I spoke to Alan at Sheldon Speyer who was the MOST FABULOUS and helpful person of ANY setting manufacturer I have ever spoken to (and if you''ve followed my saga you know there have been quite a few) regarding the setting below. They can change the basket to accomodate a split prong at negligible or no charge. They recommend against adding the tapered baguette at the end as it will considerably decrease the comfort of the setting, but if I really want them to they will.

They suggested that I try the ring on as is... and recommended a jeweler in San Fran (Old and New on Union) that is one of their best vendors and said that they would be happy to ship either the setting... or if they don''t have that, the wax of the setting to them for me to see. And then I could decide on what modifications need to be made, if any (beyond the prongs which are a given).

And I''ve been ring and setting shopping for days (which is why I was hoping for a GTG soon so I could have some PS input on the rings on my finger) and I really really think this one is it. I can''t get it out of my mind. At all. halos have flown out the window and everything. Weird.

It''s very classic, a little deco like my asscher with very fine millgrain and french cut side stones, and it has bling... and won''t have pave issues. And the price is fairly reasonable although I will have to save a bit more for it, and delay some of my redecorating plans for the time being. It''s all hand made. The the cost between platinum and 18K gold was negligible so it''ll be platinum!

It will, also look good with the baguette eternity band FMIL passed down to me (once I get that repaired), which makes me very happy.

SO... it''s going to be a little time before the store can get the wax/setting in. Then I will need to work out any modifications. Then it will take 6-8 weeks to get in.

SO I''m very happy. And while I need to see the ting in person... I think, ladies and gents-- this gypsy''s setting travels are at an end.

Gypsy, that is VERY exciting news! I think you are going in a great direction. Those are very fine quality rings! Don''t forget to take a camera when you go see the setting!

Gypsy, isn't it MARVELOUS when you finally find the right setting?! Can't wait for pics of the real thing!

aw gypsy, I''m not sick of your setting saga at all. you are one of the few who can relate to my own saga

..

I''m just so happy for you. I love sheldon speyer rings and know you''d be very happy with the quality and workmanship. I hope you love it in person as much as the pics!! You are going to have one gorgeous ring girl!!!!

Yay for Gypsy! I can't believe it
I don't know if you are asking but give you my 1.5 cents anyway

I think it's perfect for you, french sides add something definitely! But i would not millgrain side bezels and would split prongs to the double claws.

So Irina''s vote is for no milgrain on the side bezel and no split prongs? Maybe just pointy prongs like Turtles?

I think it will be fab Gypsy!

I know it''s not perfect, but I''ll be in the SF area at the end of July...would be happy to go bling shopping/looking with you when I''m in town if you still need someone!

Hey NeatFreak... I spoke to the jeweler and he said I would most likely be looking at the end of July to get the setting or wax in... so that would be lovely. If any others are available I think it would be fun to do a GTG then in San Fran (lots of bling to go see!!) at the same time. I''m hoping that a) their price is the same or lower than GOG (got a qoute) b) that I will be able to put half down to start the process, and give them the other half when it is done. If the price is higher (plus tax) I might just have GOG do it as I totally trust them, and there would be no sales tax.

Sorry Gypsy i was not clear, i do like split prongs for your asscher and that ring.
About millgrain - i love it on the deco's assher setting because it's more detailed, your ring is different...again, please disregard it's only my personal taste.

It''s beautiful, really beautiful. I think either split prongs or single prongs would be really pretty on that setting, but either way I would make them pointy. I think this would really help the design.

great news! i agree with irina. i like the split prong but would not do miligrain. jmho.

here are your Turtles prongs, i like them too, why i suggested doubles - because i think they would sing along with 2 side stones on each side.

i am very exited for you

ooo, I LOVE the ring with the prongs like turtles...

Yay Gypsy! I''m so excited for you! I hope you love that setting in person as much as the pictures! It''s beautiful. I''d love to go bling shopping with you. Most of my summer weekends are busy but hopefully we can plan a GTG on a day I''m free.

FUN! FUN!!!

I think I read too fast though ... are you seeing one in person soon or did you already see it in person??

I think it''s a groovy setting & perfect for an asscher!

RE: PRONGS -- when I was working on my re-DECO project I thought a lot about prongs. I didn''t want split prongs, can''t tell you why exactly ... I think they look great on larger stones but not on ones my size. I''ve ALWAYS love the pressed tab kind of prongs for asschers -- as seen on one of my fave asscher rings (attached) ... that''s the photo I took to the jeweler to demo what I wanted ... however, when I got there they had an EC set with nearly invisible prongs ... so that was another cool option. In the end I have pretty subtle not too blobby single prongs as that''s what they were able to execute & thought would hold the stone securely w/o a cross bar being added. What I like -- it kind of squares off the asscher, they''re very even (unlike my original), they pretty much dissapear in real life. What I don''t like -- I like the "idea" of tab prongs better. Oh well.

RE: MILGRAIN -- I could go either way on this for your ring ... it would add a nice, soft antique quality to the ring -- or a clean edge would just modernize it a tish. I love both options really ... modern would contrast with the french cut bags ... milgrain would make a whole deco look. Can''t decide!!!

Do you have a pix of the wedding band???

Hmmm. pix didn''t show up ... take two??

I did have a pic of the wedding band but it's all Xed out on the old thread now... this is similar only hers has little squares of WG between each baguette so each one is individually set in it's own bezel. A couple of the baguettes are cracked so I have to have them replaced...and I need to see if they can file the inside of the ring down just a little so that it's a tiny bit larger. But hopefully as I'm dieting and excercising my fingers will slim down a bit before we get married. It's a 5.5 and I'm a 6 so it's a little snug.

baguette%20eband2.JPG

Deco... those prongs are like nothing I've ever seen before.

Irina I do really like Turtles prongs and I think they go very well with that setting. ... If I go for claw prongs it won't be like leon's long thin pointy ones but smaller more discreet ones. But your pic has me leaning toward turtle prongs.

I really like the milgran myself. So I think I'm going to keep that. I was actually thinking of adding some onto the wedding band to match... but that one I'm not positive about.

Snlee... I would definitely love to see you again, so when I have some news (jeweler will get back to me tomorrow) I'll let you know what dates are a possibility so that hopefully you can make it.

deco, holy crap! That ring is amazing!! I love those prongs. Gypsy, what about flat-edged prongs at each of the four corners of your Asscher? The claw prongs you like seem a bit chunky in size and perhaps flat edged prongs would look less obtrusive? Maybe Irina can photoshop them onto your ring to see what it would look like with flat edge prongs? I''m not sure about the millegrain either. If you had a wband that had it, then it would tie in but if your bag eband is smooth channel set, then perhaps no millegrain would look cleaner on your ering? It''s a really pretty setting!

Gypsy, sounds great! I would love to meet the Bay Area PSers during my trip! And I think that ring will be gorgeous with whatever type of prongs you choose. They all are gorgeous.

Deco, that ring is my favorite of all time!!! I have it tucked away somewhere in my ring file for when we eventually have the $ for an upgrade. If I still love it as much that''s the way I''m going!

MMMEEEEE TOOOOOOO ... except that now it's possibly tied with Surfgirl's one-of-a-kind beauty that could never be replicated. SOB!

ETA: The Asscher photo is from Nelson Rarities' website. It's a long-ago sold genuine antique ring (because believe me I inquired about it during my own hunt!!!

Hehe. Surfgirl''s is just stunning too. This one though, I don''t know what it is, but it just does something for me. Where did you get the picture from?

I''m such a bad girl that I already have a folder for the "upgrade" and we just got engaged!

Great NF and snlee we''ll try to arrange it then!

I think split prongs would look even better than the pointy turtle prongs. Also, I think the milgraining on the sides is what I am ambivalent about - something on the setting had me going 'hmmph' and that might be it. I think the look would be more fluid without the milgraining on the sides. It sounds crazy because I LOVE the look of milgrain, but I think it detracts from the setting as it is right now.

BTW, congrats on picking a setting of course!!!

Thank you FG... any chance of your attending a GTG at the end of July?

End of July might work for me!

Hi Gypsy,

I don''t know if you have dealt with them before, but I have purchased several things from Old and New over the years, and think they are terrific. They have been very good to deal with and very honest. FWIW, IMO it''s good that the vendor is sending you to them.

It''s going to be a gorgeous ring!

Well, I am a milgrain whore so the more the better for me!
31.gif
Seriously though it is a beautiful setting. I hope it all works out smoothly so we can see hand shots soon!!!

22, 23, 29, 30th anyone???

Thanks for the recommendation lop... is it a blingy store that a bunch of PSers would enjoy hanging out in???
