Just reviewing the other Diana exhibition jewelry and realized the Spencer Earrings weren't in the catalog but were on display with the dress. They were Diana's "something borrowed" on her wedding day. They looked almost yellow in person.

They're even more beautiful up close than I'd imagined, Thanks for the lovely photo, littlestinker. Aren't they Art Deco?

of course I have some

The Queen's Jewels Field
Royal Jewels Menkes
Jewels of the Tsar Pr. M. of Greece
the Jewels of the Romanows Papi
Tiaras Munn
dankse kongehuis (danish but understandable)

most could be found at amazon or ebay

Yes, of couse, how could I forget Stefano Papi and Prince Michail's books... By the way, Papi, Prince Michael and Princess Maria Gabriella have a joint book about the jewels of the House of Savoy. That sounds quite delicious to me.

I have a question about Jewels of the Tsars - Obviously this is a book about the jewels of the Romanovs, but does the Prince cover any jewels with Romanov provenece in other European royal courts? I know Queen Olga's turquoise parure is mentioned, but did HRH also write about his grandmother's emeralds? Or some jewels that are currently in Britain and Luxembourg for that matter?

Thanks in advance,
Bobby

just relooked at the Jewels of the Tsars
there're many good photos of items seldom seen f.e. Empress Alexandra Sapphires parure, the MF Wave Pattern Tiara and necklace, Faberge eggs and items, the Crown reglia, Ellas and Miechens emeralds
it's partend in the reigns of tsars from Catherine II to Nicholas II and after 1917 wereabout f.e. MP Pearl Circlet Tiara (Q Mary), Olga of Yougoslavia, Princess Irina and so on.

Olga's Greece emeralds are not mentioned in detail. as I think they went early to Greeece. But some of the Ruby stuff of Marie Edingburgh is pictured

which is a real pitty as I want to let them make the greek emerald Tiara in fakes and need some good detailed pic for that.

Thanks for the effort and for the quick reply, Alexander. Very much appreciated! All you say sounds very intersting. Now I regret for not having this book, yet someday I probably will buy it...

Two more questions - What Romanov jewels of Princess Olga are mentioned? Presumably her grandmother's large Cartier diamond tiara, something else? And who's Princess Irina? The daughter of a Grand Duke, or is that Irina Yussupova?
And what did/does Maria Alexandrovna's sapphire parure look like? Is it the one Maria Pavlovna wore, or are these the sapphire jewels that Victoria Feodorovna (Ducky) wore?

PS: Are you building a private collection of replicas of royal jewels? ;)

Once again Thanks!
Bobby

no problem, it was just at my hand. Irina Yussopov (Xenia's daughter). Maria Coburg's Ruby which was a present from her father.

What books do you recommend to learn more about royal jewels with detailed history and GREAT photos? Even if they are out of print. Bobby?? Thanks

There are two Munn books, both of which are a must for the die-hard tiara person:
1. Tiaras: A History of Splendor
2. Tiaras: Past and Present

I also have Crown Jewels of Europe by Prince Micheal of Greece. This book takes you a bit off the beaten path with lesser known crown jewels.

I also highly recommend "World Royal Families" by Riley, Forty, and Millidge. While there is not as much about jewels, it has a ton of history of the royal families, both reigning and non-reigning. Every family has a family tree and it shows how intricately the royal families of Europe are related.

Enjoy!

I got both. but for me the Past and Present is a smaller book of the larger (and detailed) A History of Splendor (which was mainly the catalouge to the V&A exhibition - think it was 2002 , I'm not sure.)

I just got The Queens Jewels: Leslie Fields and Tiaras:Past and Present by Munn, Loving the Queens Jewels but I think I am going to return T:PandP and just use that money to splash out on Tiaras:A History of Splendor. Actually this is the perfect place to ask, are the tiaras in Past and Present also included in a History of Splendor?

So how many soi-disant princes and princesses do we have here now? LOL!

I think they used the same pictures from the large boog for the smaller one. It's just a question of the price. I sold my PaP copy some times ago.

For the most part, if you get Tiaras History of Splendor you will get most everything from Tiaras Past and Present. The ones that come to mind that you won't get are more modern ones, like the beechwood tiara modeled by the Vicountess Linley and some acryllic tiaras by Vivienne Westwood.

You wrote Empress Alexandra, but I read Empress Maria Alexandrovna... Of course I'm familiar with Empress Alexandra Feodorovna's parure with Ceylone sapphires.
Here's a photo of the necklace:
And the brooch:

If it's not a secret, replicas of which royal jewels do you have so far?

