You can joke about it Missy but it's so unfunny the way they're teaching kids maths these days in Australia.

Let's find thirty ways to do 7 + 6 and draw diagrams!!!!!

I still have nightmares about the way they taught math in grade school ::)

Oooh do you remember how?

It was ok in my day. Fairly straightforward. More rote learning oriented but we got it and we moved on.

These days it's like I said above and the kids spend so much time adding numbers thirty ways with diagrams they don't learn anything else but a really dumbed down syllabus.

I don’t. I’m sorry. It was over 45 years ago o_O but I occasionally still have nightmares about having to do math on a test and not remembering anything. For that matter we were also taught English spelling in the kookiest way. I was in an experimental first grade English class and we were taught to spell phonetically. First and last year they did that. Fortunately I was always an excellent speller despite that sub-par start.

Omg!!! You serious??? English phonetically???? Lol that's crazy!!! Thanks for sharing that! I love tidbits like this.

They tried a new literacy program with my son's kindy too. It runs from Kindy to year 2.

In his words: InitialLit is how they destroy childhood happiness mummy.

Endless chanting of spelling words.

I have nightmares about not graduating from University. I was never there due to work so a few times a year I dream of showing up and finding out I've missed handing in a few papers and am not eligible to graduate.

They are teaching kids right now in CT in kindergarten to spell words out phonetically as they are learning to read. Drove me crazy all year with our son. They expect kids who are not developmentally ready to write complete sentences for example:

"I cic a bal" for "I kick a ball."

Omg what is the point of that??? Doesn't that just establish bad habits and they'll need to adjust to correct spelling?

@mellowyellowgirl, you would think!

Sorry for the threadjack but I just had to comment about that!

I’m so surprised because when they did this in 1971 it was a huge fail and they stopped teaching the kids how to spell phonetically after that. My first grade class was the first and last class in which they taught phonetic spelling.

I wonder why they’re doing it now in your son’s school.

I can't speak for schools in other states but here Common Core is the ruling curriculum. I'm not a teacher but IMO it is an overly complicated way of teaching math and a dumbed down way of teaching reading and writing. You should see how kids need to answer math problems now, it's a whole process just to explain how you got the answer for 2+2.

I was just discussing this with Greg. He knows the stories of how we were taught in grade school. His was a “normal” class/school. But for some reason in the early 70s some of the NYC grade schools did things differently.

I am surprised that almost 50 years later it’s being done at other schools. I wonder why.

But hopefully your son and the other children will excel despite the challenges.
