WOW! sorry to hear this latest news.

i say you post the name of the business here on PS so that others know to avoid them (i''m assuming that it''s another jewelers?)

wow. the office that signed for it are jerks. seriously. i could never imagin doing that to another person

and USPS? even worse right now.

Oh my gosh! Are you effing kidding me!?!?!? USPS Investigators. All of your ideas are sound. Raise hell Freke. Raise hell.

The USPS guy on my end isn''t in the office right now, but he''ll be back in a bit. He''s my link in all of this. Would it be inappropriate to buy him a gift card to a nice restaurant when this is all over?

Freke, I''m sorry you have had to go through all of this! I hope it can get resolved.

As for your local USPS guy, the rules might be different for postal employees (they have somewhat different status), but federal employees generally can''t accept gifts worth more than $20.

Postal Inspectors have been alerted. By both myself and my USPS guy. Who I just adore. He's the only one who has made me not go ape-caca bonkers.

ETA: IF I find out which office signed for it, I will let you guys know. Don't worry.

No I think that is very kind. But as Cleo mentioned make sure to find out the limit of what he can accept.

Ok maybe I''m really stupid, but can''t you just file a police report? Oh wait, I understand, it''s because you don''t know who STOLE it from you. If I understand right, it was delivered to the wrong suite, and the dishonest people there signed for it and took it, even if it wasn''t for them. And now they won''t give it back. Aren''t people afraid of the type of karma they are attracting??? Jeez. I hope everything works out for you. Keep us posted.

freke, maybe even better than a gift voucher would be a letter to his supervisor, CC''ing the manager of his region.

come promotion time, this sort of thing is worth its weight in gold.

Great idea whitby. Freke, oh my oh my has this been an ordeal or what??? I feel for you, big time!!!!!

Oh, Freke I am so LIVID for you! I really hope the guy you''re dealing with comes through for you. And I agree, a nice letter to his supervisor would be a great idea.

Oh gosh,

I hope this has a happy ending soon. fingers crossed. . .

Freke, just got caught up on the rest of this thread and I''m LIVID and APPALLED! I think thus far, while you''re clearly frustrated, you''re handling the situation with grace, intelligence, and maturity. I know you know what you need to do and you have the legal resources available to see this through to an acceptable resolution. But damn I''m pissed off for you! I''m interested to hear how things progress with the investigation, please keep us in the loop.

I would TOTALLY file a police report IF I felt like it would do anything, but more importantly IF I KNEW WHO HAS THE STUPID THING. Although I think the if we knew, the recipient would probably go over there and kick some booty.

Apparently the Postal Inspectors are essentially police, with powers to arrest them and everything.

Now I''m just terrified that they will have opened it, and will replace my stone with something crappy.

Think positive about the stone! The good news is that the postal inspectors are BAD ASS. Way worse than most cops from what I hear and they take postal fraud/theft SERIOUS. So it's great that they are involved now. They'll get it figured out for sure.

Not sure if this has already been addressed, but you do have insurance by virtue of having sent the package by registered mail. From the USPS website:

Registered Mail provides the maximum security.

When you're sending valuable or irreplacable items through the mail, protect them with Registered Mail.

Items you sent with Registered Mail are placed under tight security from the point of mailing to the point of delivery, and insured up to $25,000 against loss or damage. And you can verify the date and time of delivery and the delivery attempts online.

Freke
this is crazy !!

hope they take care of it soon.

The person who signed for your package has committed a federal crime by not returning it! This is VERY SERIOUS and I hope they figure that out ASAP! It is against the law to open/keep mail that isn''t addressed to YOU!

I can''t believe everything you''ve been through all because some stupid postal carrier delivered your package to the wrong place....this person should be FIRED.....end of story!

My father was a postal worker for 30 years, in various positions from carrier to management, and he''s just as frustrated about this as I am.

I just KNOW this will work out and Big Blue will find her way....

Has it worked for you? Have you had bad experiences? Would you do it again?
I had the most horrible exerience with registered mail. I returned a product, and it took about 8 months for the package to get delivered. I had to call the postmaster everyday for a month at 5 a.m. (For some reason, the postmaster worked from 5 a.m.-2 p.m. and unless you called first thing in the morning, you could never speak to her.)The postmaster would always be busy and never return my call. For some reason, they had no idea where the package was even though it had a tracking number. So, I finally sent an e-mail threatening to sue, b/c it had been so long and they wouldn't reimburse me even though it was insured. After harassing them for a month at 5 a.m., the package miraculously showed up at the recipient's address. Fortunately for me, the vendor still gave me a refund even though it had been so long. So, now I just pay more and use UPS or Fed Ex if I need to send something important.

You know what''s sad? It would have been cheaper to send it via FedEx or UPS.

UPS left a $12K package at my front door.

Lol DF!!! My UPS guy is PARANOID.

We live in a complex of 21 units. The manager guy is always around doing yardwork or just trolling (as opposed to patrolling, he''s a little bit...odd) around, and there are only 6 units that share our gate, and the other 4 are upstairs--so I have my neighbor that has her front door 10 feet from mine and that''s it (trust her explicitly).

HE WON''T LEAVE PACKAGES AT MY DOOR. I''ve asked him to. And he won''t do it.

Since FI and I have such odd schedules, it''s rare that both of us are gone for more than a couple of hours at a time during the day, so if he did leave it, one of us would be home shortly. Dude has been my UPS guy for two years now. And I''ve ordered A LOT of shoes that come via UPS.

Eh well...better to be safe than sorry, right?

Like, say, delivering the damn package to the right address AND scanning it AND getting a signature!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats what I posted a few pages back that the package will be automatically insured, so even if it doesn''t turn up Freke should get reimbursed.

UPS would be easier, but not USPS.

Oh my gosh, Liz, that is just dreadful that it''s been tracked to a building and THEY SAY THEY CAN''T DO JACK.

Hopefully the guy who''s been on your side will kick some arse and you''ll get your things back--YOUR things, not some crappy bait-and-switch thing. GRRRRRRR.

Part of me wonders if the person delivering it took it and only says that s/he delivered it--that would explain why they won''t divulge who took it. Is that completely paranoid?

Not completely paranoid at all... and it may be part of the reason that, according to other posters, the person who''s found to be at fault for the loss may find themselves without a job.

Liz, I have only just read your thread and I am absolutely horrified for you. As an Englishwoman living in Canada, I have no advice for you - don''t understand your postal system rules or the law in general. Having said that, what about involving the press. If you could get a newspaper interested in your story, the potential bad publicity for the postal service and for the organisation who signed for your package would be most unwelcome.

I''m routing for you honey - mucho dusto!
