Royal Jewels

so what did Prince Charles give Diana for a wedding present in the way of jewelery?

The diamond & sapphire tassel -- the pic you found is probably this one; I couldn't come up with another of her wearing this necklace. Interesting question. I don't recall seeing this before. Don't know if she owned it or if it was borrowed from a jeweler, perhaps, as she did with the giant amethyst cross from Garrard and the Collingwood necklace & earrings. Anybody else know more about this?

Diana did own this necklace, though the provenance is not known. I have only seen her wearing it as necklace once - in 1985 (your photo) and several times she has worn it as bracelets. I hope we'll see them again not after long.

I've read in a few places the Charles gave Diana the emerald and diamond drop earrings (she wore them with the emerald choker alot) and an art deco diamond and emerald bracelet.

Diana didn't wear rubies a lot. She had the ruby tassel necklace and her gorgeous many-strand pearl choker w/diamond & ruby spacers, and in the picture of her in the red dress arriving at the Venice Biennale, she has on a beautiful ruby necklace that I haven't seen before or since. Borrowed, anyone? I think she had ruby drop earrings, or ruby drops for diamond earrings too, don't have photos of them.

--- Laurie

To my knowledge, Diana, Princess of Wales owned the tassel necklace and earrings, but obviously didn't wear them a lot (the necklace only once). She did wear the earrings in their original state at least a couple of times and also a couple of times with pearl drops instead of the tassels.
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the ruby necklace from the Biennale in Venice, but only time will show us if it really belonged to Diana or was on loan.
As to the ruby drops, well if you mean these, then probably you'll be a bit disapointed when you read that they were not real. Lady Diana also had drops with blue and green stones.

Does anybody know something about the dog collar with the diamond and ruby spacers? Was it made for the Princess of Wales or was it perhaps a Windsor heirloom (Queen Alexandra's)?

Last week the Ovation channel showed a program entitled "Diana her life in Jewels" dated 2007. Has anybody else seen it? The moderator was a voice I recognized from show I've seen on BBC America, but there were several inaccuracies, such as identifying two different pairs of pearl earrings as the same; one shot stated she was wearing pearl earrings when they were clearly aquamarines. Anything sapphire was identified as part of the Saudi wedding gift and the amethyst she wore were called sapphires. I am by no means and expert, It's just frustrating to see such errors.

Bobby-I've never seen that choker on anyone but Diana. Still, it could've been "in the vault" so to speak...we may never know for sure.

Good morning, am home from work suffering from strep throat, on the computer. At dianajewels.net i saw a diamond and sapphire tassel necklace worn by Diana. This is a very interesting website does any know anything about this particular necklace that can be converted to two bracelets or any of the ruby jewelery not seen as often. Also does anyone have a photo of the emerald art deco set Charles gave Diana as a wedding gift. Heard that Diana did not care for it so she did not wear it in public is that true? Thanks.

I wouldn't say she didn't care about the set. Diana wore the emeralds frequently with the Cambridge choker and the PoW feather pendant/brooch. But she did wear her sapphires more often than any of her other jewels.

BTW, you can see the earrings and the bracelet (that's the entire set) in Laurie and littlestinker's photos.

This is a slightly better picture of her emerald bracelet. I think the earrings in this picture were on loan from the Queen. I've only seen photos from two occasions.

I was acually asking because of an old photo of Queen Alexandra, but after counting the rows in both dog collars, I realised that QA's had 9 rown and Diana's 11. There's also a slight difference in the design (or the way they're worn).

Re. the documentary - I have watched it on Ypu Tube a couple of years ago and was kind of fascinated by all the info and bling there. But that was in the begginig of my mania for royal jewels and, of course, many things I didn't know then. I watched it some time later (last year) and then was irraped by all the inaccuracies the commentator made. I remeber thinking then that most of us here would be able to make a more reliable documentary.

I doubt they were on loan from Her Majesty. At least I have never seen her wearing them. To me this pair of earrings is a mystery. And as you, I have seen them on Diana twice.

For what it's worth, here's another photo of the Art Deco emerald and diamond bracelet. BTW, Charles purchased the emerald jewels fron Wartski.

It's a bit too late for this here in Bg, but on 16th February HRH Princess Alexandra (Joséphine Teresa Charlotte Marie Wilhelmine) of Luxemboug turned 20 years of age. I hope the young Princess had (or will have) a wonerfull birthday and lets hope we'll see her more often with grand jewellery.

