PS Mommy Thread-Newborn to 12 months!

CDT - The Oh Snap! is new and I haven''t seen it in person yet. My first impression is that I wouldn''t necessarily get it though - it''s pretty similar to the Ergo but costs a bit more, plus there are other soft structured carriers on the market that are similar to it for about the same price that have been around longer:

Oh Snap! $140
Ergo $105
Beco $140
Pikkolo $130

I have an Ergo but I haven''t tried the others in person, but I''ve heard good things about them all. Someone on here has a Beco, but I don''t remember who. It may be someone in the toddler thread?

As far as mei tai versus soft structured carrier, so much of it is personal preference. A mei tai does take a bit longer to tie on, and it''s definitely harder to do without dragging the straps on the ground (which matters if you''re putting it on outside and it''s been raining or is dirty), but I feel like I personally get a more comfortable fit in one. A SSC is a little easier and faster to get on, and evidently some guys think they look manlier (more like a backpack or something) and so it can be easier to convince daddies to wear them. The main things that you can do with a MT that you cannot do with a SSC are a hip carry and a high back carry. Well, you can technically do a hip carry with the Ergo, but it''s uncomfortable IMO and I can''t get it on or off by myself and need someone to help me. A high back carry is good if the baby just wants to look at everything. I can''t remember offhand what your future family plans are, but you can also wear a high back carry when/if you''re pregnant if you think you may still want to wear him then.

MG - George has sleep-crawled into the headboard before (bumping his head which woke him up and then he started crying) and sometimes turns around in circles a bit. But he always goes up to the headboard or into me, and never down under the covers thankfully. And he usually settles down if I pat him on the butt or rub his back. DH was a sleepwalker as a child, to the point where my inlaws had to get a motion detector security system to keep him from just sleep walking out of the house, so I''m not sure if this is a normal baby thing or a sleepwalker baby thing though. I hope I don''t end up with a crazy sleepwalker on my hands!

Lili- thank you!

DD - The Ellaroo Mei Hip has good reviews.

Cdt - Not Blen, but have done a load of research on this in the last few weeks. Here were my findings:

Wraps - Very comfortable and you can do loads of different holds, but I wasn't keen on the X between the baby's legs as it seemed to slip all the time and didn't feel comfortable to Daisy or secure enough to be totally hands free. I was using the Tricotti and perhaps other wraps would be better - I may try a different type in the summer.

Carriers like the Ergo and Wilkinet - they were too structured for me, I wanted something I could fold up and keep in the diaper bag or shopping bag on the stroller. I also tried a back carry in the Wilkinet and didn't feel comfortable - also Daisy hated it.

The minute I tried the Mei Tai I knew I'd found the right one. It's incredibly comfortable and you can tie in in loads of different ways which is great when somedays you have thick winter clothes and other days lighter weight. Even with a minimal tie it feels really secure and you can be totally hands free. It's very quick to put on once you know how and I can adjust it or retie while I'm walking along. I have one that has a patterned fabric one side and plain black the other so DH will wear it as well. Because there are no buckles it takes no adjustment a.nd also allows micro-adjusting while you are wearing it

If you consider that I've had a lot of surgery on my spine, take mega-analgesics everyday to deal with backpain and can last about 20 minutes with the BBjorn, I went out with Daisy in a front carry at 11am this morning till 4pm this afternoon with 2 half-hour stops where she came out. I then put her in a back carry at 4.30pm till 7.30pm while I did the laundry, tidied the house and cooked dinner - I hung one of her toys onto the shoulder strap and she played with that, watched me and then fell asleep for over an hour. I don't feel like I've been carrying a 20lb + baby around all day and have no pain at all.

I have the Ellaroo Deluxe Organic Mei Tai which comes with a head-rest bit - which honestly you don't need at all. I'm really tempted to make a few as they're very simple and I could add a few things I'd like - like longer straps and tapered ends for easier knotting - plus I could have loads of different fabrics which would be fun.

ETA: Agree with Blen that the straps on the Mei Tai could be a bugger if it's been raining outside when you try to put it on.

Blen - I really recommend taking George to things. Daisy drives me CRAZY at home as she's bored and then gets whingy. Out she's super happy and so far behaves well. Occasionally she will test the echo in museum's, galleries etc but as it's happy noises people tend to smile rather than do THAT LOOK. Actually I've been really suprised how nice people have been about me taking a baby to events and places that wouldn't really be considered baby appropriate.

