Panettone Lovers Unite!

I'm pretty sure we have one left somewhere Sharon. I'll send it to you this Christmas!

OK, my threadjack is over too -- Sorry!

TOO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Send me booze and vintage stemware instead.:devil::razz::lol:

@canuk-gal, LOL My memories of this fruitcake are when I was between the ages between 6 and 12. I haven't tasted it since but that was back in the 60’s. I remember one of my cousins warning us that Grandma made that cake again when we walked in the door. She only made it at Christmas time.

@Dee*Jay, I remember this cake exactly like you do. What most have been describing above seems more like a light bread. My grandma’s was more like a brick.

The only fruitcake I've ever bought was from the Assumption Abbey Bakery, made by Trappist monks at their monastery in the Missouri Ozarks.

It's traditional, has a very long shelf life, and comes in a branded tin, which makes for a nice holiday gift. It's actually really good!

What?? LOL My Mother made the traditional cake (60s recipe) and there was never a bite left! I took her ancient recipe and used almond flour (sister has celiacs), organic fruit and nuts, and it was heavenly! I stopped making it a few years ago--I got lazy--and cost me 150$ bucks to mail it around the country. My adult nephews still ask my sisters if Aunty Sharon is making the cake this year!!! I guess either you love it or you hate it. My proper British dear friend loves my recipe and makes it.

OK thread hijack over!:saint:

Thread hijack back on! @canuk-gal , would you be willing to share your recipe? I have an old fruit cake recipe that I tried to convert to almond flour, and it was...dismal. Like you, I love a good fruitcake! I also love panettone.

Oooooh, for the days of ignorant bliss (kinda-sorta) when I didn't know how wheat affected me.

Sure. Let me find it.

I have always been a fruitcake enthusiast, and always had to buy small dismal looking cheap fruitcakes because I would be the only one in the household to partake in the delightful holiday treat! Last year one of my Italian friends friends turned me on to Panettone, which she got at Trader Joe’s of all places! It was really inexpensive she said, and it was amazingly good! I ended up buying another one right before they ended the seasonal offering and ate the whole darn thing myself again!

I am not a fan of Panettone, however, I could be now that I have seen this pic for a slice to be covered in butter!

DK :lol-2::lol-2::lol-2:

my thoughts exactly DK
i must remember to look in the xmas sales

I've never seen almonds on any panettone! What brand is that?
Is it also flavored with almond flavoring?

No particular brand , just a common Italian Panettone.
There are two types of Italian Panettone : one type has no glaze; the other one has as unpeeled almonds+sugar crumb on an almond flour+icing sugar+egg whites glaze.
Both types have a mix of vanilla and orange flavoring.

I'm talking about the original recipe Panettone: as I already said nowadays there are plenty variations.

The unpeeled almonds+sugar crumb on an almond flour+icing sugar+egg whites glaze version is called "Panettone glassato alle mandorle".
A couple of cheap brands: Flamigni, Zaghis.
Three expensive brands: Igino Massari, Renato Bosco, Loison (which is a bit cheaper than Igino Massari and Renato Bosco).

The Japanese version is significantly more buttery. You can smell the butter in it! So good! This was my second loaf. Had it with Hokkaido butter. Yes, even in a foreign place I managed to navigate and find my way to panettone!

thanks for the reminder but still unavailable at my local woolworths

I’ve officially lost my marbles! After eating two, 1kg panettone, I went out and hoarded these today!

Any other panettone lovers out there or do you regift these? They are so so so good!!!!!!!

How do you eat yours? Traditional? Chocolate chip? I’ve only ventured into traditional but will try the choc chip tomorrow. There was an amareno cherry one but I’m not sure how I feel about dried cherries in my panettone. The original is sooooooo yummy. But I should try new things! I’m torn!
