Opal Project with M's Opal World!!!!

Oh I love opals and that is such a gorgeous opal! I'm excited for you and can't wait to see it set!!

One thing that's tricky for me when it comes to an opal project is that each one is unique - like no two in Jordy's haul are truly similar in color and pattern! Even though diamonds are hard enough to replace, at the end of the day we are talking about something that is one color and looking at shades of white. Even my other gemstones from Dan stair or Dana - tourmalines, garnets, sapphires, etc are replaceable to an extent because I bought ones that are uniform in color from edge to edge. So it was really important that we hash out - what if my opal breaks during setting?

First of all, I don't find the price point high enough to be worth insuring. And again, i doubt finding a replacement with similar colors will be that easy, so a replacement in "like" ain't happening. This means that if I send the opal to a jeweler in my locale, and they break it while setting, I could be SOL and have to take that loss or they could attempt to replace it. The thing is, I haven't seen similar opal pieces around here...I hadn't seen opals like these until Jordy presented them...

I liked how Jordy and Mrs Jordy's rings came out so Jordy's jeweler was definitely an option to explore. If I go with Jordy's jeweler, what are my remedies if something happens to the opal during setting? Since the jeweler is local to Jordy, if the stone got abraded or nicked, he could polish it back up. He also said that if the stone were to break during setting, he would work with me to find a suitable replacement. If I hated the colors of the opals he had to offer, and the stone broke during setting, I'd get a refund. What? Sold!

If I get the ring and I want to return it, I have 10 business days from the receipt of goods (delivery) to check it out and run it to an appraiser if I want. That sounded reasonable to me.

I purchased a pear shaped crystal opal in Australia many, many years ago. I knew that thinner opals are more difficult to set as they may break. As such, thickness was an important criteria as I knew I was going to have it set back home. Also I tried to get more of a uniform shape (as opposed to a free form) so it would be easier to set too. I had it set in a 14K four prong simple pendant setting with three diamonds just below the bale and above the pointed end of the pear. So it did not take much bench time to set. I love opals and it has given me great pleasure. Can't wait to see your finished ring!

My daughter wants hers set in a simple bezel like @HotPozzum so despite my desire to bling it up - I dont think she is going to let me. I am hoping it will arrive here next week. Fingers crossed that the jeweller here doesnt damage the Monet stone during setting

@PintoBean and various others are the reason for at least 3/4 of my wish lists...yes lists plural ... as more than i can count. As newbie it's so fascinating and wondeful! Yeah I got a video and it is a sick ring! It's gotta be tweaked a little so by end of next week the latest. A funny hiccup was that the head was put on north south instead of east west so it's an easy decapitation (off with her head!), reattaching and then the black rhodium.