Just want to add that I'm so not the type of mother who takes her child to art galleries and says 'Look darling it's a Picasso', it's more a case of being too tight to pay for a baby sitter!

Plus, the last exhibition at the Tate had two rooms of hard-core ****... I'm sure she'll need therapy later on!

For the co-sleeping moms (Pandora and Blen I know if, and any others that want to chime in!)... Kyle has a bad runny nose, and wasn''t feeling good last night, so I put him in bed with us. He hasn''t slept with us in a while, and boy was he a restless sleeper! At one point around 1am DH found him near our knees under the blankets, sleep crawling. He had his butt in my face for a while, bonked his head on the head board some, and rolled all over the place. DH took him back to his crib at 3am so we could get some sleep. Do your babies do this in your bed, or do I just have a sleep walker in training?
From what I have read, breastfeeding mothers tend to sleep in the same position - on your side, knees brought up to under the baby''s feet which stops them moving down, lower arm raised above your head which stops them moving up, and upper arm over them which stops them moving sideways and allows a constant monitoring of heat levels. This position also gives the baby easy access to boobs for night-feeding.

Formula feeding mothers tend not to sleep in this position (it''s not that comfortable at the beginning) - which is one of the reasons that co-sleeping is safer for SIDS reduction with breast-fed babies but not to the same extent with formula fed.

So... it could be that the way you sleep allows Kyle to move more than Daisy would, or you just have a wriggler and I have a stationary baby! Daisy will roll from side to back and throw the odd arm out, but otherwise she''s pretty still and can''t move up or down even if she wanted to. In the morning she''ll roll onto her front and sit up, but not at night.

Not sure if that helps...

Thanks Blen and Pandora for the reviews! I definitely have to do more research, but right now am leaning towards giving the Mei Tai a go! One think I hated about the baby bjorn is lack of wearable options. And he couldn't wear anything "heavy" or else he wouldn't fit (it's so narrow!).

My only concern is that I'll find the Mei Tai difficult to get on and off
9.gif
But after some practice, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.

And can I just say..Pandora - WOW! I cannot believe you carried Daisy all day and didn't feel it! That alone makes me want the Mei Tai. I miss holding Lex a lot, but man he's just so heavy to me. He's a very *solid* kid. W/ the Baby Bjorn, I felt like my shoulders were bearing all the weight, so after like 30 minutes, my DH had to take over. I must be weak

No, you''re not weak - it''s the biggest problem with the BB, all the weight is on your shoulders. I could only do 20 minutes or so and I would NEVER have gone out for the day with it, I only used it for short trips. Daisy is also very ''solid'' - she''s not one of these long skinny babies, she has more than one thigh crease and fat little wrists! I had her in a snowsuit today, so you can easily get bulky clothes in.

Honestly the Mei Tai is super simple to put on - it''s worth spending some time in front of a mirror trying some different ties and which feel comfortable to you and to Lex. Doing the back carry is scary at the beginning - do it over a bed (I dropped Daisy a couple of times the first time I tried) to begin with. I''m still not feeling secure enough about actually doing the ''putting her on my back'' when I''m out, but I''m sure I''ll get there!

I was curious if you did the back carry yet. I think I wouldn''t be comfortable doing that right now either...but I''m sure Mr. Nosey would love it

I did the back carry at home this evening - it wasn''t as comfortable as the front carry, but I think she was probably a bit too low on my back. However I''d dropped her once putting her in and so didn''t want to scare her by maybe dropping her again (dropped onto the bed so she wasn''t hurt or anything).

It was great for getting things done and she fell asleep in it so that was nice. She spent a lot of time pulling my hair so I''d turn my head round and she could smile at me - very sweet but rather painful!

It''s worth watching the U-tube videos for hints on how to wear them.

We''re 3 years in on co-sleeping with Will and the boy is all over the place at night. He started this when he was less than a year old, but I don''t remember exactly when. It''s a LOT worse when he''s sick because he simply can''t seem to get comfortable. The other night he was running a fever and would not stay put.

The funniest is when I wake up in the morning and he''s stretched across the top of the bed on the pillows.

My 9 year old daughter, who also co-slept, did the same thing.

