Well technically not the first. My first-ever piece of jewelry (I was 12!) was a Victorian ring with two tiny rubies, so perhaps there is a theme?
Anyways I've been looking for a loose unheated ruby in the 1-1.5ct range. I try to stick with my budget of 4-5k for the stone and setting, which proved really hard, especially given how ruby price has been skyrocketing. While I loved reading and learning from other amazing PSers' search for rubies, my head started to spin every time I tried to figure out which aspect (clarity, color, origin etc) I should comprise for my modest budget.

I then decided to change my approach and search for antique ruby rings instead. I'm still in the return window for it but I think I found the one within budget! It's a French Art Deco dome ring made in platinum with single cuts.

The ruby is approx. 1.2ct unheated, good clarity. It's a saturated deep red without noticeable modifiers. It's definitely a look far from what many of us here on PS would consider ideal, and not what I started out looking for, but I think it's got its own magic! The color is actually quite accurate in the vendor's photo:

PS. Sorry not sorry about my sacrilegious green nails :lol-2:. Promise next time I'll have Rouge Noir on to match the vibe!

And it's geographical origin is unknown! Any guesses?
It's not a typical Burma color. It's got medium fluorescence, not as strong as my Jedi spinel. It appears that it has some iron that quenches part of the fluorescence from chromium.

It was set in the 1920s long before African rubies were mined. My bet is on Thai :)

Oh I love this! What a beautiful red! :kiss2: Enjoy!!

It's a lovely shade and the bombe mounting is a perfect frame, it sends the eye *there*.
Personally, I love these journeys; in the end while searching for the allusive ephemeral perfection you found your perfection.:kiss2:

It’s gorgeous!!! Enjoy. I have a gorgeous Thai ruby.

Stunning!! Wow. I love the ruby, the ring… all of it. Gorgeous!

So jealous...

It seems like a great value for a stone and ring that check all those boxes! Good work -- and enjoy!

I love it but I personally love old jewelry.

HI:

Stunning. This bombe style is a fav of mine. Congrats!

cheers--Sharon

It's gorgeous!! Congrats on finding the one. Art Deco and ruby, can it get any better?

Since you mention return period, unheated, and origin-
Did this come with an independent lab report?

I’m not trying to talk you out of loving the ring, nor debate it or wish to devalue happiness.
It’s a beautiful ring! I absolutely see the appeal.

I’m just curious about rings sold with such descriptions, but nothing is publicly said about independent lab reports by the vendor. This is nothing unusual - it happens and I see it frequently . Whether sometimes there is really a lab report, or sometimes there is none and it’s simply the vendors estimate - who knows what the percentage is of who does what.

No it does not have a lab report at this moment but I'm sending it out to GIA for a cert! It's from a vendor I trust and I discussed this openly with them beforehand :)

Thank you! I thought a bombe ring would be too much but this is actually perfect!

You aren’t asking for opinions on what to be aware/cautious on for (aside from the GIA cert) - and honestly it’s more of a curiosity on my end, so I won’t go digging in that pile.

I honestly am happy with your happiness in your find. :)

Maybe CS /estate jewelry should have separate areas like diamond does on what’s known for accepting questions vs what’s there for only compliments. :)

No worries at all! I'm totally open to questions. I try to be cautious with my purchase too and am curious to find out if it's as described & its origin

At what $point would you be unhappy with if you had to pay for restoration to secure the melee for general safety if wear? And restoration over general repair - so hopefully it keeps the delicate original look?

And you mentioned good clarity. In the vendors up skirt photos - If something is going on with the pavilion as in damage as it sure looks to be ….. would that change your outlook? I’m not sure the GIA report would address that aspect at all.

Again, I think the ring is a beauty!

So far the melees feel secure, and the ring looks to be well-preserved. I'm actually taking it to a local estate jewelry dealer/appraiser today, they are very knowledgeable in terms of antique jewelry so hopefully I will find out! (also to confirm that it is a period piece)

The pavilion had some gunk on it when I got it. I cleaned it with a cotton swab and was relieved that it's all good!

Thank you for your compliments!

It's simply smashing! LOVE IT :kiss2::kiss2::kiss2:

Love it!!!

Playing with the fluorescence a bit more, here's a comparison with two small rubies (left) and a Jedi spinel (mid):

the ring is off on its way to gia to see if it confirms my guess that the ruby is Thai :)

Well, this has finally happened to me. I shipped it out to the GIA lab in NYC with USPS priority (time-sensitive). It reached the destination post office, went out for delivery, and disappeared in thin air. After calling that post office three days in a row, I'm losing hope. I need to vent, not the update people want to see, I know:(

Oh no I'm so sorry to hear that. Was it insured?

It could still turn up! We have parcels that just float around the system here and apparently 99% of them turn up, just not on time!

What does the tracking number say? Fingers crossed that it's only delayed. Usps is really really good about taking care of the packages.
