Oh crap... I just made the mistake of asking FF if he''d heard of women getting men engagement presents... apparently he has and now is planning what he wants now that I have brought it up..

He wants an all-grain system for his home brew (~$500) or a great dane haha.

Digging myself a hole apparently.

Well, on the positive side, if that''s somthing he really wants it might be a push in the right direction for him to propose, and $500 is a small price to pay for that

Haha wouldn''t that be funny... get it for him now... "well I guess you have to propose now hunny since you got your engagement gift..." haha he''d flip

You are all very thoughtful to give your fiances gifts. I just don''t know if I understand the logic in an engagement gift. An engagment ring really isn''t a present. Men give women rings as a symbol of their commitment, and she will wear this ring the rest of her life (hopefully) as a symbol of their union. Women then typically incur a variety of expenses in planning the wedding. And once you are married, you have many other expenses to consider. To me, it is just odd that so many on here think they should give their fiance an expensive gift to mark the engagement. I don''t see an engagement as a tit for tat sort of thing. Isn''t your agreeing to be his wife present enough. Now, a small, thoughtful gift - I can understand that. I just know that if I gave my fiance anything more than a small gift, he would be angry with me for spending unnecessary money on him.
Hi Monkeyprincess.
As you said men give women a ring as a symbol of commitment.
Any of my friends that gave their man an engagement gift was to mark a fantastic occasion and they did so because they wanted to, not because they felt they had to IYKWIM....

Thanks for your imput and to all others who replied.

Calisto your so funny :)

Sorry, I didn''t mean to be controversial. By all means get your guy a present if that is what you want to do. I guess I''m just a little more traditional.

I told my BF to let me know when he starts saving for the ring, and I''ll start saving for the honeymoon! That way we can take the extravagant honeymoon that I really really want and he doesn''t have to worry about saving up for two ridiculously expensive things back-to-back.

I really wanted to get him something as a symbol of our enagment, and I thought a nice watch would be a great idea but he wasn''t keen on the idea as he doesn''t usually wear a watch and he also wasn''t keen on anything else either. So as another idea, I instead offered to pay for our wedding bands and he was happy with this gesture.

I guess the reason I wanted to get something is because I believe a relationship should be reciprocal and I would not feel comfortable with recieving an expensive ering without giving something in return - even it''s only a token something.