To mark the occasion, the Grand Ducal site has published some lovely photos of the Princess. Please take a look at them here - http://www.monarchie.lu/fr/Galerie/Evenements/2011/02/PrAlexandra20ans/index.php?pos=0

Was wondering does anyone have a photo of Princess Anne (Princess Royal) engagement rings. I know her first one from Mark Philips was sapphire and diamond but have not seen a great picture of it. Have never seen an engagement ring from Timothy Lawrence.

Here is a closer-up photo of the ruby earrings w/pearl drops. They could be replaced by ruby tassels, right, Bobby? Haven't been able to turn up any info on the origin of the choker & I've always wondered. It's possible Diana bought it for herself. Or it could have been made from other jewels in the Royal vault, though I think if that were true, or if it belonged to Q. Alexandra, we would have seen it reported.

P.S. Isn't Luxembourg P. Alexandra adorable!!!

I find the story behind Queen Alexandra and her chokers interesting (hiding the scar on her neck).

I've seen the Diana Jewels documentary on youtube and yes, I picked up on a few mistakes as well. What I did learn though was the importance of the pearl choker in the Spencer family. I didn't know about that before. The Spencer choker story is also mention in the Royal Jewels book by Menkes.

Princess of Puke is on duty...the tiara is out because I'm home with a sick kid who feels like he's going to throw up

I think blue (saphire, auqamarine etc) matched better than green (emerald)

here a nice pic of a "green outfit" - best I think

for the question about the PoW and Di's wedding gift. there is nothing mentioned about a gift for this special day. Later he gave her some "memory" jewels. bracelets, earrings, pentdants to mark wedding day , birth of children etc (a pendent (?) or something like this with "William" in Charles handwriting.

Here is my all time favorite green outfit for Diana. Since this was an engagement photo though, she wouldn't have had the Cambridge choker yet. She borrowed the necklace and earrings from the Queen.

While I think Diana looked best in blue (especially with her eyes) green is a close second for me.

Agree with you and Alexander - blue and green suited Diana, but I think that red also looked good on her (well, most things did, anyway).

I'll have to correct you - the necklace and the earrings weren't a loan from the Queen. In fact they were borrowed from the jewellers Collingwood for the occasion and Lady Diana wore the necklace once more during the engagement peariod.

Do you, guys, think Diana might be wearing the dress from the engagement photos here?

Yes, the pearl drops could be replaced by diamond and ruby tassels. In fact, the tassels are the original version. Perhaps they were removable from the begginign and Diana simply had a drop pearl added the top section. But that's only a speculation on my part.

The late Princess of Wales wearing the ruby and diamond tassel earrings:

PS: Agree with you about Princess Alexandra!

I have also not seen a great photo of Phillips' ring. You may've seen this photo already:
And since the remarriage, I think this is the ring HRH wears on her left hand's ring finger. Obviously Tim chose something smaller, again with a sapphire and diamonds.

Bobby, I think yes, she does. When you look at the cut of the top, it is the same.
Hues of colors as we all know depend on the printer, so no concern there. Also as she sits, her skirt I
assume was arranged to look larger.

Oh my, Principessa, the 2nd photo -- that's a real tower on her head! I could use a few of the necklaces Saturday night, would go very well with my jeans & turtleneck. Heck, I'd wear them with my pajamas if necessary!

Thanks for the pic of the ruby tassel earrings, Bobby. I like them. Agree that the green dress is the same as the engagement pictures, same shoulder bows, same neckline & waist. Very pretty one.

The first photo is the 2nd time I've seen Charlene Wittstock wearing that necklace. Anyone have an idea what it is? Hard to tell if it's even stones; it looks a little like ball fringe. I'm curious -- it's different & works well on her, whatever it's made of.

The 2nd pic really got my attention. She has a wonderful & unique sense of style -- it takes a lot of self-assurance to wear a dramatic dress like that & without a single item of jewelry, especially in a milieu where most women will be sparkling like crazy. Gotta hand it to Charlene, she knows what she's doing.

Diana looked so beautiful in your first picture, Bobby. I am inclined to think that she is indeed wearing the same dress in the second picture, but how sad - this was when her eating disorder was very evident. The sleeves would maybe have been pulled down to cover her very skinny arms and the neckline of the dress just sags. Just heartbreaking.

Do you know what they do with pictures of royal members that have died or divorced. They do so many different ones?

The center stone is 3 carats and there are five smaller stone on each side.

Thanks for keeping me on my toes Bobby!

I am still trying to decide if the dress is the same. The engagement photo seems like the dress is more low-cut than teh second pictire. Also, in the second picture the sleeves look floppy, not puffy like the engagement photo. The second dress seems like a slightly brighter shade of green.

So I'm still a bit torn!
