I hope you are all ok. I hope everybody in NYC are ok. Not sure with the explosion but my prayers are with you all. My aunt in NC had to be rescued. A tree fell on her house and she was trapped. People please evacuate if they tell you to. Please! Bless you all.

Oh God, I'm so glad to hear she's okay! How horrible!

I'm not comprehending why people AREN'T evacuating. There aren't too many natural disasters out here in CA, but I wish they can foretell when earthquakes come! I'd drop everything to get away. Life is too, too, TOO precious.

Sadly this may go part way to explaining it...

Lulled for 'Superstorm' Sandy by indolent Irene
HOBOKEN, N.J.—As I sit in my darkened apartment, typing with a flashlight, I cannot believe that Sandy seemed inconsequential only 12 hours ago. 48 hours ago, I was enjoying the beginning of a weeklong series of Halloween celebrations for my three young children. Now, I sit with sewage-laden flood waters lapping at my children's bicycles and beloved possessions in the garage while the water inexorably rises through the building stairwell, leaving destruction in its wake.

Hoboken has hurricane fatigue. With two major storms in 14 months and the letdown of evacuating homes that remain pristine during our absences, my neighbors blithely disregarded the storm warnings over the last few days; virtually no one evacuated.

I first became aware that the threat was serious when I woke up on Monday morning to a picture of flooding at the Hoboken train station. Reports came in through the morning of high levels of water first lapping at the Hoboken waterfront and then flooding Sinatra Drive. The highest point in Hoboken, Castle Point, never floods -- until today. Heavy wind took down trees around City Hall and led to the explosion of a power station that plunged half of Hoboken into darkness. In anticipation of losing power, I established a text message group to stay in contact with local parents. The reports trickling in became increasingly dire as the storm surge moved west. Car alarms and explosions have punctuated the night. ---ends

Thank you all so much. She is ok, just shaken up. UGH! People you can die! Sorry, but it just ridiculous.

Starzin, That's a sad story :( I'm just saying, if I was told to evacuate, I'd grab my jewelry box and go. It's that simple. I hope this isn't taken wrong. If it is, I'm sorry in advance. But elderly people are so stubborn (my aunt), I understand that you feel you are up in age and you think, what will be will be. But there are other people, beside YOU to consider. There are a lot of people that love you and want to keep you around as long as we can. It really makes me angry because I think it's selfish. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Thanks for checking in, everyone.

CharmedOne, glad to hear your aunt is ok.

I heard from Perry, he and his family are fine. I gather Leon, Rachel etc..are ok too. Thanks for the update on GOG, Madelise. Anyone reached out to IDJ?

My brother and his daughter live in Manhattan. I checked with them last night (my time), ie. about 12 hrs ago and they were fine. Am trying to reach them now but no success. I hope they're ok.

Prayers for everyone affected, PS-ers and non-PS'ers alike.

Thanks for that blog entry, Starzin. I agree, CharmedOne. I'm actually in need to plan my emergency bag. SoCal's been "late" on her "big one" for decades, and lately, we've been having small rumbles here and there. It raised a few hair on my neck, but after seeing all the horrible photos of the east coast under water, and hearing my friends say the stores ran out of generators… maybe I should start taking things seriously and get prepared. My grandma is completely opposite of what the seniors are rumored to be like. Half of her van is filled with emergency nonperishable foods, water bottles, batteries, etc. LOL! She's ready to run!

Good to know Perry and his are fine, Phoenix. Thanks for updating us.

I'm in northwestern NJ, about 60 miles from NYC. The winds are still gusting, and sustained around 30 MPH. We get a break from the noise for about five to fifteen minutes, and then the howling wind gusts return. We are still getting waves of pounding rain. The rain has been battering us for countless hours now. Been without power since 6:15 pm Monday. We have a generator, so it's powering the fridge, electronic chargers, and lamps in the old section of the house. Everyone else is asleep...children (most of them) are on the foyer floor because it's the most sheltered area of the home, and the generator outside provides "white noise" to mask the bangings and howls of the storm outside. My older daughter is asleep on the couch in front of me, surrounded by the dog who still think they're on guard duty. My husband fell asleep in our room, not a good place to be but so far so good. I'm still awake because I'm on nightwatch for the barn (horse in there), generator (don't want to run out of gas), and of course praying no trees fall on our home as it's an odd set up, with no attic to cushion the blow of a falling massive oak tree. I'll sleep when dawn comes, I can relax and pass the sentinel duty on to hubby.

I have never been in a storm like this before. We've always managed to escape the horrible hurricanes, as we are pretty far from the coast. Not this time.

 Stay safe, Elf.. I can't imagine having to take turns doing night watch just to make sure everyone's safe.. :knockout:

Hi Melissa :wavey: thanks for checking in and giving the update. It's good to know you are safe and it also sounds as though you have things remarkably under control!

I'm sorry for your long vigil but hopefully your turn will come for some well earned rest quicker than it seems at this stage :))

Madelise, That's awesome! She sounds like she knows a thing or two about being prepared. I'm sure wayyyyy more than me :) I really have to do better next time, as far as emergency meals are concerned.

