on Jewish students.

Missy is not exaggerating. Were you there? Was your son, daughter, niece nephew subjected to the threats…..prevented from attending class or using facilities? My niece was, and fragile she isn’t. She confronted the dean of students demanding protection and was offered incompletes. She wanted to get to her exams. Missy is spot on.

My former students were and I indicated which university. So NOT All universities protests resulted in the same outcomes—therefore that is exaggerating. You can say, in a few universities, a few students, etc. but to paint all university protests as such is exaggerating. And also, I did watch some of these protests on the news from the day they began. They were peaceful. They got out of hand when the other organizations counter protested.

@Hi,

I went to a city University in the 1960s, during radical changes in social constructs of our society.. The thinking on first amendment rights had a different meaning then it appears now.

There was a communist newsletter called the daily worker that some students handed out weekly or monthly, outside the university gates. These people were not allowed on campus. It was not considered their first amendment right to promote communist ideology on campus. The University made the rules and we all abided with them.

I admit I have said this before. Of course we need to follow due process , but this notion that so many things are "our rights" seem to keep expanding in the minds of many people. In my mind it is more important to hold the University accountable than to blame the Gov't. This is how tyranny begins.

I wrote to my Senator and received an email back. Have those people who have affiliations with Columbia written or spoken to them about their failure. This situation is not about first amendment rights. or perhaps rights at all.

Always demanding "rights". Sorry folks-- responsibilities' matter .

Annette

Public universities are legally bound to permit protests on campus property but they can determine where the protests are held. When I worked at a public uni, we designated the area in front of the student union because its location didn't interfere with students being able to access their classes yet the protests weren't hidden from view.

Private universities have it easier -- they aren't bound by 1st amendment protections in that they can limit offensive speech in ways a public university cannot.

The responsibility for ensuring protests stay within the bounds of the law for public and private unis rests solely on the shoulders of campus administrators. The responsibility of using their free speech rights responsibly rests solely on the shoulders of the students.

I thought this was a clear, well-written article focusing on the implications this case has for immigration law and that it should present concerns to those of us who are not immigrants. The author is an immigration lawyer.

Thank you. My favorite quote from the piece:

“It does not matter if you approve of Khalil’s views. It does not matter if you support the Israelis or the Palestinians. It does not matter if you are a liberal or a conservative. It does not even matter if you voted for Trump or Kamala Harris. If the state can deprive an individual of his freedom just because of his politics, which is what appears to have happened here, then no one is safe. You may believe that Khalil does not deserve free speech or due process. But if he does not have them, then neither do you. Neither do I.” —Adam Serwer, The Atlantic

On a related note, The Voice of America was given the hatchet on Friday because the president doesn't like what it says.

They defied the order. Why am I not surprised. We are so f*cked.
It might not be as bad as it seems this time.

U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg issued an order Saturday blocking the deportations but lawyers told him there were already two planes with immigrants in the air — one headed for El Salvador, the other for Honduras. Boasberg verbally ordered the planes be turned around, but they apparently were not and he did not include the directive in his written order.

“Oopsie…Too late,” Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, a Trump ally who agreed to house about 300 immigrants for a year at a cost of $6 million in his country’s prisons, wrote on the social media site X above an article about Boasberg’s ruling. That post was recirculated by White House communications director Steven Cheung.

I read the article. Totally unacceptable, it’s correct that we should be encouraging medical workers, not doing this to them. I hope this story goes viral. Just so everyone knows, police brutality like this has been going on locally for years. I know someone who was swept up into a county prison system for a moving violation. It was similar treatment. Another case in my county was publicized and it was similar, and ended in tragedy. But it’s unacceptable that a federal agency would be allowed to do this too. Americans should be aware that this is also happening to citizens, for years.

It’s a good solution to have protest guidelines in place. One, so students can feel heard and two, so they are protected and others are protected. Win win.

I think public universities like UCLA that let protests get totally out of hand should be sued, and administrators and campus police held to public scrutiny and account.

