FI vetoed the cake I wanted-- said it looked like a top hat... and he was right.

So here are the two choices:

First this is buttercream with granache. I would do light pink or white rose petals.

Second one-- with light pink roses or green hydrangeas or green orchids. ETA: Or white roses... it kinda looks fabulous as is.

I vote for the second cake...it''s not that I don''t like the first one, but the dripping chocolate somehow seems *off* to me for a wedding cake. Dunno why, that was just my gut reaction.

#2.

Seems like cake #1 is oozing ... or, perhaps, fatally injured.

There''s an image. LMAO. Deco... you are delight!

FG... not weddingy huh?

You know what the funniest thing about my wedding choices? I was intentionally going for funky. Then I posted about it, and jcrow''s wise words range true -- that I have to be true to myself. And well... being true to myself is having interesting results.

I bought a very simple clean lined classic but modern gown. I picked a very traditional color for my bouquet: pink. But am doing a contemporary color scheme of green and white for all the other flowers (except maybe my cake-- if I use pink with it) ... I''m doing a ''modern'' twist on a classic centerpiece. And now the cake. I want white buttercream (not fondant although it''s the same price at the bakery I''m leaning toward) and my two choices both have a more modern/ clean lined approach to a tradition buttercream with flowers. My invites are different than the usual style. Then there is Metallica for walking down the aisle.

I''m very happy with the results of jcrows advice. Once I started trusting myself, instead of forcing things... well everything has really been clicking.

I like both cakes. I really do. So does FI. They are very different though... and your impressions/ comments are invaluable-- because I get to see other''s reactions to the designs.

So thank you both very much ... and everyone else??? PLEASE be honest-- bluntness is always welcome in any of my posts!

OK, I''ll be honest. I like the 2nd one. The first one reminds me of the "ghoul" drippy halloween font on my computer.....

Sorry Gypsy...but I will say that 99% of the time, I just love your style!

LMAO. Thank you for the honesty... and the compliment TG.

I''m waiting for someone to say that it reminds them of the thing that ate Tasha Yar on Next Generation. Or like evil is taking over the cake. I can understand the observations.

#2!

Its time for my blunt Scorpio rising personality to come out here...the first cake looks gothy and kind of morbid in nature.

Maybe I lived in SF for too long and had too many gothy friends...but thats what it reminds me of.

I''d go with number 2. No question. Two very different looks you have going there!

When I first looked at the pictures I liked number 1 the best...but then I pictured it with light pink flowers and I really didn''t like it at all anymore! Number 2 is stunning as is. I''d go with that one. It would also look nice with the other flower combinations you suggested. They both look really tasty, I want to go eat cake now...

I like the second one better. The first one is very pretty too

I vote for number 2.

Number 1 is an interesting cake, however, I am not sure that I like the amount of contrast between the colors?
Maybe a darker "base" color for the cake would help to tone down the effect.
Maybe the part you like is the contrast??? The cake is pretty, just doesn''t seem as "wedding cake-y" to me.

....

Gypsy,

Your taste usually jives with mine, but um... cake #1? My impression? Looks like someone slit it''s throat... 3 X... the red roses are gushing blood, the dripping chocolate is dried blood... okay GROSS!

But cake #2 is lovely : )

Hope all is well!

#2 unless the dripping in #1 disappears

second one. first one seems a bit gothic or something.

i also thing #2 is in line with everything else you are planning- your colors, your style, etc.

I say the 2nd one too because I just don''t think pink roses would look good with #1. I didn''t see it as gothic or bleeding until everyone else said so though.

I LOVE the *idea* of cake 1, but what if instead of the "drips", which do look kind of off, you had chocolate scallops or dots?

Could put a chocolate rose or two on it too, if you like.

Just an idea. Cake 2 looks "stuffy" to me.

Also, could you do coated chocolate accents? Sort of like an M and M coating so you can make it pink or whatever?

I like the first one better, but I don''t like the dripping look.

How about something like cake #2 but with some color?!?!

The first one looks kind of "phantom of the opera" to me, but perhaps with other colors it would be OK. Maybe pastel drips instead of chocolate?

Hi Gypsy!!

Definitely # 2...it just looks more wedding-ish, for the same reasons the others stated, and to me it just fits your style more...

The resident oddball likes the first one!

I do love them both. With the color combo you want, the second one would be much better.

But you have now given me some ideas when I make the final plans for our cake next week! It would be so us, a gothy touch, since we are getting married Halloween.

I like the second one better... the first one reminds me of someone bleeding... but I''m weird like that.

absolutely #2. You could bring #1 to a Halloween party

...

nyextremist-- glad to be of service.

OKAY... so some of you like the first one... but without the dripping. Don''t know if that is possible-- in terms of the rose petals sticking... but I''ll mention it to the bakers when we go for a tasting. No dripping. Got it. Number two is a little stuffy.... but I think maybe some light pink roses or green hydrangeas would warm it up a bit.

YUM! Cake. Mmmm....

Yep - I agree. It looks yummy, but not something I''d think would go well at a wedding.

The drippy thing just makes it look like the cake is failing somehow....especially with the color contrast.

If you like the drip, though, perhaps it would look better in a white chocolate ganache instead?

And, if you want a bit more ecclectic, you could do #2 with the beading look in brown chocolate instead. That would look stunning!

Hmm aljd... all things to think about and talk to the baker about. THANKS!!

i like rainbowtrout''s suggestion of a scalloped edge or some other type of decorative trim for cake 1 -- just not the drips. I like that there is a bit of chocolate.

also, if you''re doing butter cream the rose petals should be fine with or without the tackiness of chocolate. i think...

Hahaha, I liked #1 at first because it was different. However, I do see how it looks ghoulish now. So yeah, I''d go with #2 also.

It just bothers me that it''s separated by flowers. I have a weird quirk where I like all the layers stuck together. Separating them is easier for the baker and I view it as a "cheaper" or lesser quality cake. Either that or an old fashioned cake kinda like the ones my parents had back in the 70''s.

Lulu-- I''m talking to the caterer now (emailing back and forth) so I''ll ask about the tackiness.

Codex-- that''s interesting. I was afraid the separated layers would be more expensive. I like that the top layer (ours to keep for our anniversary) is separated... on a pedestal and the other two layers are together for the reception.
