Sliced toast...like a little army to attack the egg...

ETA: can you tell I am bored and lonely?

Well I already ate some tater tots...and now I think I''ll pop a frozen dinner into the microwave! It''s an Amy''s brand organic frozen dinner so I don''t think it''s too terrible for me. Right guys?!

I guess I''m just working on putting on my usual winter coat!
40.gif
I don''t have time to be healthy right now because I have so much school work and I''m now only playing soccer once a week because my outdoor season ended. So...I need to get back into shape after my next week of exams are over!

We actually had a good dinner. FI got a deer last week so we had fresh butterfly steaks with gravy, chicken flavored rice, and asparagus.

I''m still learning to cook, and can never think of new things to make, so we end up having boxed meals and things like that most of the time.

I hope you enjoyed your egg and soldiers!

I''m home alone at the moment, but FI is off at 7 so I''m going to put on a pot of spaghetti. Practicing my wifey skills

My boyfriend is the only other person I''ve ever heard talk about ''egg and soldiers''--I thought ''soldiers'' was a British thing (the boyf is English)! Hmph. Well, wherever it''s from, I think it''s an adorable name. Think I''d be more inclined to play with my food than eat it.
37.gif

What happened with your oatmeal this morning, by the way? Success?

Oi, no success. It went from hard horse food to wallpaper paste. I think I am going to have to go with the instant type for microwave rather than the original...

Well, FI and I found out last night that one of our good friends is now, randomly, working as a pizza delivery guy (this guy is the KING of random jobs that he seems to do just for kicks! haha).

Soooo we're ordering from his pizzeria and hoping he's our delivery guy

I've been a very successful cook-at-home "wife" for the past three weeks so it's about time for a break!!

That''s a bummer, babe. I too tried a few times to make original oatmeal, but to no avail. Now I don''t even remember what the original kind tastes like, so if I am sacrificing anything by doing the instant, I am blissfully unaware.

Hubby is away on business. I had my old stand by, a Wawa Hoagie, shortie. Ham and cheese.

And all this is why cream of wheat is AMAZING. I love me some good oatmeal, but nothing beats the ease of cream of wheat...

I should try cream of wheat again. Last time I had it (yeeears ago), the texture reminded me a bit of baby food, which put me off it.

Don''t forget to get instant oatmeal as a back-up! Happy shopping!

Mr. § asked for poached eggs on toast. So, did I serve him eggs on soldiers? I had a cup of starbucks chocoate cocoa. Peppermint. Have you tried this miracle stuff? It is chunks of chocolate and you melt it and add milk. I use almond milk. Anyway...woo hoo! Yumminess off the charts. But there are so many cals and carbos and sugar I can''t eat again for a week. Thats ok...it is that good! §

Oooooh, Wawa...yum yum. I haven''t had a Wawa sub in forever, and it would have been such a good plan for tonight''s lazy dinner! Too late now, but there''s always tomorrow

OOhh la la...that sounds fabbo! I wonder if hot chocolate stirred with a candy cane would suffice?

So, what''s new with you §

Nope, it has to be a boiled egg and your toast has to be cut into slices......at least in Ireland it does anyway, if it''s to be considered a soldier

I love a grilled cheese or fried egg sammie!
18.gif
Sometimes I just make soup. hehee

if you get cream of wheat...make sure to add a tablespoon of brown sugar yum. it's too bland plain, and don't get instant, it's not the same taste wise as the regular. i get the 2 minute one for cooking (doesn't even take 2 minutes really!!)....i have tried 1 minute, instant, and 2 min and 2 min for me is the best. also you can put more or less water to get it thicker or thinner. i like it a little on the thicker side. let it cook a little longer to get it thicker too. drop in brown sugar, let cool, done! make toast with some butter on it, dip into cream of wheat. TASTY. mmm that'd be great for dinner.

last nite's dinner we were out at xmas in the park, so we shared a gourmet cheeseburger with tillamook cheddar, wedge salad with bleu cheese, tomatoes, bacon, and a crab and shrimp ceviche appetizer at a local tasty grill's lounge.

so what is this soldier thing, you cut up toast and what? prop it on the egg?
33.gif

when we do lazy dinners it consists typically of grilled cheese with red pepper tomato soup from TJ's...or campbells bean and ham with grilled cheese & turkey. or egg whites scrambled with 2% cheese and some turkey or chicken sausage, english muffin. yum. i love breakfast for dinner sometimes.

IWP, making oatmeal is pretty easy...And if you can make eggs you can make oatmeal! I''d suggest getting the steel cut Irish oats..they sell them in a tin canister. Just follow the directions on the can and you should be fine. Steel cut oats are more "crunchy" in texture...when cooked they sort of "pop" in your mouth when you chew them, way better, IMO, than rolled oats which can get gluey. Give steel cuts a try...I think you''ll love them. A little maple syrup is wonderful on them...

Iwanna...the peppermint stick in cocoa works...but it is my theory after using this chunk of Starbucks stuff...that any chocolate bar could work in a pinch. Think of Andes candies....or hershey bar...anyway you chip it into small melt-able size...(and then add crushed peppermint if you desire) and get three tablespoons heaping to 6 oz of milk, soy, almond what eva...oh you melt the chocolate with a tablespoon of milk for 30 seconds or so and get it creamy then add the 6oz of milk pop back into micro...and report back here. Lets see if any chocolate will work!

Thanks for the solider info. Got it now. The little egg slices are the soldiers. I mad hubby a fluid poached egg...nothing noble about that....yuk.

Mara...I like Malto Meal instead of Cream of Wheat. Have you tried that? §

OMG - Kaleigh! I LOVE Wawa''s hoagies (and well, their coffee too). NYC does not have Wawa so, everytime I go home to PA, I have to stop and get a hoagie and some coffee to take back with me.

Yep, its a British/colonial thing (I''m in Oz) as my grandmother always used to make us a boiled egg with soldiers... I always order them when we go out for breakfast. Guess I''ve never grown up!!

Ok kids...I was totally confused. I asked every one over 40 if they knew what soldiers

and eggs or egg soldiers were as away from PS I couldn''t remember the term.

None of my questioners could say they had heard of it.

So I came back and read this thread again and one says the soldiers are the egg and the others says it is the bread...well I couldn''t just go on with out getting to the bottom of this nuttiness...so I googled it
34.gif
. Lookie what I found...

Video really ...a SOLDIER video that shows you how to make this army thing. Well, I can go on now...thankfully.

Iwanna...this thread drove me nutts. I realize you were just quizzing us on what we were eating...but that term of soldiers just drove me batty
emvamp.gif
. I was in bed last night trying to figure it out. Couldn''t close my eyes
23.gif
...that is consumed huh? Look, next time you are going to have eggs and toast, would you just say eggs and toast? I would be so grateful!

Love ya! §

I''m eating alone too! Except BF is still taking a nap...SO that leaves me to have costco leftovers with spaghetti.

And I totally second Cream of Wheat, oh man it''s the best. I''ve never really liked oatmeal, but Cream of Wheat is beyond wonderful.

No, you have to make Cream of Wheat with milk, not water! Thats the way my dad always made it, it took me years to realize people ever used water. So much creamier with milk! And then add honey--yummy! And yeah, the instant is weird, I always stuck with the regular stuff.

Door Knob--I agree I like Malto Meal better than Cream of Wheat too!

Also, those steel cut oats are great. If you have a crockpot, you can make steel cut oats that are ready in the morning. Just put in the water & oats before you go to bed...and voila! instant breakfast in the morning. I like to put peach yogurt & dried apricots on my steel cut oats.