Oh, and both of them have crawled right out of bed, which is a rude awakening, but didn''t hurt them.

So I convinced DH to do the 11:30pm feeding by himself on weekends. The feeding part is easy (prop them on boppys and one bottle in each hand)...the burping process is a PIA since they both always want to be burped with such urgency that it can get a little chaotic..

My hope is that he will find that it is "easy" enough that he will offer to do it on weekdays so that I can get some continuous sleep!!!...so for what it''s worth, send some PS vibes that the babies are good for him and he has good luck tonight and tomorrow with that feeding!!!

Wanted to share a funny picture from our holiday photo shoot this afternoon!

Blen I think I am going to get it. I`ll let you know how I like it!

I just typed out a long reply and then hit the back button.

DD, I was going to say that I''ve tried both the Scootababy and the Ellaroo Mei Hip and found the Scootababy to be more comfortable and easier to adjust, but I can see that you''ve already decided to go with that. I really hope you like it! Hunter''s PJs are so cute.

Pandora, I do go out with George almost every day, but it''s boring places like my mom''s house and the grocery store. There''s a ton of interesting, free stuff to do in this area (museums, zoos, etc) and I think I just need to bite the bullet and do it. He hates the carseat so much that it makes me reluctant to go downtown.

CDT, getting a mei tai on and off really isn''t that big of a deal, but you do need to be patient enough to learn how to do it and take the couple extra seconds each time you put it on (versus just buckling something together). DH and I were both able to learn a back carry very quickly but we bought it at a brick and mortar store with a very helpful staff who was more than happy to help us practice before taking it home. Youtube helps a lot too.

I had George on my back tonight as I cleaned up from our holiday party and washed a boatload of dishes, and he eventually fell asleep in it. Like Pandora I find it so useful when I need to do stuff around the house and he''s in the kind of mood where he just wants to be held.

As far as bulky clothing goes, it should fit fine over them. It''s like the opposite of stylish, but what I often do for walks is to put George in just pants, a shirt, and a hat, and then put him on in a front carry (he''s close to 20 lbs and a front carry is still very comfortable, by the way) and then wear my maternity coat over both of us. I like being able to feel him and know that his skin feels like he''s at a comfortable temperature.

Cosleeping - I use the pose that Pandora mentioned, which does help to contain baby. The only time that we''ve had issues with crawling into the headboard is when I do what I''m doing now - sitting on the bed next to him, playing around on my laptop.

Hey! Quick check in... we're back from the long road trip. The driving went fine, sleeping did NOT. He was up every 2 hours the entire trip.

Speaking of sleeping, we had his 9 month well child check today. I love our pediatrician. I spoke with her at length about A's sleep patterns and everything, and we decided to CIO (with checking on him, but no nursing) overnight. Tonight's the first night and it is not going well.... but I am hoping that it will be for all of our benefit. I told the pediatrician I trust her and I will do whatever she thought was best for A and she said that if I'm ready, he is ready to sleep through the night and it is unlikely he will start on his own at this point. I trust her so... here goes. DH is off work this weekend and promises to help overnight. I think it will take both of us. A is one stubborn little dude.

Yesterday A fell off his changing table while I was standing right there changing him
7.gif
I was trying to wrestle the phone out of his hands while changing him. Since I was right there, I tried to catch him and broke his fall, so he wasn't hurt, but both of us were really freaked out. It is crazy how much trouble these mobile babies can get into in the blink of an eye. It was probably the scariest thing that has happened to me yet as a parent. We will be doing changes on the floor from now on.

Dreamer I'm excited to hear what you think of your new sling! I enjoyed hearing Blen and Pandora talk about using slings with an older baby. So far we are still enjoying the Ergo, but it's always interesting to hear about other types. I also have the pouch kind like what RPS posted in her photo, and I use it with him in a hip carry sometimes. I don't really recommend it though for long time use, because the fabric cuts into my neck after any period of time. It was more useful when he was little and I could carry him inside of it. The advantage of that sling is that I can stuff it in my diaper bag and have it with me all the time.

Gotta run... nice to see you all again.

