Royal Jewels

Hi, laurensmama,

The jewellery collection of the Portugese royal family is quite limited, I belive, because the bulk was confiscated and is now owned by the State. The current Duchess of Braganza seems to favour the diamond tiara and earrings that you mention.
Here is an old picture saying that the tiara, two beautiful necklaces and a binoculars originaly were a gift to Princess Amélie d'Orléans, later Queen of Portugal:

I suppose that this diamond necklace is (with the old tiara) my favourite piece of the collection:

I think that this picture was taken at the return banquet for the Presedent of Portugal, givven by The King and Queen of Sweden. The Porugese royals were invited by The King. The Duchess wore an aquamarine set and some tiara (sorry can''t identify it).

In Luxembourg for the GD couple''s wedding anniversary. Sorry I''m not sure what jewels were used:

Another necklace and the earrings used in Stockholm:

I think this one was taken at a Flower Ball or sth like that. HRH is wearing the convertiable choker (see Stockholm 2006):

Here is the last one I'll post - Queen Augusta Victoria wearing her lily-of-the-valley tiara by Boucheron, a diamond choker, a few pearl ropes and another favourite of mine - a diamond bow/knot brooch:

Here you can see a larger copy of the photo and some information about the jewels - Queen Augusta Victoria of Portugal |Rainha de Portugal Jóias| Jewels

Laurensmama, I hope these photos helped you. I also hope that others will post their pictures of the Portuguese royal jewels :)

I think this is the tiara that CP Mary wore once or twice and then it was auctioned for a good cause. Can anyone confirm this or give us more details?

Again, Mary looks stunning. I like the tiara, too

And speaking of CP Mary, I always liked these earrings:

Hi, Blackpaw!

I''ve posted a photo of The Crown Princess wearing the tiara at the time of Prince Henrik''s 75th birthday gala earlier this year. The tiara was part of an exhibition, featuring some Danish royal tiaras, and was borrowed by Princess Mary for the occasion. As Christiana said it was later sold. If I''m not mistaken it went for around 200.000 euros.

PS: Christina, thank you for the photo of the earrings. They''re one of my favourites from Mary''s collection.

Bobby

You''re both welcome, Bobby and Blackpaw

200,000 euros, huh?

Wow! Thanks for confirming this!

I'm not sure about the price but that's what comes to mind from a discussion on the RJWMB. I think the main reason was that the tiara was entirely handmade. Still for that much money one can buy a beautiful all-diamond tiara.

Changing topics....
I'm sure most of you have watched Elizabeth II's Christmas Video, but a picture hasn't been posted here. This year HM surprised us with a brooch last worn by her late mother, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. This pearl and diamond brooch was among the jewels left to The Crown by Queen Victoria. Lets hope that we'll see it more often in the future.

On 25th December The Windsors attended a Christmas Day service at Sandringham Church. The Queen wore the ruby and diamond brooch that Queen Elizabeth (QEQM) inherited from her friend Mrs. Greville. So far I haven''t realized that the brooch was actually so big:

The Duchess of Cornwall wore a new gold and coloured stones Peacock brooch, possibly given to her earlier that day. Anyway, this is Camilla''s gift to us:

Did anyone else where any jewels on Christmas day, the photos I saw were not too clear? Also does anybody know anything about or have a better picture of the bandeau Princess Anne was wearing at a state banquet (I believe India???). Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

On Youtube there is a video of norway''s royal jewels. It states that some of them have not been seen in years, is this due to change in style, personal preference, fragility, etc. or were they sold? Just curious.

Sorry, laurensmama, but unforutuanetely there aren't (at least I haven't seen) clear photos of that bandeau. I've only seen this close-up. It appears that The Princess Royal was wearing a gold band with (probably) 5 large pearls. It's hard to say whether the piece is part of the set (necklace and earrings), that the Princess wore, or is an old jewel from the family collection.

You might also like to see that video from the State Banquet - The Royal Channel - The Indian State Banquet

Here is again The Princess Anne. This time this is from last year's Christmas service at Sandringham. HRH's wearing gold star brooch with diamonds and a pair of pearl and gold earrings. Apart from the weird grimace this time I really liked Princess Anne's appearance:

HRH The Countess of Wessex wore lovely earrings with red stones. I hope these are real diamonds and rubies:

Here is the last person whose jewellery is easy to identify - Autumn Phillips, daughter-in-law of The Princess Royal, wearing long silver(?) spiral earrings (at least they look that to me).
I hope these pics satisfied you, Laurensmama:

Change of style and personal preferences are indeed a good reason. I haven't heard if the main line of the familly or The King's sisters have sold any jewels, and I hope they won't do so in the future. You must also have in mind that in the early 1990's the original Queen Maud's pearl tiara and some brooches were sold when they were sent to Garrard & Co's office in London for maintenance/cleaning. There is (was) also a beautiful diamond and pearl necklace that anyone since Queen Maud has worn.On her wedding to Peince Carl of Denmark, she received a ruby and diamond necklace, but I don't know of any pictures of anyone with that jewel. Recently Queen Sonja wore a big diamond flower brooch at the Nobel Prize Gala. This brooch is believed to have belonged to Queen Alexandra of GB and has been worn in public for the last time in Windsor Castle many, many years ago. We might just hope that old jewels will re-eppear in the New Year!

I'm curious to understand what the others think? Would you wear the grand family heirlooms just for the sake of The Glitter, or you'd reset the stones into something less glamourous, but better fitting your taste, or just forget about them and buy new jewels?

If I was a (royal) lady I'd certainly buy new jewels and continue using the old ones ;)

Bobby

The first royal gala of the new year - The Annual New Year's Court in Denmark, hosted by The Queen and The Prince Consort. TRH The CP Couple, TRH Prince Joachim and Princess Marie also attended.

Here is Margrethe II wearing The Rosenborg diamonds and The Pearl Poire tiara. My dream came true(with the exception of the tiara):

HRH The Crown Princess, as usual, wore the ruby tiara and earrings. This year, however, Mary wore the pendant from the stomacher on a chain around her neck:
