My Oval.

www.JewelsbyEricaGrace.com

Talk about an impact piece! Each rose cut diamond is bezeled and milgrained, with pave-set diamond melee on the basket, which lends a little flair and whimsy to the clean and modern design.

2.07ctw of oval rose cuts, with each stone measuring between 5.5 to 6mm x 3.90 to 4.65mm. Color is estimated as J, clarity is VS/SI. Palladium, size 6 and fully sizable.

This is from their site right now, I really love the side of this but with engraving, mixed with the Astin 3 stone. I think just having my center stone made this way could be really pretty too with the heavy milgrain all my itself.

so maybe like a bezel Julia with millgraining on the bezel?

Umm, yes, maybe, I think. I do kindof like the idea of the three stone ring, but that means I have to buy two oval diamonds for the sides, which would probably cost a lot??
I"m so confused, I really don't know what the hell I'm doing now. I love all of the dang rings from JbEG I just don't know what I really really want.

(throw in a CAD design and I think our threads would almost be exactly the same, now I'm staring to understand where you are coming from)

The Julia in first picture but with the milgrain around the top like the five stone ring. Do you think an oval would look good with the Julia setting? If I just had the heavy milgrain around the top of the bezel what would be where the pave is in this picture? Would engraving look good, or would pave be a good idea so I could match it with a pave band, or just plain?

you know im not sure what would be around the edge if you didnt have the pave. I dont know if jbeg could do any engraving on the band or not. I do think it would look good with an oval though

I like it with the pave, I just don't like the top part and seeing the bezel plain.

Probably not for you but its so cool.

Wait till you see the ring I saw today, you will get a kick out of it, it reminds me of this. LOL so funny, you are freaking good!!!

I checked with where I bought my oval diamond to see about exchanging it for a round. They said it is possible, so now I am trying to decide if this is something I really want to do in order to get that setting from Timeless Designs, I know I should wait to hear from them before going to this extreme, but I thought I would just check my options.

I am very very confused.

Bah I'm sorry! I hope whatever you do will make you happy!

Maybe you understand how I am feeling about this? I love my oval but I also really love that setting, I just spoke to TImeless Designs they are getting a few rings ready to email me to show me some options.
Have you had any regrets with getting rid of your pear?

From time to time just because I was a little emotionally attached to it though. Do you regret getting rid of your first round?

A little, only because now I could have put it in this setting and I think it would have been pretty. But I did want a larger stone, which even if I do get another round diamond I still want it larger than what I had, it was a 1.01.
Plus my husband said not to long ago he missed the diamond he gave me :(sad

After looking at this melee chart I am staring to question the size needed for my halo.

Does anyone know the size of Metromoms halo?

Thanks

I prefer .5 pointers and wouldn't go higher than 1 pointers.

metromom's oval is 2.02ct.... mine is 1.23ct with .5 pointer melee in the halo. So I suspect her melee to be maybe 1pointers. I agree with Niel ... smaller melee give a daintier halo, giving the center stone more oresence. The larger the melee in the halo, the more they start to swallow up the center. I have read about people even wishing to have used smaller melee.

I think I would like half or one pointers, maybe even 1.5 depending on the advice of the designer. The chart made me realize how small the half pointers are. Metromoms ring is very pretty, I just was looking thru for melee pictures and came across it.

I think you would end up unhappy with 1.5 pointers. Unless of course you were going for that floral look like I posted with that sapphire, then you could get away with a large melee.

Good point, I better stick with half pointers or one at the most.

I was just checking out the JbEG settings and I had the idea of the Julia bezel set but with my diamond sideways? I really love all of their settings I am so confused with what I want to do. I'm still waiting to see which diamond I end up with, keep my oval or get a round. (I still really like that baguette ring)

Niel, do you have any updates on your five stone ring? Fi.Z is it completely nuts of me to think of getting rid of my oval?

I'm sending my round off to JA today. Should be done maybe 2 weeks? ;( I don't want to take it off.

I think what would be pretty is the halo you seem to keep being upped to with side baguettes like that three stone, and those have a nice small mill grained bezel too. Then continue the bezel down the shank. Like this pic I'm about to post.