TDM I hate to say this, but we found that checking on H just made him more mad and upset
15.gif
So did our friend. It sounds really mean I guess, but it worked. Three nights and it was all caputo. Load the bed up with binky's that helps too. Actually, on night 1 I went in and nursed him at his first wake up but not the second, then the next night not at all. So you can always try that type of gradual approach. In the end, I think he needs to be alone to acutally learn to fal asleep and going in can perhaps make him more wildfor your attentions etc. Geez when I write it like that it sounds terrible! Still, all the moms I know who have babies who sleep through did this eventually... Anyways, do whatever is best, but be consistent! LOL! I still like the ergo too, btw, but H sometimes doesn't like being so snugged up to me, also it is a little hard to put on and off quickly. So I like this hip one and I think I will order it, there is a good return policy.

ETA HUnter crawls sooooo FAST! He is like some sort of little machine! They get is so much trouble! And he has fallen all over the place all the time, inclusing off the kitchen table (his dad was on duty for that one
20.gif
). Somehow they survive!

Dreamer - love the pic!! his outfit is soooooooo cute!

Blen and Pandora - I'm super excited to try it out..I'm such a dork. I bit the bullet and ordered one last night online. I hope I don't regret my purchase, but I REALLY need something because lately Lex wants to be held a lot, but it's too difficult to do w/out a carrier. And I like the carriers anyway because they're so close to you
30.gif
I did go w/ the Babyhawk Mei Tai btw.

TDM - good luck w/ CIO! We may end up using it soon, since I went back to work, Lex is waking once a night again
14.gif
He was sick for 2 weeks though so that played a role, but he better now and still waking up! We'll see if it comes to that. Have fun on your trip

Mandarine - That's great that your DH is doing the late night feeding!!! You need your rest. Sending easy vibes to your DH

So last night DH and I were supposed to head over to Busch Gardens-Christmas Town with some friends. But due to the bad weather we decided to cancel. We asked my parents if we could still leave Evan with them overnight as planned so DH and I could have a date night and get a full night of sleep. They, of course, were super excited. I was worried because the baby hadn''t been following his sleep patterns for like 2 nights now---he was up practically every hour and a half. So we warned them ahead of time.

So, my husband just called and said he talked to my Dad and he said Evan fell asleep at 8:30 and didn''t wake up until 1:00. Then fell back asleep by 2:30 and didn''t wake up again until like 7:00!! Why can''t my baby do that with me!! I''m happy though because my parents volunteered to take him again if we want--soo woohoo--he didn''t scare them off. My mom also said when she checked on him before heading to work at 4 a.m. he was smiling in his sleep.

Date night with the husband was nice--We went to a nice restaurant and then went and saw Avatar. It was nice to have an evening out--but I missed Evan like crazy--especially when we came home and saw all of his stuff but no baby.

Hmm, I''ve been thinking of getting another type of carrier---we have the baby bjorn (Haven''t used it yet though), but I think a sling/wrap might be more practical especially for around the house. I find myself sometimes having to sit on the couch all day holding him because he''s in one of his moods and wants to be held. Thanks for the advice on the different kinds of wraps/slings.

Pandora - I meant to ask - what does the BLW book say about shellfish? Do you know offhand?

CDT - I hope you enjoy it! I really do like mine. Worst case, they have great resale value.

Tao - that''s great that you were able to get out and enjoy yourselves, and that he took it pretty well. A good carrier definitely helps on the days where they just want to be held. It feels so restricting to feel like you have to either sit on the couch all day or have a screaming baby.

Happy birthday, Max and Dexter!!

tao... your note re: the baby sleeping more for your parents made me think of something i''d read re: babies being able to smell mom and the milk in the same house... that when mom leaves a lot of times the babies tend to feel more calm because the ''need to feed'' is not as prevalent if she is not around. wonder if that contributed at all. who knows i guess, just made me think of it! yay for date night.

Fiery---I decided to brave it and post the picture for you and everyone else to see of my husband''s christmas present...hopefully he won''t find it online...Thanks again for the idea!

It''s a picture of the pictures---so sorry if quality is down...didn''t feel like photoshopping the pictures together....so here they are already in the frame.

Happy birthday, Max and Dexter!!
Blen - Shellfish, shark, marlin, honey are okay after a year. Nuts after 3 years.

I reckon you need to be more vigilant and careful if you have allergies in the family. I'm very allergic to kiwi, so Daisy won't be having that as I can't safely prepare it.

I'm interested to know how parents cope with nut allergies in the USA. They can be so dangerous and peanuts are a big culprit, yet you guys all eat peanut butter like mad.

