Not sure what to do with this "off-color" spinel...

Hello all,

I recently picked up this spinel from Jim McCormick (such a great guy). It's a little over 2.50ct. and was described as having a "padparadscha" color. It is indeed a mixture of pink and orange, but it doesn't resemble a pad to me. It's not a peach either. I guess I'd call it a "coral" shade. In fact, I'm coining that trade name right now... coral spinel.

It is medium in tone, not too dark like some, and the brilliance is spectacular. It does have a small feather in the top left area, as you can see, and a teeny, tiny window of just a couple of center facets, if I'm being really picky. Anyway, what the heck should I do with it? Who else has some coral spinel?! lol

Welcome to my club, most of my spinels could be called off color!
It's that weird tertiary mix. I feel that way about this round. It's color to the naked eye defies description. I also can't get a truly accurate picture. They're pretty but do no justice, it just looks like a shade of red. The stone is so much more. It really can look exactly like a lit ember in differing stages of smolder. It's red, orange, pink and has tiny yellow flashes sometimes from what I assume is some mask...all at the same time, shifting like layers. It has depth.

I would rock your beautiful coral in a ring for certain, especially because I know I wouldn't see another quite like it.

Oh wow... yours is really unique! Layered and shifty is a great way to describe that color. Mine isn't quite as interesting, and I suspect the color isn't that rare for spinel. But it doesn't have the brown or dark tone I've seen in some for sale. Thank you for the suggestion, my friend! What are you doing with your stone?

This is being advertised as coral spinel. Your stone color is even prettier.

EBF055D9-B664-4D64-88AE-72ABD8DBB73F.jpeg It would look great with diamonds but with that color it could also stand on its own.

That's so cool! I'd never seen one marketed as being coral in color before. (I guess I can't trademark it afterall...

). tee hee

But that's a beautiful look... thank you for the idea! I was thinking maybe two-tone rose and white?

Well just looking at it, mostly
With one headed to college, the other following soon enough and having to get everyone some kind of reliable car it will be awhile I expect. I watch money not only disappear from our accounts, but seemingly dematerialize right out of my hands as well.
I'm just singing on the inside for now:
Some day my ring will cooome, sooooome daaaaaaaaaaaaaaay I'll get me ooooone.
Whistle you birds, g@*#mit!

lol Dematerialize!!

I don't have any kiddies in college (I admire you!), but I can sympathize. I bought my first home not too long ago, and it's kicking me arse. Always something to do. Anyway... I rather like admiring our stones in their cozy little gem jars!

Coral is not a colour that I would pick as it has too much orange in it for my liking.

However, I believe the stone in the original post is nice.

DK :))

Make a Coral centered version of @elle_71125 's clover with calibre cut diamonds ... thought it actually would probably look like a spectacular floral center if it had a green border too

Nice stone. Looks like a more intense Pad color to me if the color in the picture is correct. It is all subjective to the person's color perception. Seen quite a few Sapphires this color get the Pad moniker from major labs.

Looks perfect for a ring in white gold or platinum to offset the color.

I have one of a similar color although much smaller. I love the color though, got it from the lovely Dana at Mastercut. In different lighting it looks more pink or sometimes more orange. I had it set in a Stuller setting, and it’s a candidate for the under $2000 thread. 07F08932-93AA-4F24-B1A0-BBB8EA8FA7AF.jpeg

Depending on how close a metal alloy you can find to color match the spinel........
or totally contrast with it ~

Well the first thing you do with it is draft it into your rainbow thread, as pink ???- but preferably as orange

Oooooo that first design is really quite lovely... I am adding that guy to my list! Does everyone have a carefully curated list tucked away of possible designs for all of their stones? :read:
