Royal Jewels

the Queen Mother

Maria-You're right I did see the exhibit in Grand Rapids. I was in Michigan and Indiana visiting friends. I saw a billboard on the exhibit and just had to go. All of the proceeds go to Diana's Charities so that made it even better. Lastly, Littlestinker was a teenage nickname my exhusband gave me that has just stuck; he said it discribed my personality, playfully mischievous. it was also my CB handle in the 70's (telling my age aren't I?) and I now use it for email and such. I can't seem to find anything that fits as well. Thanks to you and everyone else for such a warm welcome. I am usually a "lurker" but I couldn't resist joining you guys.

Alexander, thanks for putting up that pic of Diana. I've never seen it. Still am not crazy about the tiara, though. Even she can't make it graceful.

Haha! Just the other day I was thinking when someone will post the photo. I'm sorry I have to disappoint you, guys, but this is a photomontage. A good one actually.

Last month the photo was discussed on RJWMB and the poster/person who has created it said he has seen it a few times on the internet since he originally posted it there. I have also posted it here.

But Laurie is right - the tiara (in its old form) didn't suit the then Princess of Wales, even if it's just a montage...

here's some of my favorites of the late Queen Elizabeth - the rubies came back to light during the visit to Oman last year

Thanks for the photos, Alexander! I think they were all by Sir Norman Hartnell, who certanly creathed some of the best dresses for the royal ladies. The ruby set has always been a favourite of mine.
One of my all time favs of Hartnell is the dress HM wore at the British Embassy in Paris in 1938.
You can see it here among other dresses from Queen Elizabeth's white wardrobe - http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/eGallery/maker.asp?maker=11712

This is one of my favorite photo sessions, where The Queen wears her "Winterhalter" inspired dresses and Queen Victoria diamonds.
It was 1939 Spring, I believe?
HM wore even the largest gems with such an aplomb that one never notices how petite she was.
I can't think of any other petite woman of the contemporary royal ladies, with the same gift.
Thank you for posting this!

Littlestinker,I think there is no one who ever received less than a warm welcome here.
Rules are always a good idea, they create safe borders I believe.
Perhaps we'll set an example for the World out there? We seem to be a very happy United Nations here! :-)

OMG I am so technically challenged! lol How on Earth do you do this , Bobby!? The quality is superb! Now we can actually enjoy the stones! Thank You!!!
I love the aquamarines in the parure of the Dutch royal family, although they are very pale.[the aquamarines :-)...]

Are these white dresses the ones that were made to replace the wardrobe she had made for the first official royal tour after Queen Elizabeth and King George were crowned? There was a whole wardrobe made for the trip, then the Queen's father died. Hartnell was called in to do a whole new wardrobe in white as it was considered a mourning color, and as such was felt to be better than appearing at an important tour wearing only black.

Do you mean the HQ photos that I post from time to time? Well, lets say that I know where to find them...
Bea's photo, for example, is from the Dutch Royal House's website - http://www.koninklijkhuis.nl/english/ - and I simply copied and pasted the URL here.

As to the Dutch aquamarines, I love them too. Not to mention that I love Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery (of which "the parure" is an example).

Bobby

The answer is Yes and No.
Yes because the wardrobe had to be changed due to a death (and I think this was indeed TM's first overseas visit after the 1937 Coronation). And No because it wasn't The Queen's father, but her mother, Cecilia, who had died less than a month before the start of the State Visit.
Of course, white and purple are still considered suitable for mourning, along with black.

Yesterday HM Queen Margrethe II and HRH The Prince Consort arrived on a 3 day state visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain. At the welcoming ceremony, HM wore three rows of pearls, her favourite pearl and diamond bar brooch and diamond earrings:
Later The Queen wore the sapphire and diamond fleur-de-lis brooch:

Thank you Bobby for correcting a misstatement I made regarding which parent had died. It is important to get details straight and I was thinking it was the father but should have checked before posting. Thanks too for the link to the tiara photos. The details of those photos are wonderful!

I also remember the days of ham radio...my dad had the whole set up as well. I'm glad there other people my age out here posting on royal jewels!!

Not than I don't love all you youg'uns too!