A nice example of millgraining on a plain band.

luvsdmb,

I really appreciate you asking me that question :) When I actually read that you were thinking of going back to a round I felt a bit sad, but kept it to myself because obviously, I am biased since I own an oval and since having it, I really really really love it. Not sure if you knew this, but I was engaged with a radiant (I thought I loved square/rectangle shaped stones at the time) and had it for almost 9 years before trading it in for the oval. I realised that the harsh straight lines of a radiant were not for me... I would LOVE to have an emerald cut someday because I think it is a gorgeous cut, but I always end up loving my oval at the end of the day because the soft rounds shape it really what "does it" for me so the emerald everyday for me would probably not work out.

I was never a round girl... I had always told my boyfriend/fiance/hubby that... I always wanted something different....

It seems like you traded in your 1.01 round because of size? How does the oval feel to you now? Does it still feel small or is the size ok for you? Are you thinking of going back to a round mainly to fit into a setting you've fallen in love with? Would you be getting a larger rounds? Are you working with a limited budget? Do you have a budget for the setting?

I am guessing that since you are considering trading in your oval, that you are not too much in love with it? For myself, my oval was leaps and bounds better than my poorly cut radiant. I remember my jeweler calling my radiant a "dead stone"... the table was HUGE ... it just had a great spread and made it look larger than a 1.03... but it didn't sparkle and seeing the huge table was always bugging me (and this was before I discovered pricescope).

This next ring you are planning... do you see this for long term or do you think you will change again?

The thing is... I think there are tons and tons of beautiful settings out there and we could all probably choose more than 1 but eventually we just have to pick one, right? It is much much harder (I think) to find the right stone for us... so I would do what you were doing... find THE STONE and then find a setting... I am not so sure about finding the setting first....you can always change the setting down the road...but it isn't always easy to find a stone with all the parameters you are looking for within your budget that will sparkle in such a way that would tug at your heartstrings KWIM?

If you really think the shape and sparkle of the round is really what you prefer, then I would go back to a round... but if it is just to fit a setting...I dunno... I really do feel like the oval shows a bit more personality :wink2:

You seem to like a lot of the suggestions that are shown to you... for sure all these pretties are attractive! Maybe you need to just break the choices all down to only your top 3... then stop looking around... stop pricescope-ing (LOL), sit on it and keep looking at those 3 for several days or weeks... and then decide on a setting? (once you've fond a center diamond of course).

I am thinking that maybe you are thinking of going back to the rounds because you love one of the Timeless/ settings that fits the round and haven't found one of their designs for an oval that you think is nice and not sure if they can really do a good job at custom fitting a setting for an oval? And you are hesitating to go with a vendors/designers that is out of town? I totally understand that hesitation... I felt like I had no choice but to work with someone out of town...I think anyone mentioned on Ps would have been better than what I had with my radiant!!

If your budget allows, I would choose a well respected designer mentioned on PS and send my oval to him/her and tell them what you were looking for. These great artists know their jewelry and know how to make beautiful sparklies! JBEg, Steven Kirsch, Leon, Victor Canera... although I have no personal experience with them, they seem to be very solid/consistent with their creations and no doubt would create you a beautiful piece.

I still think that if you kept your oval... added a dainty well made halo.. it would give you the finger coverage that you were longing for... as for the basket and shank... well maybe that is where the designer's expertise could come in!

I am looking forward to seeing what you finally decide. I really hope you do end up with something that you really really love. Also, sometimes your very first original idea of what to want is really what is best for you!!... and then many other option were thrown at you which got you all confused... but honestly, sometimes the very first idea you thought of or wanted if what is best for you.

If you have any other questions/comments please feel free to share!!! :wavey:

Fi.Z

Thank you for the nice response. Here are facts regarding my drama :naughty:

1) I did get rid of my round because of the size, it was to small for my finger. However if I would have seen the Timeless Design ring before I got my oval, I would have been perfectly happy with the size. (that TD ring is really really stunning in person)
2) If I do exchange it back for a round I would want a larger size, maybe up to a 1.5? (not sure about price for this)
3) The size of my oval is perfect! I had no doubt's or questions about it till that damn baguette ring.
4) The next ring I get will be the one and only. I am sick of trying to find "the one" I have changed my mind so many times, I just want a ring that I love!
5) It's been harder finding a setting for my oval than I imagined, I can't even find the right band to go with it just for now.
6) I think Timeless Designs could make a great setting for me, I also think Quest could too.
7) I am scared to death to get a halo, although I love yours I still hesitate for some reason.
8) The Timeless Design ring with the halo that I loved from the picture but did not like in person is why I'm so unsure, I'm afraid every halo will do this in person. And all the stores around here are no help, all of the halos blend with the diamonds for sparkly messes all over the place. (I did find out the melee is 1.1 for that sparkly mess halo, did not find out how it's set)
9) I would prefer to use Timeless Designs because they are somewhat local and would service my ring.
10) Nervous of Quest because of sending it out and in the future if anything happens, if it needs polished, rhodium, sized, I would always have to send it to Quest. Not to mention if it's not checked every six months would they still have a warranty on it.
11) I've checked with main vendors that everyone suggests on here and my budget is just not that big right now.
12) I love JbEG and they are for sure in the running.
13) So far Quest is the best for my budget.
14) As for budget, I don't have a set amount, I'm just waiting to see how my ideas turn into $$$$. (which is scary)
15) If I went to the store (28th I go)and they had an awesome round that works for me, right now I would consider it, but when the time comes I might feel differently.
16) I just don't know how I really really feel. I think I would miss my oval. I am hoping when the day comes, the thought of not having my oval will make me realize that I don't need a round stone.

Thank you for your advice. I'm going to post my details of my oval ring. Maybe getting advice on it would help me. I do know the other day when I was driving I kept seeing that damn black bowtie right over where the shank is, but when I got home it was white and super pretty again. It almost seems likes it's teasing me some days, when I saw the bowtie I was like yeah thats it I need to get rid of it. Does bezel set help with the bowtie thing?
p.s. Had a little "beverage" tonight so if I sound crazy and make no sense blame that. ;)

Here are my stats on my Oval, let me know ladies if I should keep it or consider trading it. I am not a diamond expert

EGL #2506258432

1.50 cts Oval
8.60-6.40 x 3.99 mm.
Depth 62.3%
Table width 54%
Crown Height 16%
Pavilion Depth 43%
Girdle Thickness Medium, Faceted

Polish Very Good
Symmetry Very Good
Culet None

Clarity Grade VS2
Graining Nil
Color Grade I
Fluor None

My thin bezel halo I had made my 8.5mm pear length go to 13mm.... so a halo like that would give you amazing finger coverage. Much more than a 6.5 or 7mm round.

Based on numbers alone, your oval seems well proportioned, but from what I have learned about ovals and fancies in general, the ideal way of choosing them is really by eye. I would think most ovals have at least a slight bowtie. Mine comes and goes just like yours as you described it. The bowtie is the same as the arrows in the round H&A, so a little one is not really a terrible thing! As some people have noticed, Victoria Beckham's large marquise has been photographed with a visible bowtie!

Anyhow... from reading about how u feel about everything, I am thinking that you have found the setting that makes your heart race! The one with the baguettes in the halo.... I admit it is a really beautiful setting... I love baguettes and I can only imagine just how pretty it is in person! Do u know how large the center stone was in the ring when u had tried it on? Since you have already had a round before, I would say go back to the round and get that dreamy setting!! You would then finally have a gorgeous ring and you would keep Timeless as your local go to jeweler. That is probably what I would do :D If you do it this way.... it is all a win, win situation, no? Even though it is a pity letting go of the larger oval, I think deep in your heart the round with that Timeless setting is really for you. IMO, if the oval was really for you, then I think you would have known what you wanted for the oval and you probably would have found it a home by now. By changing your mind so often, I am thinking that it's probably because the oval was not really for you ;)

Wow Niel! 8.5 mm!! Your pear had AMAZING spread! I really wish I was in a position to buy it from u (if u were to sell!) the shape, the spread and the fluo are really really attractive!!!

Maybe luvsdmb can somehow find a larger round with a good spread too? But still maintain the fire and brilliance?

The Timeless Design had a 1 ct. diamond when I tried it on. As you can see from the picture it is quit a large halo and huge finger coverage with just the 1 ct so I guess I don't know what size of round I would want/need. I sent Timeless Designs an email about making something for my oval, I am waiting to see what they think.
I like that fact you gave me your blessing about the baguette ring ;) but for some reason I do get a little sad when I think of trading it. I think because I do love the size of my oval and I am not sure if I will be able to have that with a round.
To be continued.......
p.s. If I did go with this ring (the one on the left) I think I would still like it to be bezel set with milgrain.