Phoenix, I hope you hear from your brother soon. Stay safe everybody.

Elf I hope you get your power back soon. Those generators make me nervous, I'd be awake watching it all night.

Thinking of everyone!

Glad to hear from you folks who are ok! Hope once it gets light that things where you are aren't as bad as feared. NYC doesn't look real optimistic -- but if you're safe, that's what really matters. Chins up! Piles of dust your way!

--- Laurie

Hoping that all of you affected by the storm are ok. Please check in again this morning if you can.

It's not good here. Subways are disabled as well as all bridges/tunnels (except the Lincoln tunnel I believe) and there are a number of deaths in the area. :(sad

I cannot reach my parents. When I last spoke with them the firemen had not arrived and now I am unable to reach them. I am sure they are OK but ofc till I speak with them I cannot know for sure and am worried.

Goodness knows when things will be sorted out and back to semi normal. Devastation everywhere.
Not sure when we will get to go and check on our shore house. I hate not being able to go there and survey the damage and start the clean up. Really have no clue as to what to expect and so badly want to go there but all the roads are closed. No way possible for us to get there and no clue when we will be allowed to.

I hope everyone here made it through safely and am thinking good thoughts for everyone affected by this disaster.
As Laurie posted material things don't matter- if you are safe and sound that is everything. Hugs to everyone.

It's morning and I think the storm passed us last night. How is everyone else doing? I'm sorry for those who've sustained home damage but keep in mind that your lives are priceless and irreplaceable!

Hi missy and Chrono :wavey:
I've just been catching up with the news via TV - still 7million without power so it's a great surprise to see you both back so soon and most of all...safe.

I know it's not over by a long shot but you are coming out the other side of this.

Oh, Missy. ::) You poor thing, I hope they will contact you somehow and let you know they're okay.

Please, keep us posted, I was worried about them all night!

iLander, thank you so much for your concern. You are such a dear! I was just able to contact them via a neighbor's cell phone and they are OK but no power and my mom has meds that need refrigeration. Luckily their neighbor is keeping it in her fridge for my mom. Guess what? The firemen never made it to my parents last night. That is how overwhelmed they are! I just hope that no one who had a true medical or otherwise emergency died from not being able to get help. It's terrifying that if someone needed an ambulance etc last night they might have died waiting! ;(

Hi Starzin, yes, even though it will be a long road ahead I hope the worst of it is over. Ofc I am scared about what might be at the beach house but at least we are OK!

Vapid- are you OK? Please check in when you can!

So pleased you've finally heard that they are safe and sound and have neighbours to look out for them :appl:

So is the power on again for you guys or are you on generators or what?

Thanks for your concern Starzin! We actually never lost power. Things flickered a bit last night on and off but the power in our Brooklyn neighborhood didn't go out unbelievably. I am expecting the unexpected though as the winds are so darn strong still but so far so good re the power.

I feel so badly for my parents. They lost their car- totally flooded with the salt water of the ocean across from them and no power. I wish they would let us come and get them and have them stay with us but ofc no. They want to stay. Right now they are worried about their pool because though they emptied it for the upcoming storm it is about to overflow and they have no power to drain it. And their basement is filled with water. So, car gone, basement devastated, no power and pool about to overflow. Stress galore!

Oh, and we cannot reach my sister in Long Island. I spoke with her twice yesterday but their power went out and her phone is dead. My dh sent her a text but no response but if their mobile is dead that's not a surprise. Just would like to hear that she, her dh and my nieces are all OK.

WOW...never lost power, that's amazing and thankfully one less thing to worry about for the moment.

You're right in that this is incredibly stressful for your parents, how absolutely devastating for them and ofc you - I'm so sorry and our hearts go out to you and them. Not what you want to be dealing with when you're 80 :((

It is so good to hear from everyone, and that they are safe! Things certainly are not over. Downed power lines, trees and branches, and continued winds will be challenges. But again, property is not life!

Missy, such a relief that your parents are okay!! I've been thinking of you specifically all night. There are multiple interview examples of other people who chose to stay in their homes, and there is a theme of "It has never been this bad. I just didn't think it would be this time either." I understand their mindset, but it just makes me so sad that they couldn't think of the agony of their loved ones worrying for them, and the first responders and rescuers put into danger due to people's inaction.

Most important though, very few deaths!

Glad to hear from you guys!

thinking of everyone!!! thanks for starting this check in thread Uppy!

If anyone hears from VapidLapid or Kaleigh, please let us know. Those are just two posters who came to mind. I know there are more.

Hi All!
We live north of Manhattan, and we had some trees down but we did not lose power. I'm going to head to 47 street now, to make sure everything is okay at the office. I'll check back in again once I've done so and let you know what else we see

Good to hear from you David! Thanks for checking in and do take care when you go out. We would of course appreciate an update from you and I sincerely hope you find everything okay.

Thanks for checking in, David.

Does anyone know if the IDJ folks are ok?
