Somebody's Gotta Buy This Piece!

IMG_7359.jpeg

Somebody please put me out of my misery? 2cttw, size 7.75, $1450. I LOVE that basket weave- like design, but I’m sure that band woul be too wide for me.

Omg that 5ct asscher!!! I just need it to be a bit bigger hahahaha

I bought it! Confirming it was not the price you last saw LOL. I’m obsessed with antique Tiffany though, and this setting is exquisite and seems like such an amazing contender for an engagement ring. Except I wasn’t thinking about the fact that it would take something close to an eight carat OMC to fill that center!! I’m going to get it and see what might make sense.

I also won a second lot of two platinum and diamond Art Nouveau settings, which I bid on as a back up and accidentally won. Look how sweet those designs are! These hold around 7mm-8mm stones.

I’m not sure if I’ll keep all of them, but I suppose I have some searching to do in the meantime!

I also did some digging into this auction and it’s actually super fascinating. The owner was a philanthropist who collected everything from rare art to jewels for many decades. Most of the items haven’t seen the open market in over 30 to 40 years, and they’ve had about five different auctions to sell everything over the past six months. 100% of the proceeds from the auctions are going to charities close to the family’s heart. I love knowing that the money I spent is going to good causes - I read that this woman sadly lost her child to cancer many years ago. Here is the article for anyone who’s interested to learn more!

Anyway - open to any and all ideas about what to fill these guys with!!!

I just saw you bought the Tiffany -congrats its lovely! I was planning on bidding but ended up with some nasty bug so it was the furthest thing from my mind. Glad it went to a PSer :) I’ll be excited to see what you decide to do with her.

I swear I’ve seen the first one before. It reminds me of something I almost bid on on eBay and I’m trying to find the picture. I absolutely adore the setting. Also I’m convinced you have first look (I think You said you did not? ?) because every time I look at your stuff it says unavailable lol. And then later in the day it’s available.

This seems like a good place to ask:

I have been watching something on eBay for a long time. Messaged the seller a question a few months back about some measurements. No reply. Decided yesterday to make an offer, which was low. No reply, they just let it lapse. Seller is high volume 99% positive due to two negative reviews last year. 30 day returns. It’s a simple gold ring nothing wild.

Would you make another offer? I’m hesitant bc of the lack of communication so far and what that could mean if I need a return etc. Like, set an auto reject for low offers if you won’t reply, eh? Instead they waste my time ignoring.

Hi Dreamer. In this case, I would ask myself, do I want this ring. Is it rare enough and special enough to pay full price and sacrifice a little more to get something that doesn’t come around too often.

A vendor that doesn’t respond to niceties is likely not going to respond after a third time. I wouldn’t take it personally. They likely sell enough volume to behave this way towards customers. With thirty day returns I’d just make it a bare minimum transaction and return unapologetically if I have to (if it’s not what I thought it was).

I have never made offers because I’m usually afraid to lose the item, and the price usually seems fair, after mental calculations, for the rarity even if I could have asked for a lower price. Some vendors just aren’t that personable, but to get what I want I tolerate it. If you can take it or leave it, and you feel the worth is actually lower, I’d offer a third time and -then- buy at full price if ignored. But if you don’t want to lose it, I’d buy now at full price.

Update I found it in my old photos. I want to say it was only $1100! And I almost bid on it and the first time it got no bids and the second time I still almost bid on it and the second time I think it sold for 1500. I saved in my favorites because the ring was so beautiful And I regretted not getting it.

Ugh, dammit!

I never did bid on it, unfortunately I ended up with the crud and am just getting back to semi-functional now. The estate that was selling that lot was from a super interesting lady also!

Awww…. Sorry you haven’t been feeling good, there is so much going around right now. I hope you start feeling better soon

Well I “bought the piece”! I didn’t go nuclear as @lavenderdragonfly23 suggested lol I ended up making another offer, slightly higher, and they countered right away. I was temped to counter again but it was only a $20 spread at that point and I just wanted it. I pretty much what @LightBright suggested which is my typical MO.

It’s an antique 18k gold band, 2.6mm wide and 3.4g. It has an inscription with initials and the date of April 10-1920. Size 10.75. I have found it very difficult to locate an 18k band in my size and with the dimensions I want so it will pair well with my rings. My ring size is a more typical “men’s size” and men don’t usually wear dainty rings! Fingers crossed this works out! I paid $350.

Spotted last week - love this!

Just hosting the picture again because I asked Ella to delete the old one because it was showing other pictures from my camera roll. Oops. It may have been $1800 not 1100. I honestly cannot remember! But it was a good price.

Are you planning on wearing it solo or with your 3 and 5 stone beauties?!?

Thanks! I agree about the inscription, it really tipped the balance for me. That and the proportions look about perfect.

I am planning to wear it with my three and five stone rings! Not all together bc that would be pretty wide, but I’m hoping the color works with both. It looks quite brown like so many antique golds can look so I’m hoping it is similar to my five stone. But either way I’m ok. It’s 18k like the others so the richness should be there even if the tone isn’t exactly the same. I think it will pair nicely with my engraved 18k wg Belais band too!

It should arrive in about 100 years lol

The patina on that ring is beautiful! It should look at home with both your 3/5 stones…. But, omg… with your Belais!!! THAT WILL BE … I need pictures!!!!

Now that I know your size and that you ❤️ inscriptions as much as I do, if you ever want a pretty floral engraved thin antique Tiffany platinum band, let me know and I’ll get you the link. It has a Feb 25,1916 inscription. It’s currently a 12.25.