Does anybody know what tiara is Princess Alice wearing in this photo? I doesn't look like any of the other 3 tiaras I've seen her wearing.

Does anyone have a photo of the beechwood tiara designed by Lord Linley for his wife Serena? I don't believe I have ever seen it. Thanks.

Not the most attractively named link, but I found one of the birchwood tiara.

Forgot to mention that this is Serena, Viscountess Linley, as I'm sure you probably guessed.

What is it made of, gold? Kind of nice, though not blingy.

I am assuming that you are asking about the birchwood tiara, Laurie?

It is carved out of birchwood. No bling at all. This may seem "cheap" as Feeshalori's link said, but when I saw some close up pictures of it I find it pretty amazing that the whole tiara is carved out of one piece of wood. It's really quite intricate woodword and I think Vicountess Linely wears it well. I've never seen her wear it in public (I've only seen her wear the papryus tiara she wore at her wedding). The picture was part of a promo for Viscount Linley's furniture line.

Its not ment to be worn in public, it was just a very smart and well done ad for his business. Playing on his royal connections a bit, but in a very nice and unique way. I'm not a fan of Viscount Linley at all but have always enjoyed this photo and woodtiara.

Bobby- Diana's wedding earrings do have a deco feel to them. When I saw them at the ehibit I almost didn't recognize them, they looked so yellow( so different on Diana). Don't know why, but they are beautiful either way! I've attached a picture of Diana wearing the earrings for comparison. it's not the best view, so I'll try to find a better picture.

Oh, I got it wrong, Maria -- I thought "birchwood tiara" meant it had birch-type leaves of gold or something! Haha. For an ad, it's quite clever.

BTW Bobby -- I LOVE alexandra's sapphire necklace -- thanks for putting it up. Thought I'd seen most of her jewelry (if possible with the amount she had!) but this doesn't look familiar. Beauuuutiful.

Thank you for the reply, littlestinker!

Today is the 9th anniversary of Princess Margaret, Css of Snowdon's death. May HRH rest in piece!

You're welcome! I also like it... Well, I loke the whole parure, actually. What a pity that there isn't a singe photo of her wearing it.
Sometimes I wonder what happened with all those jewels that the Soviets sold?

BTW, I'll post a photo of David Linley's tiara in Tiaras!

Bobby

Is there a separate site for Tiaras in the Royal Jewels forum? If so, would someone please put the site address on this forum?

Thanks in advance!

Queen Mary must have gotten about half of them, LOL! I suppose the pieces we can't trace were bought by various '20s millionaires & smaller nobles, of which there were many. Maybe a lot was sold & broken up during the Depression & re-used, or later. Don't you wonder if magnificent items still sit in safe-deposit boxes somewhere?

The shop A La Vielle Russie in NYC was founded to sell jewelry of Russian refugees. They also, I believe, bought at auction things put up by the Soviet gov't. Even in the 70s when I lived in NY, they had gorgeous Russian jewelry & precious boxes, chandeliers, etc. Used to wander around & eat my heart out. Still in existence but now I believe they sell more general-origin things than they do Russian.

These pictures are amazing. Oh the colors.
I do like all the other women wearing the jewels I'm sick of seeing Camilla she needs to learn how to dress

Queen mum is lovely.

Well we got another foot orb snow in northern oklahoma :wavey:

Whoopee!! Thanks Bobby. I'm getting a cup of tea and plan to sit back and savor both the tiaras and tea.

I had a strange dream last night that you will all appreciate.

My dream was that William and Catherine got married today. They purposely told everyone April 29 but really got married today to have a small wedding.

In my dream, her dress was off the shoulder like CP Victoria, but it was heavily beaded. The skirt was very full and was satin with a sheer organdy over it. The organdy was embroidered with snowflakes (did I mention school was cancelled yesterday due to more ice and snow?).

Her veil looked a lot like the Duchess of York....scalloped edges and very full and billowing.

She wore a tiara in my dream, and the really disturbing part was that it was the tiara that MABEL of all people wore for her wedding! Mabel is my least favorite royal becuase of the circumstances with her marrying the Ducth Prince Johan Friso and her horrific fashion sense (one word: BOW). We had a great discussion on Mabel earlier in this thread...I'll see if I can find the pages later.

I know what you're thinking...what in the world did I eat before I went to bed and will I share it!?!