UCLA Admin and campus police allowed outside groups to enter campus, interact, mingle with and manipulate (one group) and attack (the other group) students. They let outsiders along with students camp and block access to academic buildings that all students had to use. These outsiders and “counter outsiders” made the protests and counter protests extremely dangerous for everyone, including students and uninvolved students; all manners of protest were blatantly allowed to happen.

The LA District, County, and campus police watched and let this happen, like they wanted it to happen.

I'm extremely concerned about the major networks/websites not covering what is happening. They aren't covering the major protests and marches taking place (anyone see the Veteran's marches on the news?) There's nothing about the individuals being targeted. What I've seen has come from Canadian and UK sources.
WHAT is happening?!?!?!?

Actually, it is. They admitted that they ignored it because the plane was “over international waters” which is not even how international waters works. You don’t suddenly become governed by thr laws of whatever country you’re flying over. If you’re on a US flight it’s US Law until you enter the destination country and pass immigration checks.

God, we need three separate with the mayhem that’s going on.

Edit – I don’t think it’s clear yet that there may have been a plane that took off after the order in which case we are dealing with complete contempt of court. But what’s frightening is that if nothing consequential happens then it’s carte blanche to do whatever. I hate all of this.

Oligarchy owns the media, almost all of it, and the misnomer that it's a 'liberal' group is incorrect.

They deported one of our transplant surgeons(out of Brown)in defiance of the court order. Several articles about it.

Are you referring to the one I posted an article about in post #149 or has there been another one?

MSM is fast becoming useless. BlueSky has sources that are informative. It's necessary to read many sources, liberal/conservative/far out to get a rounded view of current events. Perhaps you might find this useful: https://www.allsides.com/media-bias/media-bias-chart

Yep, must have missed that. The very one.

The posts regarding the legal issues in this thread are brilliant and warranted. Unfortunately, the posts that identify certain ethnicities are unwarranted and distasteful, and for me the purest form of racism.
My husband and I have five very close friends who are Israeli Jews, they live in Australia and travel to Israel often. One of the couple’s daughter is engaged to a lovely Palestinian man so, as you could imagine the situation for them is heartbreaking on all levels.
We recently saw an Australian stage production about RBG, her life, her loss and her success in changing laws to create equality. We are all human and we all deserve the dignity of being regardless of our culture.
Ps I don’t condone terrorist organisations

I heard on the news this morning that they sent her back to Lebanon. Kind of hard to believe. I still haven't heard any reasons for them doing so. There was a court order blocking her immediate removal from the country. There is a hearing in Boston today. When this first happened they had sent her to Paris which may have been before the judges order was issued however the judge said he had received a "detailed and specific" timeline of the events from an attorney working on her behalf that raised "serious allegations" about whether his order was violated.

Seems like they are trying to put some of these deportees on airplanes to get them out of the country before court orders issue and then claim lack of jurisdiction. I'll be keeping an eye on the hearing today.

I sure hope that those waiting for transplants at Rhode Island Hospital are not impacted by this. I have no idea how many back up transplant surgeons they might have to fill her spot on the team.

There is supposed to be hearing today. It’s so terrible. I can’t believe there’s not more coverage on this one. There are so many fires that it’s hard to know which one to focus on.

Well, I'm hoping that the local news will cover it more since it's happening in my neck of the woods.

The fact that anyone can have such a staunch “so be it” stance amidst this injustice and human suffering is mind boggling. We are so doomed. I hope aliens take us all out. In the meantime, Free Palestine.

I hate to be a Debby downer…as if there’s any reason to be joyous right now….
But for those who cheer on this deportation-and things like “let’s move them to Africa”…..
What do you think the reaction across the world will be? Do you think this will lessen terrorists motivation?
Do you think actions like this will cause reasonable countries to have more or less reason to defend Palestinian causes?
Yay he’s gone! Be careful what you wish for.
There’s no one who loves or defends Israel more than me.

That's the ultimate outcome; chaos, deprivation and scapegoating are the most effective tool for subjugation. People who are in desperate need will be impacted in every facet of life.
