Well All, I just received two beautiful stones from Dan Stairs. One I had a thread about before. I''m not sure how to refer anyone to that thread. Anyway, one stone is a 2.18 ct pale pink Tourmaline. Dan''s description is: "A very brilliant light pink gem from Afghanistan.  I cut this one with a sort of double barion (lots of facets) pavilion and a brilliant type crown. DIMENSIONS:  7.3 mm, CLARITY: Very Good++ (Eye Clean, Nearly Flawless)"
The second one is: "Very light greenish yellow Heliodor. 2.78 carats, measures 9mm, and is extremely clean...possibly flawless."
Now my questions.........I only wear yellow gold. The Heliodor would look great with yellow gold but I''m not sure about the pink tourmaline. What do youall think? What ideas do you have for settings? Any suggestions or pictures would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sundragon

Sorry I couldn''t add two attachments at the same time. Dumb old me. Here is the Heliodor. Sundragon

Well, here''s one of my favorite settings. Like many here, I have a folder on my computer full of many more! I think white gold with a diamond halo would be very crisp with the pink stone .... I can see a more modern two-tone setting for the heliodor.

This one is great for a round stone:

I agree that I''m not sure how the pink would look with yellow gold. Do you only wear yellow gold because you don''t like the look of white gold or because that is what matches your other jewlery. What I''m getting at is I think the pink stone would look great in a white gold/plat head with a band that is yellow or a band that has touches of yellow gold so it can blend with your collection if that is what the problem is. Was I clear enough?

I like both of the settings suggested here. I was thinking that I would be wearing these rings almost as often as I wear my wedding ring. But because these stones are more fragile than my diamond I''m rethinking my RHR options. The reason I was thinking yellow gold is because my wedding ring is VERY wide and very yellow gold. Do youall wear yellow gold with white gold or platinum? I thought if you''re committed to yellow gold you were stuck with all your jewelry being the same. Am I being old fashioned here? Do youall wear mixtures of different metals?
What do you think of something like this for the pink stone? Sundragon

Sundragon,
That setting is known here affectionately as the Pokey Special. It''s designed and made by Leon Mege of the Art of Platinum. It is rather pricey at around $5k, so I hear. Are you planning on going to him for the custom job, or are you looking for something similiar? I love it too but too pricey for me at the moment. I think it''ll be awesome for a pink stone.

Sundragon, your stones are gorgeous. I really like the look of a white gold split shank pave without a halo for the tourmaline - something similar to the "pokey special." The stone is so beautiful, a halo could possibly detract.

What about something like this for the heliodore, but in yellow gold?

I used to wear nothing but yellow gold, but am now wearing white gold more and am not afraid to mix and match. I look at it as expanding my options, lol.

Have fun with your project. I can''t wait to see the results!

Sorry Dogmom I wasn''t able to go to the web address you suggested. But I will peruse Knox. I didn''t know the setting I posted was so "well known." I guess I have expensive taste, lol. Surely there are settings similar. Guess I''ll start doing some research. Certainly opening up the world of white gold and platinum sure gives me options! OMG choices, choices, choices....Sundragon

Oooohhh...I''ve been drooling over that pink tourmaline on Daniel Stair''s site for a while. Lucky you!

I think it would look gorgeous in a setting similar to Pokey''s split shank, but in rose gold. I love the look of pink stones in rose gold.

Trust me, there are no settings like the Pokey Special on the open market for a reasonable price. I know - I looked!

I wanted something similar for my e-ring and ended up having a split shank custom made. I love the pave on the shank but channel set mine for security issues. That ring is one of my all time favourites!

Could you maybe put the tourmaline in rose or pink gold? It would bring out the pink tones, and from normal viewing distance it would probably look very similar to yellow gold.

I''m sorry the link didn''t work for you. It is the "allure" setting from Knox. I, too, like the idea of rose gold for the tourmaline.

Hey All, Please explain to a dummy what rose gold is? Do you have any examples? This certainly sounds very intriguing.
By the way have any of you ever taken a gold band and had prongs added? Would this work? Frankly I''m amused at the idea of getting an expensive setting to put my very reasonably priced stone in, however the "Pokey" at 5K is a little too pricey for me. However I think, because the pavilions are so beautiful on these two stones I would like for them to show, if you know what I mean. Sundragon

Rose gold has a pinkish hue to it and looks very good with pink stones. Try doing a search of the forums. I''m sure there are lots of threads with more information.

I found a picture of a rose gold band with pink diamonds. This is off Etienne Perret''s website.

Dogmom, I finally found the link you suggested. Yes, I like that too. I wonder if they could make that up in either yellow or rose gold. Hummm................. Sundragon

I also like this from Knox. Although it is extremely simple it really shows off the pavilions. It''s a Tiffany copy I believe. What do you think? Sundragon

Have you gotten your stones in the mail yet?

Oh, I re read and you do have them. How do the colors look in person?

Innerkitten, Yes I got the stones very quickly, two days as a matter of fact. I was really tickled to get them so quickly. The Tourmaline is just a touch pinker than the picture on my monitor. But the Heliodor is almost exactly the same color. I am really really pleased with the stones. And you know buying colored stones is not quite as gut wrenching as buying diamonds. Are you thinking about buying from Dan? He is really a nice person and very easy to do business with. I''d love to see what you are interested in. Sundragon

I actually just purchased this from him but don''t have it yet. If it looks like it does in the photo I''ll be pleased. I may turn it into a pendant.
Looking at your pink stione makes me think pink would also have been nice.

Innerkitten, I love the color. What is it? What size is it? I would love to see your ideas for a pendant. I have just become interested in pendants. My granddaughter just saw a peridot I have and flipped. She wants a pendant. I know nothing about where the best buys are, etc....Let us know when you get your "new baby." Sundragon

I will. And since you asked it''s a spessartite and it''s 7.7 mm
I''m on kind of a budget and may go with an adwar setting. I''ve been looking at the catalogue and they have som e nice stuff. Are you familiar with them?
www.adwar.com

Have yoou ordered from that site before? I have looked at that site and I have to admit that I have trouble finding my way around it. Isn''t it funny how some sites are just not "dummy friendly?" Are you thinking of yellow or white for your metal? Looking at that stone again, I really like it. I''ll bet it''s pravilions will be beautiful too. Sundragon

It''s a very confusing site I agree. I can tell that some of the numbers refer to carat size and the number and size of small sode stones or pave. I''ve never used them and normally would be nervous but a few people here on pricescope used settings from them and had a jeweler put it all together and it looked good.

Oh and if I do like the stone ( which I hope I do ) I'm not sure what color gold to go with. I've been wearing more yellow gold these days but I like the idea of contrasting with white.

This is adwar

Innerkitten, I thought I would wander about on adwar. Did so and found a setting I liked OK. But when I went to order it it looks as though you have to be in the "business." Do they only sell wholesale or what? Sundragon

Hi, I believe you have to direct your jeweler to the adwar setting and they do it for you. Do you have someone you usually use?

Which ones were you looking at?
