Somebody's Gotta Buy This Stone!

Welcome to the forum and what a great way to start - with a perfect 10! It would be great if you let us know what you get it, so we can ooh and aahh. Congratulations, that's quite the score!

Please start a thread on your new zircon when it arrives. I think you'll make many of us here drool with envy. What a way to come out of lurkdom!

Thank you minousbijoux for the welcome. I'll take some photos when it arrives and hopefully one will be good enough to post! I do have a couple of others of Gene's stones that I've had set, so when the sun finally makes an appearance, I could have a go at taking those too if anyone is interested.

Thanks Chrono. I'll start a thread if my pics are any good!

Absolutely (to the already set stones). Some pictures are better than no pictures, but of course, we always push for better (clearer and accurate) ones. :halo:

And do share the details of the lovely stone in your avatar. We are a nosy bunch around here.

GREAT color in that Zircon. Congrats to its new owner. Few gemstones I've seen reach such a true yellow. I think these are the stones that Gene says he heats himself over a bunsen burner. I'm not a treatment person, but that's just about the coolest treatment I've ever heard of!

yeah, I loved that - and if I recall, it really was like a recipe, where he was specific about the signs of "doneness" and everything!

That blue sapphire looks amazing!

Can you be more specific - maybe point us in the direction of which fabulous sapphire you're referring to?

For sleepy spinel seekers, here's a 1.47ct 8x6 oval from Mastercut Gems for $280...

Ooh, I saw this one! I was so tempted, but I ended up jumping on the sapphire that was relisted instead. :Up_to_something: I hope someone snatches it up soon!

But if you look at the other shot of the Mahenge, you understand why it hasn't sold; in the photo it looks like it has a hazy film over it which doesn't seem to glow, just seems filmy.

Interestingly that Mahenge looks like the fluor has taken over and is one of the very rare cases where fluor is a negative. You don't see it very often but this is typical of what you see in diamonds when fluor makes the gem look like it has an oily film.

I bet the fluor on this is exceptionally strong - hence the look.

ETA: I don't look at this thread very often but after posting above, went back a few pages for a nosey. Greg - if you knew Minou you'd know she is one of the sweetest, kindest people ever (not to mention being highly knowledgeable about gemstones). So please, no more snarkiness in her direction.

Yes, lovely colour on the Mahenge but greasy looking. I have not checked out the website's other photos though. I once saw a tsavorite in person like this. I kept wanting to clean and rub it because it looks oily all the time but it really wasn't. It was just microscopic inclusions. That said, I don't know why instead of glowing, it looked dirty. Tsavorites do not react to UV so perhaps it is the type of inclusion?

The silky look is very interesting, but I don't really see it as any different from other silky stones - just more so. As Chrono says, I've seen similar sleepiness in other types of stone not known for fluorescence, there must be some other optical property involved.

There's a pretty neat red just added, too...

Looks like somebody DID buy the super silky Mahenge Spinel! :))

And if it's a PSer, I hope he or she fesses up because I want to read their opinion and see more pictures of it.

Second that!

Trust me that's fluoresence. I don't know why but I gravitate towards stones that have it and have also bought some thinking they don't and then they light up like a Christmas tree. I'd bet a hefty sum of money that the stone is not only sleepy/silky BUT the strong fluor is causing the oily film. I've only ever seen this happen twice before and it had exactly the same look. I'm sure in other stones it may just be a poor material which can cause a similar look but this has a blue oily tinge which is completely different.

I actually would buy it just because of its uniqueness.

I can't see the oily film. I would imagine an oily film to be a defect of luster (soo wanted to say lacks luster). Is it just the effect of the fluorescence lighting up the silk from inside?

Do the emoticons in her post imply that ededdeddy bought it?

Very interesting! I wonder how hard it would be to design a UV-lit display case for it, maybe a desk case....

I was going to post this spess by Barry since the color seemed very rich even though it's not that ideal Fanta, but then figured, hey, why not buy it myself, I'm a big garnet fan and have almost every other type, about time I added a spess to the collection. :)

2.39 cts., 7.5mm , Nigerian.

A reddish orange variety! May not be Fanta but I like the reddish ones too because it looks very hot, like smoldering ember.

bump!

no ones seen anything that must be bought this week?

massive window.

Could just be a tilt window but the colour is not appealing to me (too much brownish orange) and is also too silky.
