Hi there, I’m new to this forum and really impressed (and a bit overwhelmed!) by how knowledgable you all are. Hello!

We’ve been married for several years and I loved the ring my husband proposed with but it was definitely not what you’d regard as an engagement ring. Anyway, he wanted to get a ‘proper’ ring, and I refused to allow him to spend any more that £2k all in.

I thought I’d done my research into the 4c’s and after looking a sites in the UK and the US, we found one at Blue Nile. The fact that the 20% VAT was covered was a big plus. Getting a J colour was the only thing that I was nervous about but it did mean we could afford a 0.8 (which he really wanted us to do) so we ordered it and I just hoped it wasn’t a horrible yellow mistake. I had looked at JA and WF too but couldn’t get anything close to the BN price. Diamond and setting in 18kt white gold was £2.2k including VAT.

And then of course in the 4 week wait, I discovered PS and read everything you guys say on here and realised that even though we’d picked a GIA triple X 0.8 VS2 J stone, and thought we’d done the right thing, there was a lot more to it than that!! My diamond is cut quite deep at 63%, with great pavilion angles but quite steep crown angles. HCA gives it 2.3. I was really worried that we’d made an awful mistake.

It arrived last week and I absolutely love it, it sparkles and throws out loads of colours and looks (to us and our untrained eyes!) lovely and white and brilliant. But I also know that I’m really not an expert.

So my question is, with the budget we had, is whether this feels like, as HCA says, a good buy at the price? Or would you have gone for a smaller diamond that was below 2 on HCA? I suppose I’m wondering whether we made a mistake and what I see as a lovely diamond solitaire, is not actually that great. I keep looking at it to see if it’s faulty! I know that probably sounds stupid and I don’t even know what faults I’d be looking for.

Congratulations if you’ve read this far! And thank you if you can be bothered to share your thoughts

If you love it and it sparkles and makes you happy then it’s not a mistake. Many of us don’t have super ideal diamonds and still love them all the same. It’s so easy to get fixated on the numbers - totally get it. The average person outside this forum wouldn’t have a clue, and will just think it is a stunning solitaire.

If you are really worried post the certification specs and let the experts weigh in. Then you can decide wether it may be worth returning.

In the meantime do try to enjoy it though, it’s such a special representation of your journey together. May you wear it in good health.

Thank you so much for the reply, you’re right, and I do love it. I just have this worry that maybe I don’t know what a nice diamond looks like! Everyone on here is so knowledgeable, it’s made me doubt myself!

I’ve attached photos of the GIA certificate. I thought the fluorescence would help the J look whiter and I checked with BN that it wouldn’t make it hazy. So many things to think about! 19EFE41E-68D7-4833-97F5-0DA112D943CF.jpeg

Hey @LLJsmom and @diamondseeker2006 would you perhaps be so kind as to give your opinions, please? I'm no expert so wouldn't want to venture into giving advice when there are so many more knowledgeable people out there =)2

P.S. Always enjoy reading your input on other threads.

If you love it then that’s the main thing! I’m actually very impressed with the size and price and am not sure you could do a whole lot better for the budget. It looks huge on your finger. Enjoy!

I had a stone once that was 36.5/40.6. I really loved the fire it threw! I think this stone is lovely and probably has a lot of fire. Your ring is beautiful. Numbers are just numbers; your eyes tell your truth.
Enjoy your new ring!

Hi, I think with diamonds, the most important thing is that your eyes love it! That’s all that matters!!!!! Even with superideal, or not, everyone have different preferences, whats pretty in my eyes might not be that pretty for others even if its a superideal. So if in first try you found a beautiful diamond in your eyes, you’re very lucky!!! No one can tell you otherwise =)2 and your ring looks beautiful! Finding the fault and over analyzing will only drag you down to a rabbit hole... like I did, not the ending you should be going... enjoy your new ring!!!

I agree that if you love it that's the most important thing. It's by no means a "bad" stone. Not even close to it. Could you have gotten a more "ideal" cut? Maybe. But you did very well for your budget and again you loving it is what matters. I definitely dont think you made a mistake or got a poorly cut stone.

It certainly looks gorgeous! If you got the price you want and you are happy then it’s perfect for you!

One things I've really trusted along my diamond journey is my gut. Up until a few years ago, I really did not understand the impact of the numbers. Anyway, I agree with the posters who say that if you feel like you love it, it is probably the right stone for you. I personally don't have anything against a steeper stone and skinnier arrows. There are definitely situations where that works to make a stone look whiter (to me). And there are times when there is a little bit of leakage that I can see, but does not seem at all to diminish the beauty. In fact again, to me, it seems to make it even more beautiful. So if you honestly love how it looks, and it seems like you do, embrace it, enjoy it, and be super thankful that you lucked out with a great pick. Also, the fluor probably does help it look brighter, a great thing!

Thank you so much everyone, I feel very reassured. I do love this ring, it sparkles all the time and throws out lovely colours.
I really appreciate everyone who’s taken the time to respond, and the fact that no one has said I should consider returning it has made me feel a lot happier.
I guess I just wasn’t sure, because I’m not an expert, what my diamond would be missing. It seems like if it sparkles, and flashes, then it’s doing it’s job and that’s good enough for me! The suggestion that the steep angles help with fire is another new one for me and explains things well.
Thanks again, you’re all very kind for offering your thoughts.

