Ok, so I know I am really late to this thread however I lived in philly for a few years. I lived in Old City which is still downtown and part of the city! I actually love that area and if I had the opportunity would live there again. I was living there from 03-05. I had a fab. two bedroom apartment that rented for $1600. There are a lot of bars, resturaunts, and clothing stores in that area.

I know you mentioned about activity...I trained for a marathon in that city and loved it because I lived by the Benfranklin bridge I could run that and then head up through center city to the river and run the 8.5 mile loop around the river twice. There are hiking and biking trails all over. It seriously is amazing. If you like city life then I wouldn''t live anywhere else than in the city area of philly. Renting for a few months to get a good idea of where you want to live is a fantastic idea. There are other parts of the city other than center city, rittenhouse square, old city, the museum area, I can''t remember the others but there are many more. There are a lot of options.

Compared to living in NYC, Philly is small but much cleaner. Ok, I''m done. I miss Philly but my fiance never wanted to move there and his job is in NYC and I''ve actually been up here for 4 years or so now so I probably will never move back but I did love it.

Good luck!

I grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs and also went to college in the area. A quick note on the outdoors stuff- Wissahickon park runs from (I think) Chestnut Hill down to Manayunk, so it''s within the city limits. But you''d never know you are still in the city as it has miles of hiking trails as well as bike paths. Very convenient for hiking on the weekends.

For camping, I''d check out the PA state parks website. I know French Creek State Park (which isn''t far from Philly) has camping and I''m sure lots of places in the Poconos must have camping as well.

All in all, it''s easy to access outdoor activities within a relatively short drive of Philadelphia. So you should be good to go on that front!

Speaking of outdoors, for outdoor music I love the Mann Music Center in the warmer seasons. Definitely get their performance calendar and pick up some tickets if you have moved to Philadelphia by this summer! Bring your picnic basket, sit on the lawn (the cheap seats) and make a night of it.

Good luck in your move!

Agree on all that EL said! I lived in Philly from 02-05 and absolutely loved it ! Old City was awesome and that''s where I would go out on weekends (okay not just weekends but I was in Uni so it''s ok right? :P) I lived right accross from Ross (so many bargains!) in a reeeeeeally nice apt ... It was 1600 dollars for a 2bed/1bath.

A few of my friends lived near Rittenhouse Square... that area is just beautiful! There are some great places to eat/drink/have fun in Philly. Honestly loved it there! However I must admit it''s not all pretty... North Philly (I think) has a huge area called Mantua... yea don''t go there hah!