So as some of you may guess, the fact that I am posting today instead of being on an airplane means that my flight was cancelled. I'm pretty bummed, but Mother Nature still rules the planet and isn't going to change her plans so I can see the Diana exhibit. We still have the ice, but last night we got 6 inches of snow on top of it. For those of you who are used to snow in the winter, this may not seem like a lot. To a native Texan, it is a near disaster. Being from up north, this usually provides many amusing sights for me, such as:

1. People using their credit cards as ice scrapers
2. Driving

and my personal favorite

3. Watching people pour boiling water on their windshields to melt the ice, then wondering why their windshield shatters

So now I got to plan B: the exhibit goes to Kansas City next, and I will be making plans with a cousin to see it then. It will be after school lets out so I won't need to take time off too!

Ah yes, I have a cousin in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area that needs to shovel his driveway, but does not own a snow shovel (hasn't ever had the need for one). A creative person suggested that he duct tape a dustpan to a broom handle. Living in Northern California, I just wonder how many difficulties the folks in snowblasted areas have to face that I can't even imagine. Best wishes and positive thoughts to all of you that are in the east. Hope things get better for you soon!

So sorry about the delay of your trip, Maria. Here are some pictures from the exhibit catalog. Hope they cheer you up!

These pictures are a little misleading; the coronet is quite small (will fit in an open hand) compared to the Tiara which is much bigger.

someday I'll figure out how to put more than one picture per post...

last one. I'm not sure what's in the picture on the right is used for.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Maria. I really hoped you'd be able to visit the exhibition in Grand Rapids! But don't forget that you'll see it later in Kansas City. People like me will likely never be able to see it in their own country. I think the closest destination has been Croatia, but who knows - if I write a nice letter to Lord Spencer and tell him that many people here would like to see this exhibition, maybe someday the dress and the jewels will come here.

Regards,
Bobby

Littlestinker, I don't know about Maria, but these photos cheeres me up for sure! Thank you very much. I didn't know there were so many jewels exhibited.
BTW, the text below the diamond bangle sais it was a present from Queen Alexandra. Is it known what the relationship between the Countess and the Queen was (friends, confidants, lady-in-waiting)?

I have mixed feelings seeing these picures. Part of me wants to cry that I won't be seeing tomorrow with my mom. The other part of me is going to make darn sure that I book a trip to Kansas City to see the exhibit!!

I have a question to put out here: I know Queen Elizabeth owns personal jewels separate from jewels considered to be owned by the Crown. Does anyone know if the three diamond bow brooches commissioned for Queen Victoria are part of the Queen's personal jewels? Or are they considered part of the state collection? Thanks a lot.

when I remember right QV left them to the Crown " for every future Queen" - so the sovereign held them this items in trust for the next generation - the sovereign coul'nt sell them etc.
I think they are part of the Royal Collection (jewels, objects d'art, funiture, silver, paintings...)

crown jewels are thos in the tower

Thanks for the pics, LS! I'll take the pearl bracelet w/the enamel & diamond clasp, yum, the diamond bracelet from Q.Alexandra & the emerald cross, pretty design. Hard to tell but it looks like the tourmaline in the ring has either been badly used or is quite included.

Maria, so sorry about your trip! Disappointing -- but at least you'll be able to see the exhibit and without sacrificing vacation time. It will be even more of a thrill for all the patience it took to get there. When we lived in Amsterdam, the Tutankhamun exhibition went to NYC & I was inconsolable to miss it. (18th dynasty Egyptian history & beauties has been a passion since I was about 10.) A few months later I read it was going to be in Frankfurt. Called up our German distributor & said, "You need to see me, don't you? Big problem you want me to solve...in...oh, about 3 weeks from now." "No we don't. We do?? Oh, yes, of course, we need you to come!!" They were so great. The delight of seeing that magnificent throne & the funeral mask was double for nearly having not done so.

Thanks, Alexander -

I had seen the Wikipedia article as well, but was still uncertain if the brooches belonged to the Crown or to the Queen's personal collection. I think some of Victoria's pieces are in the private collection, such as Albert's sapphire wedding brooch, but was unsure about the bow brooches. This can get confusing!! Thanks again for the info.
