I think that the Queen looks lovely in this outfit. But three times the same dress in one year is a bit too much, imo.

Maybe the Queen is pinching euros in a recession, Cordata. The emeralds certainly look nice!

I like P. Margaret's turquoise pieces much better than the Keppel ones; they're beautiful & graceful imo. Perfect with that dress too.

These photos are from the Queen's 70th, I just think the girls are so pretty & their jewels & dresses wonderful.

I found this definition on the Smithsonian website. I never knew the formal difference between the 3 headpieces, neat to have.

A crown encircles the head in a complete circle and can be worn by men and women; diadems and tiaras are forms of crowns: a diadem is not a complete circle (usually ¾ way around), it has an opening in the back and can also be worn by men and women; a tiara (semi-circular high crown) is a smaller headpiece worn at the front of the head, by women only.

--- Laurie

ETA: The terms may be somewhat fluid -- wouldn't surprise me to find something labeled a diadem on, say, Sotheby's, that the Smithsonian would call a tiara. Like "parure" and "suite" and "demi-parure," might be varying uses from individual sources.

Thanks, Laurie, for the neat deffinition. I'd also add that a crown denotes power and thus should only be worn by monarchs.

I just understood that the Phillips babygirl has been named Savannah. I must admit I'm not keen on the name, especially for a royal)baby. Had hopes for either Elizabeth or Anne, why not even Mary or Victoria. I even considered Winter as a possibility.
What do you think?

PS: I apologize to all Savannahs who love their names and are reading this. It's just my old-fashioned taste.

I am with you on this one Bobby. I remember when the Duchess of York had her girls...I recall reading an article that said she and Andrew wanted to name their first daughter Annabel but the Queen deemed it to "yuppie" sounding. Ergo, the Queen has some say in names of royal babies. Sarah didn't want to do the traditional names of Elizabeth, Anne, Mary, or Victoria (and I think that the Prince of Wales nixed Victoria in case he and Diana had a girl) so she and Andrew had to find names that were different yet still royal...so we have Princess Beatrice and Eugenie of York.

The Queen must have not had much say in this one though...there are no royal Savannah's. Unless, you count the royal hunting lodge on the African Savannah.

Fail.

How do you suppose that dress....um....remains in place? Looks ominous to me!

Thank you for the photo, Alexander! The peral necklace is to die for. I hope everybody here who watched the concert enjoyed it.

How did you find the photo? GettyImages didn't show me any photos from the Emir and Sheikha Moza's visit to Austria...

I agree! The future Princess looks verynice with the jewels she wears. And I hope she'll be as succeccful with tiaras later this year and for many years after that.

The dress - Apparently it was not meant to be worn as a totally strap- or sleeveless dress. I mean look at this photo (link below) from the beggining of the ball. Probably the strap (or whatever you call it) fell when they were dancing? Anyway, I think it would've remained in place even without the straps.

No, silly! The name. "Savannah Phillips" could be the name of a **** star in the US. I don't know how we got from Princess this that and the other to "Savannah Phillips"; I guess Princess Anne, with all her best intentions, and her family would rather her offspring not have regal names. Mission accomplished.

I rather like Charlene's earrings! and I LOVE the name Savannah. Its so pretty and unique, a lot like Autumn and Zara.

Toupee tape is a common beauty pageant secret for holding dresses like this in place. It looks like one side was always meant to be down (this could have been held by the toupee tape), but the other side may have fell during the ball.

It could have been a lot worse...like this...

I saw that yesterday, Maria! What a hoot, poor fellow. Hard to imagine how that happened; he must've been very rushed!

Toupe tape, huh? I knew there was something they used but never could figure out what. Good idea.

To Lady Maria:

Lats hope the baby's full name isn't Savannah Winter Rainforest Phillips;) Now seriously, I think Savannah Elizabeth doesn't sound that bad. I beleieve the name's in the top 30 in the UK.
Danny, Wikipedia really knows about a **** star named Savannah...

Miss Wittstock's dress & toupee tape - thanks for the tip. I didn't know about that practice among bauty queens, and as it seems among (future) royalty. I wonder if Queen Silvia also used toupee tape in Brazil last year?

Today I came across this photo closer of Princess Marie of Denmark's earrings from the New Year's Court on January 1 - http://www.purepeople.com/media/en-l-absence-de-la-princesse-mary-sur_m535789
The link also provides us with a nice side view of her tiara.

Today two ather courts were held in Copenhagen - one for the Suprime Court of Justice and the other for the Corps Diplomatique. The Queen wore the large peral and diamond corsage brooch and what looks like the top part of the earrings from the pearl parure:

Here you can see more photos from today's Courts: http://www.billedbladet.dk/Kongelige/ArticleFolder/2011/1/Billeder flot og farverig nytarskur.aspx

Savannah is very popular! I had a class last year where 3 students were named Savannah! I agree, Savannah Elizabeth Phillips could work. Savannah Winter Rainforst Phillips...I shudder at the thought!

While I like the earrings, I'm not sure I like them with that dress. Seems to me like they clash. Now if the dress had been red or green, I think it would have looked a lot better.

I don't remeber if we've discussed this before, but in 2009 the President of Greece payed a State Visit to Denmark and at the State Banquet HM The Queen wore the Order of St. Olga & St. Sophia, which must've been bestowed to her at the time of the centenary of the Greek monarchy or another occasion, rather than the Order of the Redeemer (which according to the Royal House's site she also has). This, I believe, is an insult as StSt Olga & Sophia has been awarded to her by the monarchy and is not an order awarded by the current republic, but The former King only.
In her speech at the banquet, HM mentioned the Greek monarchy, sth by which she emphasised that the Coup d'Etat and her brother-in-law and sister's exile are still not forgotten. Do you think Queen Margrethe II wanted to further emphasize that by wearing a royal order?

Personally I think that Margrethe choose this order on purpose because she wanted to make a statement. Maybe you noticed that the Greek president is wearing his Order of the Elephant the wrong way. It is usually worn from the other shoulder. And I'm not convinced that he does this entirely by mistake. It might well have been his answer to the order of St. Olga & St. Sophia.

I know of at least one complaint they got! ;)

Not quite, Lady Maria, not quite. I know of more than one inaccuracy they have in their fixed article.

By order of the photos:
#1 they missed the second d in diamond in the Duchess of Teck Diamond Tiara (aka The Teck crescent tiara).
#3 The Strathmore Rose Tiara was a wedding present, but not in 1926 (when Elizabeth II was born). The Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth B-L married in 1923.
#6 the Girls of GB&I is no longer a diamond and pearl tiara, thougt in 1893 it did have pearls.
#7 The Countess of Wessex's tiara was made from elements of Queen Victoria's Regal circlet, not a necklace.
#8 The Princess Anne didn't borrow the Scroll tiara from The Queen, but from her grandmother Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. The tiara was eventually inherited by The Queen in 2002.
#9 The York tiara is, I suppose, still the property of Sarah, Duchess of York, so it's more than unlikely that Catherine will ever get to wear it.

I was just referring to the really big mistake of calling the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara the Cambridge Lover's knot. One battle at a time, right??

Thanks, I hadn't noticed that the Greek president's wearing the Elephant in the wrong way. At least he's wearing the star of the order the right way. Do you know if anyone in Denmark commented on this (the orders) after the banquet/state visit?