I gave Daisy roast potatoes tonight - weird heritage Shetland Black potatoes - and she really liked them, although she still did this funny expression like things taste nasty, but came back for more!

How is George doing with the gag reflex? D is still scaring me occasionally - although she always sorts it out herself eventually.

Tao - I'd have a look at some of the articles on the BBjorn and hip development. I would definitely go with a different type of carrier in the early days - plus the BB isn't great if you want to wear the baby and actually do stuff round the house.

Cdt - Yay on ordering the carrier, the BabyHawk seems very similar to the Ellaroo Mei Tai so I hope you love it as much as I love mine!

Pandora - Lex makes those faces too, but I''ve realized he only does it when I give him "real food" as opposed to pureed, so I''m thinking it''s a texture thing?? And my DH is so so paranoid about choking I''ve pretty much had to give up on letting Lex try things because if he appears to be gagging, DH freaks out and then gets mad at me
37.gif
So, we''re sticking to puree for now (but I''m not making things as smooth as before). RE: peanut allergies...super scary for sure!! No one in my family is allergic thank goodness. The only food allergy I have is mangos, but it''s not severe (just have an itchy face/mouth for a few days after I eat one). So not sure if I''ll give those to Lex in the future.

Could be... I''ll have to try something puree-ish and see what happens with that.

I''ve been very bad and been shopping online. After freezing my a$$ off all day with D in the sling and me unable to button my coat up I have bought a Mama Jacket (it''s rather cheaper here than the USA, but even so...)

I''m hoping it will be as good as the reviews were and will save me having to freeze while madam stays toasty warm! Should also be good in the Spring when it''s too warm for her to wear a snow-suit - I''m already finding that she gets too hot if we are in stores for a while.

Still love the Stokke, but it''s not what I want to fight the crowds with before xmas!

HAPPY Birthday Dex and Max! I''m "here" and around but have been busy going to parties and stuff. I''m still no where close to finshing the christmas shopping and I''m now realizing that a lot of people are just not getting a gift. Too bad so sad. I''m over it. lol.

We''re doing really well and just wanted to pop in and say HI to everyone!

Tao, very cute present! I''m sure your husband will love it.

Pandora, thanks for the food stuff. George took a shrimp out of my hand last night, licked the horseradish sauce off of it (and loved it), and then took a big bite out of the shrimp. At that point my SIL saw and was like "ack no shellfish!" at which point I remembered that shrimp is shellfish (duh) and took it away from him. He seemed fine, but I know that sometimes with allergies it''s a multiple exposure thing. So I was wondering. I think that people here tend to be pretty strict with nuts and young children, and it isn''t until they''re a bit older that they go nuts (ha!) with the peanut butter sandwiches.

Gagging - he only really gags if he gets something down his throat and can''t swallow, like if he tries to swallow an entire green bean at once while the end is still sticking out of his mouth. Silly boy.

Mela -
35.gif

Mara - I know people who say that their babies sleep through the night better in their own room for that reason - if they don''t smell the milk, they don''t wake up wanting it or something.

DH just moved back in with us an hour ago. Of course he had to choose the day of the snowstorm to move, and amazingly he got here in one piece. PHEW.

Thanks ladies!!! The party went really well and the boys had a great time. I will post some pictures as soon as some people send me some because we didn't take any ourselves!

And Blen our pedi says nuts are fine if you don't have a history of nut allergies. Research supports that position. Just be careful of doing a lot of peanut butter at one time (hard to swallow) and don't do whole nuts. But I give them all kinds of things with nuts in them recently with no problems. I think people have gone nuts on the allergy front recently (JMO of course).

NF - just saw what you wrote - thanks! No history of nut allergies. Is that starting at 1 yr, or whenever?

He said that a year is his guideline-and to take from that what I wanted. So I started giving them nuts last month a little bit. I don't go crazy on it-but from what I have found credible research doesn't seem to support the theory that keeping kids away from nuts until preschool stops any allergies.

Nuts - the 3 year advice is for whole nuts due to choking, 1 year is their advice re allergies. The BLW book also suggests that many kids will instinctively avoid foods that they are allergic or intolerant of.

I''ve had a prawn slip-up moment too... the main reason I''m being fairly strict on shellfish is because I LOVE the stuff and really don''t want anyone in the house with allergies to it