Within the gia gross rounding are several combos that potentualy coul get ags0 light performance but a slight spread penalty kickin it down to ags1 overall.
I am a fan of high crown stones like this when well cut.
I think based on the somewhat limited data you did ok.
Enjoy it and congrates!!

Thanks Karl, still trying to understand the complexity of this new to me world, do you mean that the diamond looks a bit smaller because of the high crown? And that’s the spread penalty? The HCA has it inside AGS PGS 0 on the chart but I understand that’s a only a possible grade (and as you can tell, I don’t really know this stuff).

I’m definitely delighted with it. I’m in a dimly lit room right now and it’s glowing bright white so I think it’s doing what I need it to do! I really should have found this forum before but I’m relieved I got lucky.

AGSL has a spread limit if the stone is the tiniest amount under that its gets a 1. It just covers the measured size not the optical size.

Face up with 2 well cut diamonds the visible size is closer to the measured size difference but can vary a bit depending on lighting.
However when viewed at an angle the crown is higher which can make it look bigger or have more of a 3d effect.
Sometime if you have access to a princess cut around the same size as your diamond this will stand out to a very high degree if you look at both from an angle.
However one round to another the difference is smaller typically but it can still make a visible 3d size appearance difference.
If everything else is great and its in the crown not the pavilion I dont sweat a small spread reduction.

I love it! And if YOU love it, then flash that sparkly baby everywhere!

I think you've got a beautiful diamond for a great price & if @Karl_K is good with it, then you're good to go & should be reassured by that.

Please don't stress too much about the numbers. And congratulations!

It looks like you have yourself a winner! Beautiful, crisp facets, throwing fire, glowing brilliance. Yummy! You did a great job and congrats to hubby for dishing over the $$!!

I understand exactly where you are coming from. In 2019 I bought my OEC knowing nothing about them, and there's no definite numbers to go by like MRBs. I just loved the videos of it and snapped it up. After I purchased it I found a thread here on PS that suggested my diamond to another potential buyer, and she immediately shot it down. I then started questioning my decision and it made me insecure about my purchase. Hubby, being my lifeline to reality most of the time, asked me why I would stop loving her just because it wasn't love at first sight for someone else. I realized that was so true. I had to remind myself how speechless I was when I first got her and how happy she makes me, which is the whole point of sparky carbon on your finger.

Don't psyche yourself out. Your diamond is gorgeous. You and hubby did great.

I think we need a refresh of your beautiful OEC @Mrs_Strizzle !

And i 100 % agree
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Go ask any mother who's baby is the most beautiful
I mean have you seen some mother's babies ?

I absolutely love the small table and high crown... I bet the profile is so yummy! I think it looks really pretty and it does not even look like a J! Looks great on you, and looks more like a carat. Congratulations!

Well. How lovely to wake up this morning to so many kind messages. I had no idea this forum was such a great place.

Thank you all so so much. I am now totally chilled. I came on here yesterday because I am a person who researches everything to get the best quality for the best price. And I mean everything. My husband describes it as my super power. So I think, because I had thought I’d done my due diligence, and then realised there were things I had not even considered, that I’d made a mistake.

I am so happy that I didn’t screw up, and that my diamond, which I love, is a nice diamond to you guys. It’s not super ideal, maybe not ideal, but I’m so happy with what we got. And I am enjoying it massively. And you’ve all helped me to do that so thank you.

Now I just need jewellers to reopen in the UK as my wedding and eternity rings are in desperate need of rhodium plating when compared to this shiny new addition!

Good you are making peace with your beautiful ring
Time to just stick it on your finger and lavish love and attention on it

If you enjoy the research you should dream up a new project
It doesn't need to be exspensive, it doesn't need to be diamonds, what ever your heart desires but something not too outrageous in the back pocket so its attainable in at least the medium term.

And then we can all have fun following along with your new project

Funny you should say that....!

My channel set half eternity ring is raised at the top and doesn’t sit properly against the solitaire so it’s now a RHR with my original engagement ring.

So I think a new eternity might be my next project. But not for a while!

We all have the time
So no hurry
But as soon as you want to start dreaming feel free to start a new thread

Care to share a picture of your original engagement ring & eternity ring? Eye candy during lockdown is always welcome!

Ha ha, I definitely wouldn’t call them
Eye candy! But here’s my original set. They are 18ct white gold and haven’t been plated for about 2-3 years. I actually really like the pale gold natural colour but my wedding band desperately needs to be replated as it now looks dreadful against the new ER.

Top band is the original ER with scatter diamonds so definitely not what you’d call an ER. But my husband chose it and saved to buy it from a very cool jeweller in Soho in London. We were in our early 20’s and had no money and lots of student debt so it was a big deal at the time. I’d never want to be parted from it.

Eternity band was bought when we had our first child. You can see how high it sits so it doesn’t work with the new ring. Plus I think I’ve chipped one of the diamonds so that needs replacing.

Wedding band is typical of early 2000’s, chunky and rounded. I quite like the contrast with the skinny band of the new ring.

So, nothing impressive at all, but they all mean a lot. I loved how @DiamondLizzy put it, they’re all representative of our journey together. 019856CB-1F8E-4444-AD2B-310F07D63719.jpeg
