First, as for the other comments comments
(1) he is offering a 50% refund for me to keep the nasty things and I am planning on returning them for 100% refund tomorrow!
(2) i would never present one of these horrible things to my girlfriend, although she would accept anything (amazing girl, truely)
I admit that I was dead wrong: the market value is not gauged by asking prices found online somewhere. True market value is what a marginal purchaser would pay for the things. Well I did a pawn shop tour today and found out what the marginal purchaser would pay. The answer? Well, it''s pretty much nothing. I couldn''t pay someone to take the thing! In fact, I learned more about diamonds! I found that the top view of the diamond tells only a fraction of the story. The girdle is thicker on one side than the other. It also has edges on it that don''t look right. One jeweler thought it was a miner''s cut. One clever jeweler figured out how it was repaired and I think he is right. Nonetheless, to the naked eye you may be able to trick the marginal K-mart romantic... but sitting against any decent rock there is no life in it.
And arjunajane- I can easily understand your perspective, but I will try to explain. I''m the type who owns an old volkswagon diesel. The type who makes things unnecessarily difficult. It''s raining out, and my VW is in pieces- I''m taking apart my turbo and rebuilding the engine.. It''s pointless- I can buy 3 good working cars for the price of rebuilding everything in my old VW, and at the same time avoid riding my motorcyle in the rain every day. I suppose I get some sort of sick satisfaction out of the journey- I even pay for it in time and money.
The $2300 ring that I bought for my girlfriend last year - well I got no satisfaction out of it. I gave it to her and it sparkled away- it did the job, and all I had to do was to foot the bill. She loved it, and I love her, so we''re all happy... but... this time around I''m getting a high out of the whole procedure. In fact, I can''t figure out a better way to make the ring itself special, not just the meaning behind it. We already have the most special relationship, and my girlfriend would easily accept a CZ- or just a band- but I want to get her a ring and I''m not going to pay someone to make it ''special'' for me. If this doesn''t make sense, then I don''t blame you... but I never claimed to be sensible.
And let me reiterate how grateful I am of you folks looking out for my well-being by giving me excellent advice and opinions. There comes a time when one must tally up the losses, hedge their risks and start focusing on the finish line- I admit that time had probably come about, oh, the day I recieved the Flea-bay diamond in the mail- perhaps, though, there is yet still hope for me.
Honestly, your lopsided stone is kinda growing on me. It rebels against what a lot of PS''ers consider "normal" or "ideal". Almost to the point where it''s confidently shocking, like it''s saying, "I know I''m disfigured. But I STILL look good!" Haha...
Can you post more pics of it without the idealscope before you return it?

What would people really say? I wouldn't dare tell any girl to her face that her stone is hideous, I'd just say "congratulations!" and leave it at that. She might be attached to the stone because her great grandma was wearing it when she survived the Titanic or something like that. Or the poor girl might not even know that there can be something better out there, and the poor guy who gives her the stone may be just as ignorant and unlike drew, he can't get his money back.

Thanks Drew. It serves as a warning to many thousands of people who search things like "is it safe to by a diamond on ebay"
you will note that on many such searches that Pricescope comes up very high, so what your contriibution does is shows that the buyers in droves will be more aware.
It also makes a mockery of all the vendors who say they cant take a photograph thru an ideal-scope, which is code often for "this is a really nice diamond, why don't you trust me?"
